Lesson Objectives Students will be able to:

1. Explain the steps to evaluate progress made in a job search. 2. Explain the steps to modify a career plan if needed. 3. Evaluate areas of growth related to a positive attitude in a job search.

Materials Needed

• The Job Search Lesson 1, Activity 1 ‘A Checklist to Start Your Search’ worksheet completed in lesson one of this module

• A copy of the My Areas for Growth (Activity 1) Worksheet for each student Advance Preparation

• Ask students to have the completed Checklist to Start Your Search worksheet available (or if you were storing it, have them available for the students)

Activator (Typically 5-10 minutes) ‘An Imaginary Day’ Activity Ask students to sit quietly, close their eyes, and think about their dream job. Ask them to imagine each step of their day as you describe it. Tell them to imagine: waking up in the morning. What time is it? Do they wake up to an alarm or are they able to wake up when they choose to? Now imagine dressing for your job. Do you wear a suit? Jeans and a t-shirt? A uniform? How are you getting to work? Are you driving yourself or taking a subway? Are you indoors or outdoors for the majority of the day? Do you work at a desk or are you able to move around? Do you work with a team? Alone? With a partner? (Continue to ask detailed questions about their day – be as creative as you wish. You may choose to include questions about the type of house where they live, their family life, etc. to expand the focus to life planning.) (Pause for a moment to allow them to think.) Now think about all the steps it took in your job search to get to the point you are at today -- working at your dream job! Do you remember creating your resume? Practicing interviewing questions? Researching career information on the internet? Did you have any roadblocks or challenges along the way? If so, how did you approach those

challenges? With a positive attitude? How about the successes along the way? Are you happy? Proud of yourself? (Pause again for a moment to allow time for reflection.) Allow students several moments of silent reflection, then have the students open their eyes. Ask them how they felt when they experienced the positive parts of the reflection time. How about facing challenges and/or obstacles? Can they stay positive when thinking about the challenges? Tell the students that they will, no doubt, have challenges in life. The more they can face the challenges head on and keep an overall positive attitude, the more likely they will be able to grow from all of their experiences! 6 Counselor • When students have finished reviewing the checklist, discuss the following:

o Which of the skills learned in the job search lessons do you feel will be most valuable to you in the future?

(chart from RI School Counselor Association’s Toolkits, found at www.rischoolcounselor.org)

Summarizer/Informal Assessment (Typically 5-10 minutes) Ask the students to discuss how they felt after reviewing their progress in the job search process. Did they think they would be further along? Were they comfortable with the progress they have made? Do they feel more confident? Of the activities that are still incomplete, what will their next steps be? Follow-Up Opportunities for additional learning could include all of the previous lessons provided related to Job Search project lessons. Another additional activity could be that the students write in journals as they progress through the Job Search lessons. As part of follow up, the students could go back to when they started using the journal and compare and contrast where they are now versus where they were at before (emotionally, physically, etc). The important thing to have them remember is progress and growth!
