Postcard 7-9-17 A Poem

Why We Are Here by: Carrie Newcomer She stood looking out the doorway. Poised to step out into what-

ever comes next. Although I knew that I could not go with her…I could keep her company while waiting. Bear witness to the preparing. And maybe rub her tired shoul-ders…which I know is absolutely nothing…And absolutely every-thing. Maybe that is why we are here: To rub shoulders and play cards, to be a place to launch, and a place to land, to murmur on the phone late at night, and say, “This I love” And “This I saw.” As I journey through my second summer without Carol I have discovered a lot about myself…some old…some new. For instance, those who know me know how much I love to play golf. I’m the guy who keeps his clubs in the trunk of his car just in case a game comes up. That said, I noticed last summer, along with this summer, my desire to play golf is no longer there. I still enjoy the game but my passion, for now, seems to have left me. I’m not sure why this is but I have read it’s not that uncommon after someone experience a trauma…such as the death of a spouse. Another example: I use to be a person who would get up in the morning and hit the ground running with a to-do-list in hand. Since Carol’s death I now spend my morning moving more un-hurriedly. Most often listening to relaxing music, reading a little poetry, or reflections and just thinking about life and things…especially now during the summer months as Max and I sit on our deck waiting and watching for the sun to come over the East ridge. I still have my routine but now, more often than not, I get to things when I get around to them. Here’s the interesting part…as I look back on my life, since Carol’s death, I have discovered the things that I now enjoy do-ing were a lot of what Carol enjoyed doing. It started with writ-ing these “Postcard” stories. As I mentioned in my first Postcard story (29 stories ago) Carol was the creative writer. I was like a painter who shared broad strokes with her…she was the one who painted the story and framed its message. That said, I now find

myself really enjoying sitting down and writing about things…especially my journey with grief and loss. Many of you have shared with me how meaningful our “postcards” stories have helped you with healing and understanding your own grief and loss. I started this postcard with a poem. It’s funny, I was never big on poetry but Carol and her mom loved to write poetry. Again, since Carol’s death, I have found poetry to move me deeply, ex-pressing elegantly what at times are the deep feelings of grief and grace that is so hard to express with simple words. Now a day hardly goes by that I don’t find time to read a poem. For me reading poetry is like taking a soothing cool shower on a hot day. Most of my life in ministry was spent helping high school and junior high youth come to understand the divine spark that is within each one of them. I was never very good at connecting with grade school youth but Carol thrived on their goodness and pureness. She was like a magnet around little children. Again, in these past months I love being with my first graders at Hillcrest School. I sometimes imagine that I am pushing Carol in her wheelchair into the school with me…I find myself saying things to them that she was so good at expressing with children. Noth-ing in life can beat 27 “Hi Grandpa Mac!!” And 27 hugs twice a week. Carol had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. She was a fix-ture in the music ministry here at Holy Spirit for many years. I on the other hand enjoyed singing but I was never passionate about it. Last Fall when I joined the Tech Coral Choir I discov-ered the harmony of music…singing with the group filled a space in my heart that was healing and reassuring. The last thing I have discovered about myself is really amaz-ing. All my life I hated “yard work” I use to tell Carol “If it was up to me the whole yard would be concreate.” I usually mumbled those words to myself as Carol would tell me where she wanted her flowers planted and remind me the lawn needed cutting or watering. It’s hard to believe but this summer I really enjoy working on our yard…planting and taking care of all our flowers and lawn…I now know the difference between an Annual and a Perennial flower… And I moving into the 21st century! Next week I am having an automatic sprinkler system installed. Carol would be proud of our yard. Psychiatrist Patrick O’Malley writes in his new book titled: “Getting Grief Right” “I was steadily drawn to another way of understanding and even embracing the experience of mourning…through the narrative of

grief. It might sound simplistic, but I discovered that our stories were indeed the pathway to living with loss.” Carol’s story of life and grace is deeply imbedded in my heart, soul and mind. I think and speak to her every day. And I love to tell her story (our story) through these “Postcard” reflections and the people I meet. For me it’s easy to see that she now is im-planted in my heart and all that I see, do, and hear.

“This I love” And “This I saw.”

So…anyone have a good quiche recipe? Deacon Dan and a “Postcard” from Carol “All sorrows can be borne if you put them in a story or tell a story about them.” ( Isak Dinesen)
