THE MATCH-UP Kansas City is seeking its first-ever preseason victory vs. the Seahawks. After dropping preseason contests at Seattle in 2002 and 2003, the Chiefs will host its former AFC West rival for the first time in preseason play at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday. KC is still seeking its first preseason win after suffering a 24-17 loss vs. Arizona (8/20). The Seahawks are 1-0 after a 34-15 win at New Orleans (8/12). Seattle plays on Monday vs. Dallas (8/22). The Chiefs are seeking to regain their 2003 form when the club won the AFC West with a 13-3 record. Seattle won the NFC West with a 9-7 record in 2004 and is looking to claim consecutive division crowns for the first time in franchise history.

Saturday’s contest features two of the NFL’s most productive running backs in recent years – Kansas City’s Priest Holmes and Seattle’s Shaun Alexander. Over the past four seasons, no NFL back has averaged more yards from scrimmage per game than Holmes (141.6). In terms total rushing yards over that four-year span, only San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson (5,899) and Green Bay’s Ahman Green (5,673) have racked up more yards on the ground than Alexander (5,624), while Holmes ranks fifth in that department (5,482). However, no player in NFL history can match Holmes’ scoring spree over the past three seasons. Dating back to the start of the 2002 campaign, Holmes has registered 62 rushing TDs and 66 total TDs, totals that are both records over any three-year span in NFL history.

This contest will provide one more opportunity for each squad to evaluate young players before the league’s first cutdown date on Tuesday, August 30th when teams must trim their rosters to 65 players. However, the Chiefs hold 10 roster exemptions for NFL Europe League players, meaning that Kansas City’s roster will only be reduced to 75 players on August 26th. Those 10 NFLEL players are exempt from being cut until the NFL’s final roster reduction to 53 players on Saturday, September 3rd. KC concludes its 2005 preseason slate at St. Louis (9/2), while Seattle hosts Minnesota the same evening.

THE SERIES Seattle holds a 2-0 advantage in the brief preseason series

between the Chiefs and Seahawks that began in 2002. Both of those contests came at Seattle with Seattle claiming a 41-32 victory (8/23/03) and a 17-14 win (8/24/02). However, the Chiefs do have one preseason victory to their credit in Seattle. The Chiefs franchise began play in Kansas City during the ’63 season after a three-year run as the Dallas Texans. KC made a visit to Seattle in the ’63 preseason when the club claimed a 35-21 win at Husky Stadium (8/17/63).

Kansas City owns a 30-18 (.625) record in regular season play

against Seattle. Last year the two teams met for the first time in the preseason with Seattle claiming a 17-14 win at Seahawks Stadium (8/24/02) in just the second game ever played at that facility.

KC was 10-11 (.476) all-time against Seattle at the Kingdome, but owns a 20-8 (.714) all-time regular season record in outdoor contests vs. the Seahawks (19-6 at Arrowhead, 1-1 at Husky Stadium and 0-1 at Seahawks Stadium). The Seahawks produced a 39-32 win in the most recent regular season contest between the two clubs (11/24/02).

KC holds a 17-8 (.680) edge in regular season competition against the Seahawks dating back to ’90 and are 10-5 (.667) since the ’95 season. Although Seattle has won four of the last five regular season meetings between the two clubs played in the Northwest, the Chiefs have claimed wins in three of the last four games at Arrowhead. The next regular season meeting between the two squads is scheduled for the 2006 season at Arrowhead.

WHAT VERMEIL IS SAYING . . . On the team’s chances this year: “I believe this should be the best football team we’ve had since I’ve been here, especially on defense. Whether it will be or not will be dependent upon how we as coaches coach and how players respond to training camp.”

On the offense: “I think if this offensive team was in one of the big markets it would be different. We set numerous team records. If you’re in New York or Chicago that might be a big thing, but we’re not really too concerned who gets the credit. We’ve just got to get so we’re a better football team and if the offense has to get better for us to be a better football team than they have to get better. On the defense: “I don’t think I’ve ever had as much talent on defense as we have right now. We’re so much further ahead defensively than we were last year at the same time. Even on the mental side of it as the physical side. It’s not a new defense, it’s the better understanding of it. It’s the growth of the personnel that was here; it’s the addition of the personnel that we brought in including the draft choice. It’s impressive. We will be better. I don’t know how much better, but we will be better.”

On QB Trent Green’s longevity and productivity: “That’s a real testament to the offensive line. Obviously if you go through four knee operations and then come onto an NFL team and the offensive line is not really sound and really good, it’s probably going to give you fits. Our offensive line happens to be a really good offensive line. That’s helped. The other thing is the philosophy within the overall passing game. It’s a very quick, rhythmic passing game and a guy with experience knows where he’s going with the ball quicker. He doesn’t hang on to it very much. So, I think it all fits together.”

On the Chiefs LBs: “I’ve never been on the field with this many talented LBs, anywhere. How long it’s going to take them to play football I don’t know, but they look good. Derrick Johnson has done awfully well as a rookie in picking things up. He’s really done a good job. He’s going to be very competitive to start early.”

Mike Holmgren was named the sixth head coach in

Seahawks history on January 8, 1999. In his first season with the club, he guided Seattle to its first AFC West title since ’88. Holmgren has led the Seahawks to back-to-back postseason appearances, including an NFC West title in 2004. He joined Seattle after six years (’92-98) as head coach of the Packers, leading GB to six playoff berths and two Super Bowl appearances, including a 35-21 win over New England in SB XXXI following the ’96 season. Born in San Francisco, California on June 14, 1948, Holmgren began his NFL coaching career with the 49ers as QBs coach (‘86-88) before taking over as offensive coordinator (‘89-91), earning two SB rings in the process. He entered the pro ranks after college stints at San Francisco State (’81) and BYU (‘82-85) and a 10-year high school coaching tenure. BYU won the ’84 National Championship with Holmgren coaching QBs.

A quarterback at USC from ‘66-69, Holmgren was drafted in the eighth round of the ’70 NFL Draft by St. Louis and also spent time in training camp with the Jets that year, but never made an active NFL roster.

Dick Vermeil was named the ninth head coach in Chiefs

history on January 12, 2001 following head coaching stints with Philadelphia (’76-82) and St. Louis (‘97-99). He is one of just four coaches in NFL history to lead two different teams to the Super Bowl and has twice been named NFL Coach of the Year.

The Calistoga, California native began his NFL coaching career with the L.A. Rams (’69, ‘71-73) serving as the team’s special teams, RBs, and QBs coach and offensive coordinator. During his tenure as head coach in Philadelphia (’76-82), he compiled a 54-47 record. In ’78, Vermeil guided the Eagles to their first playoff appearance in 12 years. He then led the ’80 Eagles to a 12-4 record to earn a trip to Super Bowl XV.

Vermeil returned to the sidelines as the head coach of St. Louis for three seasons (’97-99), guiding the Rams to a 13-3 record in ’99, concluding the year with a win in Super Bowl XXXIV. A standout quarterback at San Jose State, Vermeil served as an assistant at Stanford (’65-68) and UCLA (’70) before taking over the head coaching duties for the Bruins from ’74-75. In ’75, he led UCLA to a 23-10 victory over #1 ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

THE 2005 CHIEFS The Chiefs are seeking to rebound from a 7-9 record in 2004. Al

Saunders returns for his fifth season as Kansas City’s assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, while Gunther Cunningham is his second stint as KC’s defensive coordinator after rejoining the club in 2004.

Kansas City continued its offensive productivity a year ago, setting an NFL record with 398 first downs. Over the past two seasons, the Chiefs have registered 63 rushing TDs, tying the ’61-62 Packers for the best two-year total in NFL history. The Chiefs led the NFL in total offense for the first time in 2004, averaging 418.4 yards per game. KC also ranked in the NFL’s top five in each of the four major offensive categories for the first time in team history in 2004: scoring offense (2nd – 30.2 ppg), total offense (1st – 418.4 ypg), pass offense (4th – 275.4 ypg) and rush offense (5th – 143.1 ypg).

In total, the Chiefs established or tied 19 single-season team records in 2004, including marks for completions (370), passing yards (4,406), passing first downs (228) and third-down conversions (47.2%). The club’s 30.2 ppg scoring average ranked second in the league. In addition, the Chiefs scored 30+ points in five consecutive games, a first in team history. KC’s offense also averaged 54.1 advances per game (rushes and completions), the best mark in the league in 2004.

The Chiefs have added several new faces to their defensive unit in 2005, headlined by a trio of former Pro Bowl performers. CB Patrick Surtain was acquired in an off-season trade with Miami and earned two Pro Bowl berths (2002-03) with that club. He is joined in the KC secondary by former Dolphins S Sammy Knight, who was a Pro Bowler for New Orleans in 2001. LB Kendrell Bell, who earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowl bid with the Steelers in 2001, joined the club as a UFA from Pittsburgh.

KC also bolstered its roster with the addition of DE Carlos Hall in an off-season trade with Tennessee. LB Derrick Johnson (D1-05) won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top collegiate linebacker and is also expected to make an immediate contribution. Notable returnees on the KC defense include DE Eric Hicks (40.5 career sacks), S Greg Wesley (504 career tackles), CB Eric Warfield (19 career INTs), DT John Browning (25.5 career sacks) and DE Jared Allen (9.0 sacks in 2004).

Kansas City’s specialty units are headed by Frank Gansz, Jr. K Lawrence Tynes returns, while P Dustin Colquitt (D3-05) and P Nick Murphy are competing for the punting job. Larry Johnson (D1-03) will serve as Holmes’ primary backup once again in 2005 after registering 581 yards, three 100-yard games and nine TDs in 2004. Two-time Pro Bowl FB Tony Richardson is one of the league’s best at his craft. He will pair with Robert Holcombe to give KC one of the league’s top fullback duos. The rest of the competition at WR features veteran performers such as two-time Pro Bowl return man extraordinaire Dante Hall, as well as Marc Boerigter and Chris Horn who are both returning from knee surgeries, as well as Richard Smith, who saw duty in four games in 2004. Former Eagles first-round pick Freddie Mitchell suffered a right knee injury on July 30th, but should also figure into the mix. Others competing at WR include: Craphonso Thorpe (D4-05), Jeris McIntryre (D6-04), ex-Titan Darrell Hill, NFLEL veteran John Booth and rookie FA Nathaniel Curry, who did not play at MIN (8/12) and vs. ARZ (8/20) with a rt. hamstring injury. TIGHT ENDS Six-time Pro Bowler Tony Gonzalez (D1-97) is arguably the best player

at his position in the NFL and is KC’s all-time leading receiver with 570 catches and needs just 402 yards to pass WR Otis Taylor (7,306) for the most receiving yards in franchise annals. Gonzalez led all NFL pass catchers with 102 receptions in 2004, the highest total in league history by a tight end. Jason Dunn possesses the size of an offensive tackle and is a key element of the club’s rushing attack. Kris Wilson (D2b-04) is a versatile performer who can line up in a variety of formations. He returns to action after missing the majority of the 2004 campaign with a broken left fibula. Other tight ends in camp include rookie FAs Edwin Thompson and Mike Kallfelz. G Will Shields (D3-93) has been to 10 Pro Bowls and enters his 13th NFL campaign owning a streak of 191 consecutive starts at his right guard post. T Willie Roaf also boasts 10 career Pro Bowl appearances, including three straight as a member of the Chiefs and is regarded as one of the most dominant left tackles in recent NFL history. G Brian Waters earned his initial Pro Bowl berth as a left guard in 2004 and has opened 55 straight games at that position. C Casey Wiegmann is one of the league’s most underrated performers. The right tackle position is the only spot yet to be solidified for the club in 2005. T Jordan Black (D5-03) started the final four games at that post in 2004 before suffering a left knee injury in the regular season finale. G/T John Welbourn started the first 10 contests of 2004 at right tackle and has also worked at guard during training camp. The Chiefs return all of their top performers on the defensive front from 2004 and have a strong rotation of players at both defensive end and defensive tackle. DE Eric Hicks ranks fifth in franchise history with 40.5 career sacks. DE Jared Allen (D4-04) was the club’s Mack Lee Hill Award winner a year ago after leading all NFL rookies with a team-high 9.0 sacks. DE Jimmy Wilkerson (D6-03) won the club’s Mack Lee Hill Award in 2003 and gives the club another talented end. DE Carlos Hall was acquired in an off-season trade with Tennessee after starting 14 contests for the Titans in 2004. DT John Browning (D3-96) is the senior member of the defensive line and owns 25.5 career sacks. DT Lional Dalton joined the club as a free agent in 2004 and made an immediate contribution, starting 13 contests at right DT and registering a career-high 4.0 sacks. DT Ryan Sims (D1-02) started 13 contests at left DT a year ago and had a career-high 16 QB pressures. DT Junior Siavii (D2a-04) is a massive performer who saw duty in 12 games as a rookie. The Chiefs made several significant off-season acquisitions to upgrade their linebacking corps, headlined by Kendrell Bell who signed as a UFA from PIT. The 2001 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year also earned a Pro Bowl berth in his initial NFL campaign. Bell is expected to man the starting job at the ROLB post. Shawn Barber is attempting to bounce back from a torn left ACL that cost him the final eight games of the 2004 campaign. Barber produced 141 tackles and 5.0 sacks in his debut campaign with Kansas City in 2003. Five-year veteran Quinton Caver and rookie FA Kris Griffin also work at ROLB. Caver did not play vs. ARZ (8/20) with a left knee injury. Kawika Mitchell (D2-03) returns for his third season and is expected to once again be the starter at MLB. Rich Scanlon and Boomer Grigsby (D5a-05) are expected to compete for the top backup spot at MLB. Mike Maslowski is still rehabbing an off-season knee surgery and has not returned to practice. Derrick Johnson (D1-05) won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker and the Bronco Nagurski Trophy as the country’s top collegiate defensive player as a senior at the University of Texas. Johnson will compete for the starting spot at LOLB along with fourth-year pro Scott Fujita (D5-02) who has opened every game at that spot the past two seasons. Also working at LOLB is second-year pro Keyaron Fox (D3-04) and Gary Stills (D3a-99), who earned a Pro Bowl berth as a special teams phenom following the 2003 campaign. Stills moved back to LOLB in 2005 from DE. LB KENDRELL BELL • Did not play at MIN (8/12) and vs. ARZ (8/20). • In 47 games (44 starts) for PIT (2001-04), recorded 261 tackles (212

25 more to surpass LB Greg Manusky (147) for first. DEFENSIVE BACKS

The Chiefs made two marquee acquisitions to their secondary, adding a pair of Pro Bowlers and former Dolphins teammates in CB Patrick Surtain

and S Sammy Knight. Surtain earned a pair of Pro Bowl berths with Miami (2002-03) and came to Kansas City in an off-season trade. Knight, who is expected to start at the SS post for Kansas City, earned a Pro Bowl berth as a member of the Saints in 2001. CB Eric Warfield (D7a-98) enters his fifth campaign as a starter for the Chiefs. Although eligible to compete in the preseason, Warfield will be sidelined for the first four games of the 2005 regular season, meaning that CB Dexter McCleon has taken the bulk of the snaps with the first unit at training camp. Second-year CB Benny Sapp has seen extensive action in the nickel during camp. Recently-acquired veterans CB Ashley Ambrose (192 career games) and CB Dwayne Washington (175 career games) give the Chiefs experienced depth to go with rookie CBs Alphonso Hodge (D5b-03) and Justin Perkins. S Greg Wesley (D3-00) is making the move to FS in 2005 after starting 72 games at SS over the past five seasons. S Jerome Woods (D1-96), who earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2003, is rebounding from a knee injury that cost him the final six games of 2004 and is expected to work behind Wesley. S Shaunard Harts provides depth at safety along with William Bartee (D2-00), who makes the move to that position after working at CB the past five seasons. Other returnees at safety include Willie Pile (D7b-03) and All-NFLEL performer Scott Connot. CB PATRICK SURTAIN • Played in 108 games (82 starts) for MIA (’98-04), producing 398 tackles

(314 solo), 6.5 sacks (-47.0 yards), 29 INTs (298 yards) with two TDs, 96 PDs, four FRs and three FFs.

Rookie RB Larry Johnson enjoyed a stellar performance for the Chiefs, but a pair of fourth-quarter Seattle TDs gave the Seahawks a 42-31 preseason victory in a contest that featured 796 yards of total offense from both squads. After Seattle took an early 3-0 lead, QB Trent Green guided the Chiefs on an 80-yard drive that was capped by a 14-yard TD pass to TE Tony Gonzalez, setting the stage for a wild second- quarter scoring spree. Following a Chiefs INT, Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck found FB Heath Evans for a four-yard TD, but the Chiefs answered with an 11-yard TD from QB Todd Collins to WR Marc Boerigter. Seattle cut the Chiefs lead to 14-13 with a 50-yard FG, but Kansas City upped its lead to 21-13 at halftime after instant replay ruled that TE Jason Dunn had caught a seven-yard TD pass from QB Todd Collins. The scoring continued in the third quarter as Hasselbeck connected on a three-yard TD pass to WR Darrell Jackson. A successful two-point attempt briefly knotted the count at 21-21 before Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff for an 85-yard TD for the Chiefs. Johnson also piled up 12 carries for 77 yards on the evening. Seattle tied the score at 28-28 thanks to a 19-yard TD from QB Trent Dilfer to WR Koren Robinson. The Chiefs were forced to punt on their next possession, but LB Quinton Caver forced WR Bobby Engram to fumble on the return, setting up a 40-yard FG by K Jose Cortez to give Kansas City a 31-28 advantage entering the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter belonged to Seahawks rookie RB Kerry Carter, who led Seattle in rushing with 11 carries for 53 yards. Carter burst off right guard for the first of his two TDs in the final frame, getting a 17-yard score at the 12:05 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Seahawks a 35-31 lead. Cortez had a 44-yard FG try sail wide left on the Chiefs next possession, setting up an 11-play, 66-yard drive by Seattle that was capped by a one-yard TD run by Carter. Chiefs rookie QB Scott Covington was intercepted on Kansas Cityʼs final drive, allowing the Seahawks to run out the clock on a 42-31 victory.

Despite a record day from RB Priest Holmes and an early 10-point lead, the Chiefs couldn’t slow down QB Matt Hasselbeck and the Seattle offense. Hasselbeck put up a career-high 362 passing yards en route to a 39-32 win at Seahawks Stadium. After the Chiefs jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the contest thanks to two Holmes TDs, Seattle rattled off 21 straight points to take a 28-21 lead and never looked back. The final minute of the first half proved to be the pivotal sequence of the game. Leading 17-14, the Chiefs were faced with first-and-goal at the one-yard line. But instead of potentially taking a 10-point lead into intermission, the Chiefs found themselves down 21-17 at the half. LB Orlando Huff intercepted a pass intended for TE Jason Dunn in the end zone. The Seahawks then proceeded to march 80 yards, getting a six-yard TD on a TE Jerramy Stevens catch with 0:06 left in the second quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish. In a game that featured a team-record 1,086 combined yards by both squads, Holmes enjoyed one of the finest individual performances in Chiefs history in the losing cause. His 307 yards of total offense (197 rushing, 110 receiving) were the fourth-highest mark in NFL history and just two yards off WR Stephone Paige’s team record, while his rushing tally was three yards off RB Barry Word’s team record of 200. Early in the fourth quarter Holmes capped a 92-yard drive with a four-yard TD run and QB Trent Green (343 yards and two TDs) added a two-point conversion. That score pulled the Chiefs to within 28-25 in the third quarter, but it would be as close as they would get. A 37-yard Seattle FG and a 46-yard TD run by RB Shaun Alexander would make the count 39-25 before a 15-yard TD catch by KC WR Marc Boerigter made the final score 39-32.

GAME NOTES• KC’s 552 total yards at Seattle were the third-highest total in team history and the most since getting 566 yards vs. Detroit (10/14/90).
