Local Private Tutors

Page 11: ME Mar/Apr 2013

11

In the run up to the SATs in May we enter a critical time for year six children as they prepare themselves for secondary school.

We spoke to a local private tutor who gives us a little advice on how to best prepare our children for this big step in their lives.

Terry Greaves of Primary Plus said: “By now you will know whether your child is going to a comprehensive, grammar or public school. This is an important time in their lives, moving to secondary school is major transition and there is still much that can be done to make sure they enter with confidence and fully prepared.

“At the end of June each comprehensive school holds an exam which helps teachers to stream the children when they start in September. After this there is very little movement between streams for the next five years.

“If you want your child to enter school in one of the higher streams then the next few months provide a small window to help them reach their full potential and set them on the right path.

“At Primary Plus we offer a free initial assessment which enables us to give you a clear idea of your child’s potential. The help of a private tutor at this time can make a huge difference to your child’s experience throughout

secondary school, ensuring that he or she enters at as a high a level as they are capable of.”

Primary Plus is located in the Jewellery Quarter with on-street parking. There are two dedicated teaching rooms that can accommodate up to six children. The teaching sessions are 90 minutes long and are 5pm-6.30pm and 6.30-8pm weekdays and 11.30-1pm Saturdays.

Teaching focuses on general literacy and numeracy support, SATs preparation and 11 plus preparation.

New Pet Boutique for HarborneIf you’ve noticed your cat or dog becoming a little over-excited recently, it might well be that they are simply looking forward to the opening of Topsy’s Pet Boutique; the brand new shop in Harborne for all discerning Cats and Dogs.

Selling designer couture and quality products and gifts, Topsy’s Pet Boutique is the brainchild of Daisy Morley, and the namesake of her 9 month old Maltese puppy, Topsy. Recently graduated from Birmingham School of Acting, Daisy came up with the idea for her shop when she found that buying beautiful products for Topsy wasn’t as easy as she had thought it would be; “There are lot of cat and dog products on the market, but I couldn’t find unique products in the shops, and I couldn’t ‘feel’ the quality of items online, and so I decided to pull the two things together; unique and special pet products that you can see and feel before you buy,” she said.

Topsy’s Pet Boutique prides itself in supporting independent British companies and the majority of items in store are made in Great Britain. As well as selling the highest quality collars, leads, coats, clothes, toys and accessories for cats and dogs, Topsy’s Pet Boutique also sells gifts and treats for pets and owners alike. Look out for the ‘pick’n’mix’ treats for pets as well as special homemade treats made right here in Harborne.

And there are great plans in the pipeline for Topsy’s Pet Boutique with special events happening throughout the year (see website for details) and lots of

opportunities for pets and owners to pop in and enjoy a shop designed for them. As Daisy says, “Buying products for your precious pet should be an exciting experience, like buying yourself a new dress. Half the fun is in the choosing.”

Topsy’s Pet Boutique opens in March. See website for full details: www.topsyspetboutique.co.uk

Sold subject to contractMoving house is often one of the most exciting times in our life – and at the same time it is right up there as one of the most stressful too.

In the second of our ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we meet Chris Beddow, Solicitor, who specialises in conveyancing and helps people complete their sale and purchase as smoothly as possible.

Most people do not move house very often, so when they do the process is usually new to them or at most a distant memory. Also there are elements which are slightly out of their control, with maybe four, five or six people in the chain all with different agendas.

Some people want to move quickly, others want to take their time, and some people have children moving schools so want to tie in with school holidays.

And this is where it really makes a difference having a conscientious, understanding solicitor on your side. Chris at Tyndallwoods takes the time to get to know his clients, understand what they expect, help them understand the procedure and what they need to do.

When people go to see Chris they generally have found a house and agreed a sale. And he guides them through the process which usually takes from six to

ten weeks. Not every sale or purchase is without its pitfalls though and Chris is on hand to help guide people through any issue which may arise, be it right of way, apartment management, or environmental.

You want someone on your side who you can trust and rely on when undertaking something as big as the sale and purchase of your home, someone local with a good reputation. And that is where Chris and his team come in.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Chris on 0121 693 2222

Friendship, fresh air and exercise golf has it allFind out for yourself at Midlands Golf Week, a festival of free and low-cost Get into golf events for all.

It will run across eight counties from 12-21 April and there’s a full schedule of events including free Get into golf lessons, taster events, family fun days, coffee mornings and sample golf evenings.

The week is endorsed by Steve Backley, who won javelin medals at three consecutive Olympics and was world number one. Backley, a keen golfer, said of the sport: “I have found it to be the perfect post-athletics career activity to keep me sane.”

The Midlands Golf Week is now in its third year and has proved to be a great success with new golfers and returners to the game. Last year over 3500 people sampled the sport during the event and this year the organisers expect even more interest.

Golf ’s winning combination of exercise, sporting skill and social interaction make it the perfect tonic for good health and happiness.

There’s no better sport for bringing people together – whatever their age, gender, background or ability. With plenty of time for conversation and fun, golf is the perfect way to make new friends or grow closer bonds with people you already know.

Nicky Greenacre can vouch for that. When her husband began to play golf seriously she decided to take up the game and started at women-only coaching sessions. “The course was just brilliant,” said the 48-year-old. “We were nine women, all different ages and we all got on and had such a laugh. We just had the best time.”

So don’t delay! If you enjoy fresh air and friendship then Get into golf at the Midlands Golf Week.

All you have to do is visit getintogolf.org, book your session and turn up on the day in comfortable clothing. Equipment is provided.

Spring is here!

And where better to enjoy the burst of colour and life than at Martineau Gardens.

Spring is the time we look forward to, to see the landscape around us awakening after the long, harsh winter. At Martineau Gardens, a community garden in Edgbaston, a warm welcome awaits you.

The Garden, which is looked after by a team of volunteers and Martineau Gardens staff, is two and a half acres of organically managed landscape.

There’s a vast array of features to explore and enjoy within the grounds, including an orchard, woodland, formal gardens

with plants and shrubs from around the world, vegetable beds, ponds, a wildflower meadow and a bird hide. At this time of year, highlights of the Garden include the blossom trees – cherry, damson and plum coming into flower.

Spring is of course one of the busiest times for the gardener, planting seeds and potting on plants. At Martineau Gardens you will find compost, manure, wood chip plus a selection of cottage garden plants, trees and shrubs for sale.

Plus you will get the chance to refresh your plans for the gardening year ahead, all in the surroundings of a beautiful organic community garden. Tea and cake are available in the tearoom and you are welcome to take along a picnic.

Hollytrees Animal Rescue Trust During the winter months two instances of animals in distress were brought to the attention of staff of Tyndallwoods Solicitors.

The first, a dog who became the innocent victim of the unhappy breakdown of a marriage. The second, the much loved cat of a client who died.

The aims of HART include

• Rescuing and providing care and shelter for stray, abandoned, neglected and unwanted animals of all kinds.

• Protecting animals from cruelty and suffering.

• Helping the elderly with problems relating to their pets.

So staff at Tyndallwoods turned to Ray Dedicoat of HART for help and he immediately welcomed both animals to Hollytrees where they will have receive the care and understanding that they needed.

To thank Ray and his team Tyndallwoods are now helping with fundraising and also collecting bric-a-brac, bedding, towels and knitting wool for the charity.

Take a step back in time - With a membership to Moorpoool Crown Green Bowling Club

With the beginning of the bowling season just around the corner now is the time to start thinking about joining a nice local club.

You do not have to be an athlete to be a member of Moorpool Bowling Club, the club caters for all shapes and sizes and most people with disabilities are able to play.

During the playing season there are several social events starting with St Georges Day Strawberry Cream Tea in April.

In July there will be an evening event where you bring your own refreshment and either have a quiz or games on the green, depending on the weather.

In August there is a BBQ and quiz, in September a Fish and Chip Night with a quiz, and there will also be a Macmillans Coffee Morning in support of the Macmillans Nurses in September.

During October to end of March there is a Tuesday morning club for men and women in the Pavilion when you can come and play cribbage, dominoes, knit, sew, paint, crochet and play scrabble. On Wednesday afternoons whist is also played in the pavilion.

The club is situated in Moorpool Estate, on the corner of Park Edge

and Ravenhurst Road, behind the Fishing Pool Harborne.

The bowling green was created around the same time as the construction of the Moorpool estate which saw 500 homes built on a 54 acre site between 1907 and 1912.

The estate was an example of how affordable housing could be provided in the future, many of the original character remains, and all of the original properties remain.

The Bowling Green and Fishing Pool, (the pool is an original pool fed by underwater springs), with the presence of large trees adds to the semi-rural feel of the area and the abundance of wildlife, There is no doubt The Bowling Green and Fishing Pool are the jewel people with of the estate.

Moorpool Bowling Club has 51 full members and 10 social members.

It is a mixed club with member ages ranging from 50 to 91.

The club is looking for more members, so if you are interested all you need to do is call and arrange a visit. You do not have to wait for the open day, you can pop down on a Tuesday morning or Wednesday afternoon, you will be made very welcome. You can go along for a look round, and have a try at playing. You are under no obligation to join.
