The2019-2020MarchingBandseasonisnowunderway!Nextweektheprocessoflearning
the2019competitiveshowwillbegin!Pleasetakeacloselookatthesummerandfallschedule.
ParticipationinscheduledrehearsalsISREQUIREDofallbandstudentswhowillbeapartofthe
MarchingBand.Exceptionswillbeexplainedinthefollowingpacketofinformation,alongwithother
necessaryinformationaboutthisorganization.
Oursummerprogramwillrunfiveweekswithsomebreakstotrytoaccommodatemostfamily
vacationsandsummercamps.Staffmembersandsectionleadersmayalsoholdextrameetingsfor
additionalhelpwithmarching,musicorroutines.Theseadditionalrehearsalsarealsorequired.
AllstudentsareexpectedtoreportEARLYandbereadytogowithallnecessaryitemssorehearsals
canbeginONTIME.
Wewillmakeeveryefforttoadheretotheenclosedschedule.PLEASEPLANAPPOINTMENTS
ANDOTHERCOMMITMENTSAROUNDTHISSCHEDULE.If,forsomereason,weneedtochangea

ORGANIZATIONALPHILOSOPHYANDGOALSThegoalofthemarchingbandprogramintheJamestownCitySchoolDistrictistoprovideeverychild
with authenticmusical, social, and intellectual experiences, the purpose of which is to enrich each
student’slifeandhelpthemgrowintopeopleofintegritywithsocialandculturalawareness.
ATTENDANCE&PARTICIPATIONPOLICYAttendanceisrequiredatallrehearsalsandperformances,includingtheHolidayParade(December)
andtheMemorialDayParade(May).MarchingBandisagroupactivityandallstudentsaredependent
ontheentiregroupforsoundaswellasmarchingform.Ifsomeoneisnotthere,otherscannotdotheir
jobproperly.Beingabsentdoesnotonlyhurtoneperson,ithurtstheentiregroup.
The following are considered excused absences from a band practice. Asmuch advance notice as
possibleisappreciated.Mrs.MurrayMUSTbeinformedofanabsenceBEFOREitoccurswithahand-
writtennotefromtheparent.

ENFORCEMENTIt isthephilosophyoftheJHSMarchingBandstaffthatenforcementoftheattendancepolicyshould
promotefairness,accountability,andtheacquisitionofskillsmissedduringanyabsence.Therefore,if
astudentislateormissesapracticetheymaybeaskedtocomeinforextratimeoutsideoftheregular
rehearsalschedule.Thismaymeancominginearlyorstayinglate,butcouldalsomeancominginona
daywhenthereisnorehearsalscheduledtoworkwithastaffmembertomakeupwhattheymissed.
This is not intended to be a punishment but rather to help teach accountability, responsibility,
punctuality,aswellasfurthereachstudent’seducation.
BEHAVIORPOLICYBand members are expected to follow all Jamestown Public School policies regarding appropriate
student behavior and code of conduct. Violation of the followingwill be handled through existing
school policy: bullying, public displays of affection, class cut, destruction of school property,
disrespect, drugs, alcohol, fighting, gambling, knives or weapons, profanity, sexual harassment,
smokeless tobacco, smoking, and stealing. In the event that existing school policy does not cover a
negative student behavior, the band director and staff will evaluate behavior and appropriate
disciplinaryactionwillbedeterminedbasedupontheseverityof the incidentand its impacton the
band.Basedupontheseverityoftheincident,appropriateschoolofficialswillbenotified.Discipline
mayincludeaparentmeetingwiththestudentanddirectorand/orremovingastudentfromoneor
moreperformances,exclusionfromtripsordismissalfromthebandprogram.Ifastudent’sconduct
duringabandfunctionorotherwiseresultsinthestudentreceivingOSS,thatstudentmaybe
removedfromMarchingBandforuptoonefullcalendaryear.
CODEOFCONDUCT1) MembersoftheJHSMarchingBandareexpectedtorepresenttheorganizationinthebestway
possibleATALLTIMES,inandoutofrehearsal&school.Infractionsofourcodeofconductinclude,
but are not limited to,useof foul and inappropriate language, negative interactionswith other
students,bullying,andcyberbullying.Thedirectorandschoolprincipalwillinvestigateandevaluate
anyinstancesofallegedmisconductandappropriateconsequenceswillbehandedout.Iftheinstance
provestogoagainstthecodeofconducttheinvolvedperson(s)maybesuspendedorremovedfrom
theorganization.

Bullying of any kindwill not be tolerated. Students that engage in this type of behavior,whether
directlyorindirectly,willbesubjecttotheconsequencessetforthinthishandbook.Consequencescan
include, but arenot limited to, conferenceswithparents and school administrators and suspension
fromeventsorperformances.Severeinstancesmayresultinremovalfromtheorganization.
2) The Jamestown Public Schools recognize that the use of certain substances such as tobacco,
including chewing tobacco and snuff, alcohol, and other drugs is a significant health problem and
illegal for many adolescents. This can have negative effects on behavior, learning, and the total
developmentofeachindividual,whichincludesone’sphysicalandmentalabilities.Therefore,itisthe
philosophy of the Jamestown Public School District to forbid any student participating in the JHS
MarchingBandtouse,possess,sell,orotherwisedistributethesesubstances,orrelatedparaphernalia.
This code is in effect eachmarching season -24hoursperday, sevendaysaweek, onandoff school
property.
DuringtheseasonofpracticeaparticipatingMarchingBandmembershallnot:
1. use,possess,orselltobacco(whichincludeschewingtobaccoandsnuff).
2. use,possess,orsellabeveragecontainingalcohol.
3. use,possess,orsellacontrolledsubstance.
4. remain in theunauthorizedpresenceof alcohol, tobacco, orother controlled
substances.
NOTE: It isnotaviolation fora student tousea legallydefineddrugspecificallyprescribedby the
student’sowndoctor.

Witness credibility in this process is highly valued. Reports of alleged violations coming from the
individualslistedbelow(a)-(c)havingpersonallywitnessedtheviolationwillbeinvestigated.
(a)Anydistrictemployee
(b)Anylawenforcementofficer*oragency*,or
(c)Aparent/legalguardianofthestudentinvolved

InsuchcasesMrs.Murraywill takeimmediateaction,removingthestudentfromallbandactivities.
Parentswill be notified verbally upon such action and inwritingwithin 3 days atwhich point the
parents may request a conference. This decision can only be overturned by the Principal or
Superintendent.
If a student or other person not mentioned above who witnessed the incident brings accusations
againstastudent,thesituationwillbeaddressedinthefollowingmanner:
(a) During the period of an alleged violation and the subsequent investigation, the
MarchingBandmemberwillcontinuetoparticipateasafullmemberoftheband.
(b) ThesereportswillbeconsideredbytheMarchingBanddirector,staffmembersand
schoolprincipal,ifnecessary.
(c) Theywilldetermineiftheallegedviolationhasvalidity.
(d) The Marching Band director and/or principal will confront the student on the
allegedviolation.Ifthestudentagreeswiththeallegedviolation,theactionsstated
inthishandbookwillapply. Ifthestudentstatesthattheallegedviolationisfalse,
the principal and Marching Band director will investigate the accusations and
determineifthereissufficientjustificationfordisciplinaryactions.
ENFORCEMENT
AnyviolationofeithertheBehaviorPolicyorCodeofConductisconsideredConductUnbecomingof
aBandMember.TheMarchingBanddirectorwillassesseachcase.Disciplinaryactionwillbetaken
immediatelyandmayincludesuspensionfromcompetitionsorremovalfromtheorganization.Inthe
caseofasuspension,thestudentmustcontinuetoparticipateinallbandrehearsalsandmusttravel
withthebandtoallcompetitionsandperformances.Allfeesassociatedwiththeorganizationwillstill
apply.

REHEARSALEXPECTATIONS1)ATTIRE Studentsmustcometoeachrehearsalwearingappropriateattire.Thisincludes:

Studentswillberesponsibleforhavingabackpackdedicatedtomarchingband.This
backpackwillcontainallofthematerialsneededforeachrehearsalandfortraveling.
JHSMarchingBandbackpackscanbepurchased(seeFormpacket).Thisbackpack
mustbebroughttoeveryrehearsalandoneverytrip.Theymustbeusedonlyfor
marchingbandandmustcontain:

EverystudentwillalsoberesponsibleforbringingawaterjugtoEVERYpractice
andonEVERYtrip.Itisextremelyimportantforthestudentstostayhydrated.
Theirwaterjugmustholdbetween0.5gallonand1gallonofwater.

STUDENTLEADERSUpperclassmenplayamajorrole inthesuccessofourprogram. LeadershippositionsincludeDrum
Majors, Squad Leaders and Rehearsal Coordinators. These, as well as all upperclassmen, are the
studentswhohave themostknowledgeandexperience andare instructed to share this experience
withtheotherstudentsinapositiveandencouragingway.Allstudentsholdingaleadershipposition
areselectedthroughanauditionprocess.

COLORGUARD The color guard is an important visual aspect of the Marching Band. Color guard members are full
membersoftheMarchingBand.Theymustmeetallrequirementsandareaffordedallprivilegesrelated
totheMarchingBand.Studentswhoplayaninstrumentinmiddleschoolorhighschoolbandare
expectedtoplaythatinstrumentiftheychoosetobeinMarchingBand. However,theyaremore
thanwelcometoparticipateinWinterGuard.Someexceptionscanbemadeatthedirector’sdiscretion.
*ParticipationinColorGuardisarequirementforparticipationintheExpressWinterGuard.

PERFORMANCEPOLICY
Studentsmaybeaskedtositoutofaperformanceforanyofthefollowingreasons:

TRAVELANDTRANSPORTATION Studentsareexpectedtotravelwiththebandtoandfromallactivities.Allowingstudentstotravel
toor fromeventswithparentsopens toomanypossibilities forerror. As thesafetyofstudents isour
primaryconcernwecannotallowthemalternatetravelopportunities.
SPECIALTRIPSOneoftheprivilegesofbeingintheJamestownHighSchoolRedRaiderMarchingBandrevolvesaround
our travel opportunities. While many organizations dream about taking trips together we are in a
positiontomakethesedreamscometrue.Itservesaspositivetestimonytotheworkethicofourband
members,andisoneoftheprivilegesweenjoyasagroup.
Weareenjoying the fruitsof the laborseededbyyourolderpeers. Traditionally,bandmembershave
served as positive reflections of our school and community while traveling. Our future bands are

countingonyoutopassonthatsameheritageso theywillhaveasimilarkindof learningopportunity
duringtheirhighschoolcareers.
Inatravelsituation,thereareoccasionswhereimmediatedisciplinaryactionwouldinhibittheabilityof
thedirectorstoprovideasafeandprofitableexperiencefortheentiregroup.Shouldthisoccasionarise,
wewillaskthoseinquestiontoreturnhomeattheparent/legalguardian’sexpense,andtheproblemwill
beaddressedimmediatelyfollowingthetrip.
MEDICALMarchingBand is an extremelyphysical activity. Students are strongly encouraged tohaveaphysical
examinationbeforeparticipation. All studentsmusthavea completedmedicalhistoryandemergency
medicalreleaseformonfilebeforetheywillbepermittedonanybandtrips.
Students that have anymedical conditions (i.e. heart, breathing, or joint problems) thatwould
restrict theirability to safelyparticipate inall aspectsof thebandprogramwillbe required to
have a physical and provide a doctor’s release before they can be included in rehearsals or
performances.
INTENSIVEWEEKIntensiveWeek is just that – intensive! It isduring thisweek that theband learns themajorityof the
competitiveshow.Inadditiontotheshowmusic,marchingtechniquesanddrillsarepolished.Oncethat
week is over, our competitive season begins! Every session of every day of Intensive Week is
MANDATORYforallstudents.

BANDBOOSTERORGANIZATIONAs the parent of a student in the marching band, you are a Band Booster! The Band Booster
organizationisasupportgroupfortheJamestownHighSchoolMarchingBand.Itsprimaryfunctionisto
helporganizeandimplementprogramsthatsupplementandenhancethebandexperiencebeyondwhat
theschooldistrictcanprovide. Ifyouwouldliketobemoreinvolved(i.e.chairaneventorbecomean
officer),pleasecontactMrs.Murray.
ACTIVITYFEE
Theexpenseforparticipatinginmarchingbandis$175.Thisfeecoverseverythingyourchildwillneed
throughouttheseasonincludingmusic,drill,staffsupport,transportation,equipment,uniforms,andthe
overnight trip to Syracuse in October. This trip includes the hotel, transportation in a coach bus,
admissiontoChampionshipstoperformandwatch,allmealsandabreakfastbanquet.Thismaybepaid

INSTRUMENTCARE&MAINTENANCEWhetheryouhaveaschool-ownedinstrumentoryourowneachstudentisresponsibleforthecareand
maintenanceof their instrument. Specific instructionswillbegiven toeach sectionby the staff. If an
instrumentisinneedofrepairbringittotheattentionofastaffmemberBEFOREsendingittotheshop.
THEBANDUNIFORM
Everyband studentwill receive a uniform. Forwind andpercussionists, this includes a garment bag,
jacket,pants,gauntlets,shoeswithshoebag,glovesandhat.Forcolorguard,thisincludestwouniforms:
the standardMarching Band uniform (black jazz pants with the red/black/silver marching band top,
blackguardshoes)andtheshowuniform.Theonlyitemsthestudentswillneedtoprovideontheirown
are black socks, shorts and a squad t-shirt ($16/$18 (2xl,3xl) – sold at the beginning of the season).
Please remember, the squad t-shirt is part of the uniform andMUST be worn underneath the
jacketeverytime.

UNIFORM/EQUIPMENTINSPECTIONBeforeeachperformance,uniformswillbe inspected. Consecutive failed inspectionsmayresult innotbeingable toperformwith thebanduntil theuniformsuccessfullypasses inspection.Additionally, theuniform is toworn in full or not at all. ATNOTIME SHOULD STUDENTSWEARONLYPARTOFAUNIFORM.Thisincludeshavingthebackofthejacketunzippedorthestrapsofthebibshangingdown.ThePants:
1. Thepantswill fit highupon the chest. They shouldbeadjusted so that thebottomsof thepants touch the tops of the shoes and are approximately one inch from the ground. Theyshould not drag on the ground. The crease should be straight the entire way down (nobunchingatthebottom).
2. Thelengthcanbeadjustedwiththebuilt-insuspenders,butmayneedtobehemmed.3. Youshouldwearshorts,and/orlongunderwear(ifnecessary),undertheuniformpants. No
denim!

TheCoat/Gauntlets:
1. Gauntlets are worn around the wrists and should be worn so that the ends of the sleevescannotbeseen.
2. Youshouldhaveacollarlinersnappedinsidethecoatneck(thisiswashable).3. Theneckcollarishookedshut.4. YoumustalwaysweartheSQUADSHIRTunderyourcoat.
TheHat:
1. Longhairmustbebraidedtofitneatlyinthehat. Frenchbraidsworkbest. Nopiecesofhairshouldbestickingoutofthehat. Headbandsmayworktohelpwiththis,butmakesuretheheadbandcannotbeseenwiththehaton,especiallyintheback.
2. Thebrimofthehatislevelattheeyebrowsandthetopofthehatisstraightacross.3. Thechinstrapshouldrestunderthechin.4. Theplumeisstraight.
TheGloves:
1. Allsectionswearglovesexceptthepercussionsectionandcolorguard.Yourfirstpairisfree.Afterthat,youmustpurchaseyourownglovesfor$3apair.Itisalwaysagoodideatohaveanextrapair!
2. Flutesandclarinetsmaychoosetocutthefingersoutonthepalmsideoftheglovesforopenkeys that require coverage. DONOTCUTTHEFINGERTOPSOFFOFTHEGLOVES. Let thesquadleaderorastaffmembercuttheglovesforyou.
3. Glovesshouldalwaysbecleanforaperformance.TheShoes:
1. Shoeswillbeprovided. Thesearereusedeachyear. Ifyouwishtopurchaseanewpair foryourchildtokeepyoumaydosofor$40.
