Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2014/2015:
Lure of Las Vegas promises sensational Longines season
By Louise Parkes
The lure of the bright lights of Las Vegas adds an extra edge to the Longines FEI
World Cup™ Jumping 2014/2015 season.
This series is always guaranteed to provide more than its fair share of excitement,
and the trophy is one of the most coveted in the sport. Since Austria’s Hugo Simon
first held it aloft back in 1979, riders have battled fiercely for a place at the annual
Final at which the king, or queen, of indoor Jumping is crowned.
And as it returns to
the American city
where it has been
staged on five
previous occasions,
there is a shiver of
anticipation because
Las Vegas has
produced some of the
most electrifying
finishes in the 36-
year history of the
event.

The qualifying rounds of the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping series are not easily
won, and the Western European League presents 12 tough qualifying opportunities at
some of the most popular and glamorous venues on the international circuit.
Record books
The record books show that Germany has sent out the greatest number of winners,
10 in total following last season’s superb victory for Daniel Deusser riding Cornet
d’Amour. However Americans dominated during the early years, winning seven of the
first nine titles, and, after a long absence, they made a come-back with victories from
Rich Fellers in 2012 and Beezie Madden in 2013. When the Final returns to their
doorstep in April 2015 they will be hoping to redress the imbalance and catch up with
their main rivals.
Experts
The watchmaking experts from Longines have a long and distinguished association
with equestrian sport dating back to 1878 when a timepiece with a horse and rider
engraved on the watch face was first made. Longines has dramatically extended its

equestrian sports sponsorship in recent years, but the FEI World Cup™ series holds a
special place in the heart of the Swiss company which treasures the qualities of
tradition, precision and elegance.
Just as it does in the world of watchmaking, experience also counts for a very great
deal and that is one of the things that is tested each season on the indoor Jumping
tracks around the world.
The ability to jump a big course at speed without touching a pole and then to return
to race against the clock is not quickly learned by either horse or rider, but the
greatest protagonists of the sport do it with consummate professionalism.
Las Vegas Final
And there is one man who everyone will be watching if he makes it to the Las Vegas
Final. Canada’s Ian Millar is a 10-time Olympian who is still cutting it with the very
best of them.

You have to go all the way back to 1988 to recall his very first FEI World Cup™
Jumping victory in Gothenburg, Sweden with the great Big Ben who returned to do it
again the following year.
Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa is the only rider to have recorded three wins in a row, while
Austria’s Hugo Simon and Germany’s Marcus Ehning and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum
are also three-time champions. But if Millar maintains form he could, at the age of 68,
become the fifth triple champion in the history of a series that has consistently set the
best apart from the rest. www.worldcuplasvegas.com

The defending series champion
is Germany’s Daniel Deusser,
who came out on top with
Cornet d'Amour (below) at the
last series Final in Lyon, France.

Gladstone, he finished ahead of
America's Katie Monaghan and
The Jones Boy in second place,
and America's Norman dell Joio

Macken with Carroll's of
Dundalk shared third place.

National pride
US riders claimed the trophy seven times for the first nine years of the series, but there
was a 25-year gap before Rich Fellers re-claimed it in 2012 with the brilliant stallion
Flexible. Beezie Madden then made it a back-to-back win for the US at the 2013 Final
with Simon. Three riders have claimed the FEI World Cup™ Jumping title on three
occasions, Germany's Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Marcus Ehning, and Rodrigo
Pessoa from Brazil. Pessoa has the distinction of being the only rider to secure three
back-to-back wins, and he did so with the same stallion, Baloubet du Rouet, between
1998 and 2000.

reflects a strong devotion to tradition, elegance and performance. It has generations
