SECTION B QUESTION 2 Read the following case study below and answer the questions that follow: 'EMPLOYER LABOUR PRACTICE' An employee at a well-known fried chicken outlet, in one of the provinces, brought a labour practice matter to their union for advice. The worker claims that she was unfairly dismissed. She was working as a cashier, on 30 March 2005, when at cash-up time, she realised that her money for the day was R50 short. She explained the situation to the supervisor and indicated that she did not know how it happened, as she was always careful with money. She had been working for this business for almost two years. Unfortunately the employer did not like grant approval for the employees to be members of the workers' union. Therefore they were not registered and did not contribute towards the unemployment insurance fund. She was dismissed without any notice, and instructed to bring back the company uniform. She was given only her salary for the month.

QUESTION 5 Read the case study and answer the questions that follow it: 5.1 Dudu Nyamane, head of Human Resources, explains Old Mutual's

relationship with its contractors. Old Mutual cares about all who work here. We value the contribution of all people who make a difference to our business, whether they be permanent employees, contractors, temps or suppliers. The idea behind Short Term Incentives (STIs) is not only to reward staff for their contribution for the preceding financial year, but also to motivate and improve performance.

There is a feeling that contractors are not happy with the issue of STI's

because it is paid to the permanent employees only, separate from their salaries but with the temps, it is covered in their pay rate as STI's. This makes the temps not to feel valued and thus want to discuss the issue with the manager or the labour broker who hired them.
