TCAA and VSL Switzerland-Heavy Lifting, has successfully completed the heavy lifting works of 7,000-tonnes steel superstructure of Marina Bay Sands Skypark that sits on top of Marina Bay Sands hotel towers. The 340m long Skypark is 200m above the ground level linking the three hotel towers with a 64m long cantilever at Hotel Tower 3 end.

The construction of Marina Bay Sands Skypark steel structure was divided into 14 heavy lifts of the major components over a period of 3 months.

VSL scope of work included design of approximate 2,100-tonnes temporary steel structure for the lifting works, methodology, supply for temporary VSL CT stress bars and heavy lifting operation.

The heavy lifting component consists of lifting and sliding of a pair of Box Girder on top of Hotel Tower 3, lifting of 6 nos. of Link Bridges between Hotel Tower 1-2 and Hotel Tower 2-3, and lifting of 6 nos. of Hotel Tower 3North Cantilever segments.

Tower 3 Box Girders LiftingLifting of T3 Box Girders were carried out together by two sets of lifting frame supported on top of the hotel tower shear walls. The main girder of the lifting frames was made up of built up plate girders and spliced into different segment length considering its installation and assembly by tower crane. VSL CT stress bars were used to connect splice blocks between girder segments. Each lifting frame required 4 units of SLUs for this lifting operation.

Tower 1-2 and 2-3 Link Bridges Lifting

Lifting of Link Bridge Girders between towers was carried out together by lifting frames on each tower. The lifting frame is stationary for the lifting operation and is supported on the permanent structure of the towers at Level 55. One unit of SLU lifting equipment Jack was installed on top each Cantilever Beam, which slid the Link Bridge Girder along Lifting Frame Main Beam. Due to tower crane obstruction, the Link Bridge Girders are required to be temporary load transfered onto sliding beam at Level 55M and slid for approx. 10m before it picked up again by 2nd set of SLU lifting equipment and continue to sliding to its final position along Lifting Frame Main Girder.

Tower 3 North Cantilever Segment Lifting

A pair of Self-launching Lifting Frames were used to carry out the lifting of 6 North Cantilever segments. 4 units of SLU lifting equipment were installed on top of the lifting frame with ability to be adjusted independently in both transverse and longitudinal direction to suit each segment lifting position. Due to its critical completion schedule, work was carried out for 24 hours a day until completion of the cantilever was achieved.
