MATCH INFORMATION MATCH PREVIEW

Seattle Sounders FC continues its quest for a record fifth Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title Tuesday evening against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium (7:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on Sounder-sFC.com, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM) after beating Kitsap Pumas 2-0 in the Fourth Round on June 15. The two MLS sides meet each other in the tournament’s Round of 16.

Four-time U.S. Open Cup champion, Seattle has displayed dom-inance in the tournament since joining MLS in 2009. This unprec-edented stretch ties Chicago Fire for the most U.S. Open Cup championships by an MLS club. In 2011, the Rave Green became the first club since 1968 to win three straight U.S. Open Cups. In its four championship runs, the Rave Green beat D.C. United on the road in the 2009 Final, and ousted the Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire at CenturyLink Field in 2010 and 2011. Seattle then won the 2014 tournament with a 3-1 extra time road win over the Philadelphia Union 3-1 at PPL Park.

Following Tuesday’s match, Sounders FC continues its road swing with a road match against Toronto FC at BMO Field on Sat-urday, July 2 (4:30 p.m. PT / JOEtv, ROOT SPORTS, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM)

ABOUT REAL SALT LAKEReal Salt Lake currently sits in third place in the Western Conference with 27 points. The club has posted an 8-5-3 record in the 2016 campaign, including an unblemished 5-0-1 mark at home. RSL’s 27 goals scored ranks tied for third-most in the conference, while its 26 goals allowed ranks as the third-most in the West. Prior to a 2-0 road loss to FC Dallas on June 25, RSL was unbeat-en in three league matches, including a 3-2 win at New York City FC and a 2-1 home win versus the New York Red Bulls.

In the Fourth Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, RSL topped USL side Wilmington Hammerheads in a penalty-kick shootout on June 14 at Rio Tinto Stadium. After falling behind to a 2-0 deficit early in the second half, Joao Plata and Burrito Martinez scored in the 64th and 87th minute, respectively, to send the two sides to a shootout after a scoreless extra time period. The host club topped the visitors 3-1 on penalties.

RAVE GREEN TOP KITSAP PUMASSecond-half goals from Cristian Roldan and Joevin Jones gave Seattle Sound-ers FC a 2-0 win over the Kitsap Pumas on June 15 in the Fourth Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Starfire Stadium. Aaron Kovar and Erik Friberg recorded the assists and goalkeeper Tyler Miller kept a clean-sheet as the Rave Green advance to the Fifth Round of the tournament.

After 70 minutes of scoreless play, Roldan put Seattle on the board first when he found the end of a Kovar cross inside the 18-yard-box and put a deflected shot past Kitsap goalkeeper Matt Grosey for the 1-0 lead. The goal marks the second professional goal for Roldan, who previously scored in the 2014 Sounders FC 2 season-opener against Sacramento Republic FC, also held at Starfire Stadium. Jones, who came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute, made it 2-0 in sec-ond-half stoppage time when he got behind the defense on a through-ball from Friberg. The winger from Trinidad & Tobago calmly put a well-placed shot into the back of the net for his second goal in as many games. Jones scored his first Sounders FC goal in the club’s last competitive match, a 2-0 win at D.C. United on June 1. Sounders FC is now 22-2-3 all-time since joining MLS in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play, including a 18-1-1 record at home. Winner of the U.S. Open Cup in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014, Sounders FC is tied with the Chicago Fire for the most titles in the tournament among MLS clubs. Maccabi Los Angeles and Bethlehem Steel FC hold the record with five wins apiece. In 2011, Sound-ers FC became the first team since 1968 to win three consecutive Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships

GOING FOR THE RECORDTuesday’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup clash is Seattle’s next step in its attempt to recapture the title last claimed two years ago. In 2014, Sounders FC became the second MLS team to win its fourth Open Cup trophy, joining the Chicago Fire.

All told, 11 teams in the 101-year history of the tournament have won three or more championships. Maccabi Los Angeles and Bethlehem Steel lead all teams with five wins, while the Greek American AA, Philadelphia Ukranians, Chicago Fire and Fall River Marksmen have all captured four titles. Along with Sounders FC, the other three-time winners include the New York Pancypri-an-Freedoms, Stix, Baer and Fuller, D.C. United and Sporting Kansas City, who won the 2015 title.

2015 U.S. OPEN CUP FLASHBACKSeattle Sounders FC dropped a 3-1 result to the Portland Timbers at Starfire Stadium in the Fourth Round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. After claiming four Open Cup titles in six years, Sounders FC exited the competition after its first match for the second time since entering Major League Soccer in 2009. Last year’s home defeat marked the first-ever loss for Sounders FC at Starfire Stadium in the MLS era, after the home side went down to a seven men following the ejection of three players and an injury to another throughout the contest.

The contest was marked by eight total bookings and three ejections, beginningwith a second yellow card for Sounders FC captain Brad Evans in the69th minute. Despite playing with only ten men at the time, the Rave Greenrallied to secure an equalizer down the stretch, as Dylan Remick served ina corner-kick in the 79th minute that fell to Seattle forward Obafemi Martins. The Nigerian pounced on a failed clearance from Portland goalkeeper AdamKwarasey, cleaning-up a loose ball inside the Timbers six-yard-box to makethe score-line 1-1.

Portland claimed the lead once more through Rodney Wallace in the 100thminute of play, with his strike promptly followed by the ejections of MichealAzira and Clint Dempsey in the 111th and 112th minutes, respectively. Sound-ers FC conceded a third goal to Portland courtesy of Maximiliano Urruti in the116th minute to cap the night’s scoring.

Dempsey’s actions earned him a lengthy suspension from U.S. Soccer. The USMNT veteran is banned from Open Cup play for two years or six matchhes, whichever is greater.

SOUNDERS FC HISTORY

HEAD COACH SIGI SCHMIDNamed the first Head Coach of Seattle Sounders FC on December 16, 2008, Sigi Schmid is the winningest coach in MLS history. Since 1999, Schmid’s teams have won nine major titles, including two MLS Cups.

A two-time MLS Coach of the Year, Schmid has led Sounders FC to seven-consecutive appearances in the MLS Cup Playoffs, marking the second-longest active streak while nearing the record for most consecutive postseason appearances by an expansion team.

Schmid also guided Sounders FC to a record three-straight Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles, becoming the first team in 42 years to win back-to-back championships.

Schmid joined Sounders FC in its inaugural campaign after leading the Co-lumbus Crew to its first MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield, earning MLS Coach of the Year honors in 2008. From 1999 through 2004, Schmid’s L.A. Galaxy teams won four major competitions: the 2002 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield, the 2001 U.S. Open Cup and the 2001 CONCACAF Champions Cup. He was voted the MLS Coach of the Year in his first season, 1999. Altogether, his Gal-axy teams were 79-53-32 and reached the MLS Cup final four times, winning three division crowns.

Schmid has twice served as the U.S. U-20 National Team head coach, most re-cently in 2005 at the FIFA World Championships. Schmid first forged a winning tradition at his alma mater, UCLA. After serving as an assistant, he was elevat-ed to head coach of the Bruins in 1980, beginning a 19-year run at the helm. He claimed three national titles (1985, 1990, 1997) and was named national coach of the year following the 1997 championship. His UCLA teams accumu-lated a record of 322-64-33. Schmid ranks No. 1 in MLS career victories (227) and games coached (500). Overall, Schmid’s record in MLS is 227-162-112. His combined postseason win total (26) is the second-highest in MLS history.
