Closing Bell: BSE Sensex opened lower on Thursday, while the Nifty traded around 9,600 points. BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 trade flat, while bonds gained slightly as data showed weaker-than-expected economic growth, while investors still bet the economy will improve. This reaction followed data late on Wednesday showing India was no longer the world’s fastest-growing major economy after posting gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 6.1% in fourth quarter from a year earlier, well below the expectations for 7.1% and China’s 6.9% annual expansion in the March quarter. Analysts expect the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to hold its policy repo rate at 6.25% on 7 June and issue a less hawkish statement than at its last meeting. The change in tone is expected given recent data showing consumer inflation (CPI) easing to 2.99% in April—well below its target of 4%—though markets are still braced for a potential surprise. “Markets expects the next quarter to be very good,” The fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) stocks rise. The Nifty FMCG index trades higher by 1.59%. The index opened at 25,857.35 points on NSE while it swung between the high and low of 26,267.90 and 25,790.60 points, respectively. The Hindustan Unilever (HUL) shares trade higher by 3.03%, Britannia shares are up by 2.13%, and Tata Global are higher by 2.01%. Stocks of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) fall on NSE. The Nifty CPSE index is down by 1.38% in Thursday’s midday trade. ONGC falls by 1.92%, Indian Oil declines by 2.74%, Power Finance Corporation (PFC) falls by 2.66%, while Rural Electrification Corp. Ltd (RECL) shares fall by 2.2%. BSE Small caps outperform the BSE mid caps, while the BSE mid caps outpace the BSE large caps. The BSE small cap index rises 0.81% to trade at 15,201.92 points. The BSE mid cap index is higher by 0.39% to trade at 14,682.53 points. The BSE large cap index trades lower by 0.14% to trade at 31,100.68 points. Pharma stocks trade higher for the third consecutive session. Aurobindo Pharma shares are up 5.1%, Divi’s Laboratories Ltd shares rise 4.6%, Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd shares rise 3.7%, Jubilant Life Sciences Ltd shares rise 4%, Ipca Laboratories Ltd shares rise 3.3%, Marksans Pharma shares rise 3%, Strides Shasun shares rise 2.7%, Cipla Ltd shares rise 2.5%, Cadia Healthcare shares rise 2.3%, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals shares rise 2.2%, and Wockhardt shares rise 2.1%. Aegis Logistics Ltd rose 2% to Rs 215 after the company said Itochu agreed to buy stake in its arm. Reliance Communications Ltd shares rose 5.3% to Rs21.05. According to NSE Block deal data, Capital Research & Management sold 18 million shares on Wednesday. ICICI Bank Ltd shares fell 0.8% to Rs323.85. BlackRock Emerging Markets Fund on Thursday picked up about 3.54 crore shares of private sector lender ICICI Bank for an estimated Rs1,155 crore through an open market transaction, according to bulk deal data available with NSE.Pfizer Ltd rose 7% to Rs1,780 after the company said it has entered into a pact with AstraZeneca AB, Sweden to acquire the Neksium brand in India for Rs75 crore to expand presence in gastrointestinal therapy

News: Bharti Infratel Ltd rose 2.4% to Rs376.70 after Bloomberg reported that

the company is sounding out banks about financing a potential offer for a majority stake in Indus Towers. The company, backed by billionaire Sunil Bharti Mittal, is exploring debt fundraising as it weighs a bid for the combined 53% stake in Indus Towers owned by Vodafone Group Plc and Idea Cellular Ltd. A deal could value their holding in closely held Indus Towers at around $8 billion.

Shares of Apollo Tyres jumped 6 per cent in Thursday’s trade on falling input costs. Reports showed the Rs 2,500 crore capex lined up by the company amid hopes of double-digit volume growth lifted investor sentiment on the counter. The scrip surged 6.5 per cent to hit a high of Rs 243.25 on Thursday on softness in rubber prices in Asia. The sharp drop in crude oil prices is already expected to lift earnings performance of tyre makers this quarter.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPI) stood net buyers in domestic equity markets for a fourth straight month in May. They poured in Rs 7,711 crore in equities and Rs 19,155 crore in the debt segment during the month gone by.

Shares of software firm Ramco Systems jumped 4 per cent in Thursday’s trade after the company said its consolidated net profit for March quarter rose to Rs 8 crore from Rs 7 crore in the same quarter last year. Following the announcement, the scrip surged 3.88 per cent to hit a high of Rs 346.75 in the morning trade on Thursday.

Snapping a three-day losing streak, shares of Orient Cement climbed nearly 3 per cent in Thursday’s trade after the company said it would acquire two entities, Bhilai Jaypee Cement and Nigrie Cement Grinding Unit, from Jaypee group firms for a total consideration of Rs 1,946 crore.

Shares of Pfizer jumped over 7 per cent in Thursday’s trade after the drugmaker said it has acquired the brand Neksium from Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca Rs 75 crore.

Oil futures rose on Thursday after slumping to a three-week low the previous session, buoyed by an industry report that showed US crude stockpiles had fallen more than expected. Brent crude futures for July delivery were up 46 cents at $51.22 a barrel, while WTI crude futures rose by 51 cents to $48.83 a barrel.

The Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar ahead of the gross domestic product data due after 5.30pm on Wednesday. The rupee closed at 64.51, up 0.24% from its Tuesday’s close of 64.67. The rupee opened at 64.53 a dollar and touched a high and a low of 64.49 and 64.58 respectively.

In overnight trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average index fell 20 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 21,008. The S&P500 index declined 1.1 points, or 0.05 per cent, to 2,411. The Nasdaq Composite index inched 4.67 points, or 0.08 per cent, lower to 6,198.

Asian stocks were mostly lower on Thursday following a subdued lead from Wall Street. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dipped 0.2 per cent and looked set for its fifth straight session of losses as investors took profits after stocks hit a two-year high last week and as economic and geopolitical concerns continued to weigh on sentiment. Japan's Nikkei advanced 0.8 per cent after data showing.
