Kilimanjaro overview: 5895 metres tall stands the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the tallest in Africa; Mount Kilimanjaro! The two main peaks include Kibo, which is the higher one out of the two and set as the main goal for most trekkers from around the world; and secondly, Mawenzi with its jagged points and pinnacles. Although Kilimanjaro lies three degrees south of the equator, one can encounter varieties of vegetation ranging from the forest, heather and moorland, alpine desert to the snow. The beauty of this mountain is that anyone can climb it without requiring any technical equipment or mountaineering expertise. The mountain offers six main ascent routes, including Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai and Umbwe; and two key descent routes: Mweka and Marangu.

The crew: we believe in providing the best mountain support team and are fortunate to have some of the most experienced and knowledgeable staff, including most guides that have been with us for more than 12 years; two of which have been with us for 25 years and have climbed Kilimanjaro more than an unimaginable number of 1000 times! In over 30 years of operation, our clients have never got to the point of having severe health incidents on Kilimanjaro, which reveals the fact that the safety of our clients is paramount!

Equipment: we utilise some of the highest quality items and brands including our four-season Hilleberg and Vaude tents, Snugpak four-season sleeping bags, Black Diamond walking poles and more. This aids in the probability of reaching Uhuru peak we feel, as the last thing you would want is poor equipment to let you down!

Best time to climb: December to March (mid-month) and June (mid-month) to October (end)

Age restriction: minimum age = 12 years (for younger indivi-duals please contact us)

Marangu route, commonly known as the “Coca Cola” route due to its popularity is to date one of the most selected and utilised route choices. A misconception of Marangu route being the easiest option has been widely assumed; however do not underestimate any route on the mountain! This idea may have developed for several reasons such there being a well defined path where obstacles have been modified to be more ‘climber-friendly’ in comparison to other routes with no scrambling

• Accommodation: this is the only route with overnights in wooden hut accommodation (built in the 1980’s). Remember if you wish to book this route, availability of space in huts has to be checked and pre-booked with a non-refundable deposit. We highly recommend trekkers to have 4 season sleeping bags during overnights.

• Ascent and descent: same

• Length: this route can be trekked within a minimum of 5 days in total, making it one of the shortest routes available, however an additional day for acclimatisation is highly recommended.

I M P O R T A N T I N F O R M A T I O N :

• Price: lowest priced route in comparison to the others.

• Success rate: for the summit is one of the lowest which could be for a number of reasons, including lack of acclimatisation due to the fast ascent or the route’s reputation of being easy may appeal to those with less experience and training.

• Acclimatisation: poor acclimatisation, known to be one of the routes with the least altitude acclimatisation

• Level: beginners – intermediate

• People traffic: very high

required. Or could this false impression be due to the ease for tour operators to organise the trip without requiring equipment such as mountain sleeping and eating tents, is anyone’s guess. Nevertheless, from the minimum 5 days required to complete this trek, we would highly recommend all to add an additional day for acclimatisation making it a 6 day trek; bearing in mind that even though this may increase the climber’s chances of reaching the summit, the majority of them do not.

You would normally hear many mountain guides suggesting that this is one of the best routes to take due to the chances of reaching the summit and in recent years it has become one of the most popular trails for many trekkers. The route is known to be physically more demanding in comparison with the ‘Coca cola’ route, hence its nickname the ‘Whiskey’ route. The climb typically lasts for a minimum of 6 days (one day longer than the minimum for Marangu route) and the success rate for summiting

• Accommodation: overnights at campsites in Hilleberg | Vaude, four-season, 2 person tents.

• Ascent and descent: Ascent via Machame route, descent via Mweka route

• Length: this route can be trekked within a minimum of 6 days in total, however an additional day for acclimatisation

is highly recommended.

I M P O R T A N T I N F O R M A T I O N :

• Price: mid-range (higher priced compared to Marangu due to a larger number of porters required to carry additional equipment e.g. tents, and longer trek)

• Success rate: high

• Acclimatisation: very good

• Level: intermediate

• People traffic: very high

appears significantly higher in terms of percentage. This could be due to the great acclimatisation it provides or maybe it is an indication that a larger number of experienced and well-trained individuals are attracted to this route. The chances of reaching Uhuru peak increase with a recommended extra day for acclimatisation, which additionally reduces the number of hours of trekking the day before allowing the body time to relax, recuperate and prepare for the final summit attempt.

Shira also identified as the Londrossi route along with the Lemosho route, both cross the collapsed volcanic crater known as the Shira Plateau. These two isolated routes provide trekkers a solitary experience on the initial days; with literally no other individuals to be seen around; a huge advantage for those who want to avoid the distraction of other people. Registration for the permits are at Londrossi Gate (2250 m) for both trails, however each one divides thereafter. The Lemosho route, which

is growing in its appeal to a larger number of individuals, is a fairly recent version of the traditional Shira route. The actual trekking on Shira route begins at the plateau in the moorland zone, at a higher altitude, which is one of the greatest disadvantages of taking this route, due to the lack of acclimatisation and the idea of missing out on the walk through the forest vegetation. On the other hand, Lemosho starts at a lower elevation which helps tremendously with acclimatisation.

This route starts from the Northern side of the mountain near the Kenyan border Tarakea, and offers great opportunities of seeing wildlife compared to the other routes; including encounters of monkeys, buffaloes and even elephants! K I L I M A N J A R O route alternatives:

• Overnight in Crater Camp: Can be added as an additional day on the mountain, recommended only for longer itineraries and those who are well acclimatised to higher altitudes. Your tent will be set up at an altitude of approx. 5600 metres, providing you a chance to explore the ash pit and the remaining glaciers up close on Kilimanjaro.

• Northern Circuit route: The newest and longest route on Kilimanjaro offered on special request, commencing from Londrossi Gate. Excellent for acclimatisation, though high in terms of price due to the number of days.

• Western Breach: the most dangerous and challenging route via Arrow Glacier Camp offered on special request, which previously caused deaths due to rock slide.

K I L I M A N J A R O short trips:

If one wishes to step on the infamous Kilimanjaro without attempting the summit, this is possible:

• Marangu-Mandara day / overnight trip: experience the forest zone of Kilimanjaro, and a possible glimpse of the heather and moorland. An optional trek to Maundi Crater is additionally possible.

• Shira Plateau two night, three day trip: a short trip from the western side of the mountain to encounter the Shira Plateau, Shira Cathedral and Shira Needle.

The second highest mountain in Tanzania, standing 4566 metres high, is an ideal option for training and acclimati- sation for a successive Kilimanjaro climb. Situated within Arusha National Park, one is likely to encounter various wild ani-mals during the initial part of the trek. Many consider this trek physically more challenging compared to the Marangu or Rongai trail. The full climb can be attempted within 3 days; however we would highly recommend the 4-day trekking option as below:
