Napster, a California-based website is sued for millions of dollars for “facilitating piracy of music” by allowing an MP3 exchange program on the website in order to download songs from the internet for free. Why?

Dan Brown, author of wildly popular book, The DaVinici Code, is accused of plagiarism. Random House is sued by two authors who claim that Brown stole their ideas. Why?

According to Alexander Lindey in his book, Plagiarism and Originality, the original word “plagiarus” is Latin for kidnapper. It is a form of cheating or passing one person’s work off as your own work.

Paraphrase, but be sure you are not just rearranging or replacing a few words. Instead, read over what you want to paraphrase carefully; cover up the text with your hand, or close the text so you can’t see any of it (and so aren’t tempted to use the text as a “guide”). Write out the idea in your own words without peeking

Check your paraphrase against the original text to be sure you have not accidentally used the same phrases or words, and that the information is accurate

Although you use your own words to paraphrase, you must still acknowledge the source of the information.

I can remember scouring the scientific journals that I came across and being fascinated by the different uses of electricity. Once article in particular that caught my attention was one entitled, “Pictures That Could Fly Through the Air” (McCutcheon 39). Imagine, being able to transport images through wires! Immediately my brain went to work on how this could be possible.
