    Your ShadingProblems Solved

    The Main Story

You have a lot of shades or blinds, so youdont bother adjusting many of them.

    Your current automated window treatments

    are noisy.

Youd like to press one button that lowers

shades, dims lights, and starts an audio-

    visual system.

    Problem

Our automated window treatments providetouch of a button control via keypads,

wireless remotes, and mobile devices, so you

can adjust several window treatments at one

time with a single button press.

Our automated window treatments utilize a

    quiet, low-voltage drive, so movement

    isnt disruptive.

You can integrate our automated window

treatments with third-party control systems for

one button control that will lower shades,

dim lights, and start a movie.

    Lutron Solution

    Noisy shades?

    Complex architecture?

Limited fabric choices?Chances are, youve probably experienced

your share of issues with window treatments.

So weve compiled a list of problems that

    might sound familiarand how Lutron

    automated window treatments can provide

    just the right solutions.

    Problem

You have windows that are difficult to reach.

    Lutron Solution

Having automated control also means you

can cover windows that are hard to reach.

    4 The Main Story

Due to the architecture in the room, youcant run wires for automated shades.

Our cellular shades are wire-free, so theyre

ideal for challenging situations. Theyre also a

great design solution for applications where

running wire would be cumbersome, such as

    with French doors.

Your Venetian blinds arent very versatile.

    The stackback from traditional drapery

    obstructs your view.

You frequently need to replace the battery

    in your shade.

    Our Venetian blinds provide independent

control of blind height and slat angle.

Our blinds also feature independent tilt and lift

control, and ensure that the tilt position between

adjacent blinds remains within 1/16th of an inch.

Our Kirb vertical drapery system lifts fabric

up (instead of opening and closing from side to

side) and completely out of the way, eliminating

    stack back.

Our new cellular shades have a 3-year battery

    lifemuch longer than other battery-powered

    shades currently available.

When it comes to preventing heat loss, these shades can make a huge impact.

You already know that shades are an effortless

way to conserve energy. Simply lowering them in

the summer prevents the suns harsh rays from

heating up a room (and causing air conditioning

to work overtime), while raising them in the

winter captures heat from those rays.

But now there are new shades in town

shades that provide even greater energy

savingsso much more, in fact, that they can

double the R value of a triple-pane window.

    The game-changer?

    Lutron cellular shades.

These wire-free, battery powered shades have

air pockets that trap heat, providing superior

insulation. Cellular shades come in a variety

of styles, and as you can see from the chart

above, deliver varying R values depending on

the style. (R values are a measure of thermal

resistance; the larger the R value, the more

    effective the product.)

    Adding a room-darkening, single-cell shadeto a single-pane window, for example, can

increase that windows R value more than

five timesgiving it a better R value than a

    shade-less, double-pane, low-e argon window.

And that R value is also better than a triple-

pane, low-e window without any shades at all.

(Obviously, you need to lower cellular shades

in order to capitalize on their energy-saving

    benefits.)

    0 Featured Professional

Dennis ListerDEL Motorized Solutions, Bensalem, PennsylvaniaThis edition we talked to Dennis Lister, President

of DEL Motorized Solutions. Recognized as

one of the leaders in the motorized window

treatment industry, DEL offers a full staff of

    in-house fabricators, project designers,

    customer service staff, support technicians,

    and system installers.

    Are your design services strictly

residential, or do you do some

    commercial design, as well?

Our primary focus is in servicing the high-

end market (residential and commercial). We

believe that a philosophy of customer first will

allow our business to grow organically through

referrals. Although the larger portion of ourbusiness derives from the residential market,

building a strong partnership with our clientele is

the crucial component to providing products for

    both residential and commercial projects.

    Are clients requesting more standalone

    motorized shades or motorized shades

that are incorporated into a system?

In years past a standalone system was generallywhat clients requested. However, as with

modern day cell phones, more and more we

require systems that are smarter to fit our

    clients contemporary, technology forwarded

thinking. When given the choice, a majority

of our clients would prefer a system with

integration options that are scalable, allowing

them to build on the system as desired.

    Featured Professional:

Are there particular rooms in a home

    where clients request motorized

    window treatments more than

    other rooms?

Although any room with a window is a good

    candidate for motorized window treatments,

we have found our clients primary requests

are for rooms with function, such as family

rooms, bedrooms, and home theaters. Having

uncontrolled ambient light can be detrimental

to the purpose and efficiency of a room. We

also use our motorized shading products in

rooms with large or numerous windows, as

well as areas where exposed cords are not

    aesthetically pleasing.

    Are your clients predominantly asking

    for motorized window treatments to

solve problems (such as hard to reach

    windows), for convenience, or simply

because of the wow factor motorized

    window treatments can add to

    their residence?

I believe many customers come looking for

motorized window treatments to address a

specific need such as hard to reach windowsor the wow factor, but quickly learn after

living with the system that motorized window

treatments greatly improve their lives. The

versatility an automated product creates makes

it invaluable for energy efficiency, convenience,

aesthetics, and safety as well as the

    wow factor.

Why do you choose to use Lutron products?

Its critical for us to align ourselves with companies

who share our drive for customer satisfaction. So

the choice to align with Lutron was clear, as the

companys name is synonymous with quality. Lutron

manufactures products that are simple to install and

program and require no maintenance. Their intuitive

systems keep us a step ahead of the competition.

What do you think about Lutrons new

cellular shade in terms of a new business

opportunity for you? What sort of different

markets do you think it will allow you

    to enter?

Lutrons new cellular shade will definitely have an

impact on our ability to effectively reach and compete

in the entry-level motorization market. This shade

offers customers a quiet, high-quality product while

    staying within their budget.

Can you share an application where youve

used automated window treatments in areally cool way?

One project that comes to mind was located in a

beach community. The client wanted to have a home

theater installed in his family room. The problem was

that this massive beachfront home was built using an

open floor plan, so there werent any walls separating

the living room, dining room, kitchen, and family

roomswhich made the possibility of darkening

the area for movie viewing improbable. To further

complicate the matter, the house was built using a

radius. We designed a system in which large shades

built into and hidden within pockets lowered from the

ceiling on three sides, creating a room. We achieved

complete blackout on a project that was thought to

    be impossible.

Spotlighton styleA look back at the

    colors of 2011

With a new year right around the corner, we though

it might be fun to review the colors that were

prominent in this years designs, courtesy of the

    Color Marketing Group.

Residentially, consumers saw brighter, clearer colors

in a reflection of optimism. The red/yellow/orange

    spectrum introduced:Achiote, an intense retro

red, taken from the Latin American berry, as well as

Fire Chi, an energetic orange, which represented

abundance, and Honey Moon, a vintage yellow,

    which combined butter and ochre.

Green, blue, and purple also had their share of

colors that popped. Lichen-It, a mossy green,

was a color directly derived from nature, as

opposed to being a pumped-up green. Green

Thumb was a stylish blue-green that spoke of

    self-assurance. Tetra, an aqueous blue-green,

was inspired from the Caribbean islands, while

muted Blustalgia lent a hip, urban attitude to

blue. And going beyond navy was inky blue-

black Tradicin. Urban Gentry, a sophisticated

violet, was an intense shade that worked with

    either warm or cool neutrals.

Residential colors gave a nod to earth tones,

too, with warm, coppery brown Habaa, stone-

colored Cementatious, and mid-tone gray Tail

    Feathers.

Commercial colors also saw a mix of bright

colors along with colors that represented natural

materials, including Bounce Back (red), Quiet

Riot (blue), Incognito (Gray), and Tattoo (black).

This palette represented energy as well as a

    trend toward all things homegrown.
