    Cat Costume

    Size:

    These are generic instructions that

can be used to make ears and tail forany size person, however, I don't

    recommend making this costume for

children under 3 years of age.

    Materials:

Amounts will vary depending on the

size you make. Below are the

amounts I used to make the ears and

tail for my 6 year old daughter in the

    picture.

    Ears:Approximately 45m (50 yards) of

black yarn, DK or worsted weight.

    1 pair 6mm knitting needles

    Handful of polyester toy filling

    Tail:

    Scraps (approximately 15gms each)

of white, orange, and black yarn, DK

    or worsted weight.

    1 set 5mm dpns

    1 pr 6mm knitting needles

    Method

    Ears

    Yarn is used double throughout

    Band (make 1):

Using 6mm needles and black, cast

on 10sts and knit every row until

    work measures 30cm/12 inches. Cast

    off.

    Ears (Make 4):

Cast on 14 sts and knit 6 rows garter

    st.

Decrease 1 st at each end of every

    alternate rows until 2sts remain,

    K2tog, fasten off.

    Making Up:

    Sew ear pieces together, leaving

    bottom opening for stuffing.

    Stuff lightly, then sew bottom

opening closed.Sew a line down the middle of each

as shown in the diagram below. This

will give the ears added definition.

Fold the band in half and mark the

middle with a piece of coloured

    thread. Sew your ears approximately

2cm (4/5 inch) either side of thecentre line.

Sew ribbon or a twisted cord to the

ends of the band so that it can be tiedon.

    Tail:

This tail is simply two knitted pieces

sewn together in a "T" shape. One istied around the waist and the other

    hangs down as the tail.

First you will need to determine the

measurements of your pieces.Measure the recipient around the

waist and add 30cm/ 12 inches. This

is the measurement of the piece that

    ties around the waist.

Next, measure from the waist to the

    floor and subtract30cm/ 12 inches.

This is the measurement for the tail

    piece.

    Waist Piece:

Using 6mm needles and yarn double

cast on 12 sts and knit every row until

work measures the same as yourwaist measurement. Cast off.

    Tail Piece:

Using yarn singly 5mm dpns cast on

    2/24

16sts and knit in the round, working

random stripes, until it measures the

same as your tail measurement. Break

yarn, thread through sts, pull tight, and fasten off.

    Making Up:

Fold your waist piece in half and sew

the cast on end of the tail piece to this

point.Sew in all loose ends neatly.

    4/24

    Materials Needed:

1 Skein of "Bernat Baby Boucle" Yarn in color for lambs wool. (white) 1 Skein of any standard 4 ply yarn in the color for lamb face and

hooves. (eggshell) Light pink yarn for nose US #10 Knitting Needles Black Doll eyes Yarn Needle Polyfil Stuffing or your favorite doll stuffing.

Finished Size: Approx. 11" tall, 12" long, 6" wide

Note: This project requires that you already know how to cast on, knit, purl, increase stitches, change colors, and bind off.

    Assemble your Lamb:

See additional pictures for placement help. Stitch all parts on with "Bernat Boucle" yarn exceptfor the ears, which should be stitched on with face color yarn.

    1. Find the seam on the lambs body. Theseam will be the belly of the lamb. The endof the body that you finished stuffing andstitching up will be the tail end of the

lamb. Find that end and lay the lamb bellyside up.

    2. With Boucle yarn, stitch 2 of your finishedlegs on either side of the belly seam withthe leg seam edges pointed in toward thebelly and the legs lined up with the end ofthe body.

    3. Turn the body around and stitch the other2 finished legs on either side of the bellyseam with the leg seam edges pointed intoward the belly and the legs positioned inch to 1 inch from the end of the body.

    4. Stitch the wide end of the tail onto the tail end of the lamb body.5. Place the lambs head in position as you would like and begin stitching it to

the body. For a less floppy head, stitch a wide circle of the head to the body6. Stitch the wide end of the ear to the lambs head tightly. You may want to

curve the edge slightly while stitching them on to give the ears a more natucurved look.

    7. Use some pink yarn to stitch a small noseonto your lamb.

KNITTED BABY SOCKMaterials:For this size (toddler 4-1/2" from heel totoe), I used baby weight yarn; 1 skein(1.75 ozs.) made 2 pairs; size 4 straight

    knitting needles.

    Cast on 41 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbingfor 30 rows.

Start heel: Knit 11 sts, turn, work instockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 16row, ending with a p row, turn.

    2-Needle Socks (continued) . . .

Using left needle, pick up 10 sts alongside of heel (the trick to making this heellook good, is to pick up these sts alongside evenly spaced & knit them verytight), knit them, then continue across 19center (instep) sts. Work stockinette st

on remaining 11 sts for 17 rows, endingwith a knit row. Work this half of heel asfollows:

    Next row: P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn, sl 1, k 3,turn.Next row: Knit.Next row: P 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn, sl 1, k 4,turn.Next row: Knit.Next row: P 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn, sl 1, k 5,turn.

    Next row: Knit.Next row: P 5, p 2 tog, p 1 - 7 sts onneedle.

Using left needle, pick up 10 sts alongside of heel (the trick to making this heellook good, is to pick up these sts alongside evenly spaced & purl them verytight), purl them, then continue purlingacross all sts.

    Next row: K 15, k 2 tog, k 19, sl 1, k 1,pass sl st over (psso), k 15.Next row: Purl.Next row: K 14, k 2 tog, k 19, sl 1, k 1,psso, k 14.Next row: Purl.Next row: K 13, k 2 tog, k 19, sl 1, k 1,psso, k 13.

    Next row: Purl.Next row: K 12, k 2 tog, k 19, sl 1, k 1,psso, k 12.Next row: Purl.Next row: K 11, k 2 tog, k 19, sl 1, k 1,psso, k 11.Next row: Purl.

    Next row: K 10, k 2 tog, k 19, sl 1, k 1,psso, k 10.Next row: Purl: 41 sts on needle.

    2-Needle Socks (continued) . . .

Work even in stockinette st for 10 rows

(or 2 inches shorter than desired footlength - from heel to toe) ending with apurl row.

    Toe Shaping:

    Next row: K 8, k 2 tog, k 2, sl 1, k 1, psso,k 13, k 2 tog, k 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 8.Next row: Purl.Next row: K 7, k 2 tog, k 2, sl 1, k 1, psso,k 11, k 2 tog, k 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 7.

    6/24

Next row: Purl.Next row: K 6, k 2 tog, k 2, sl 1, k 1, psso,k 9, k 2 tog, k 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 6.Continue decreasing in same way, until17 sts remain. Leaving sts on needle, cutyarn leaving short tail, then use a crochethook to pull tail through rem sts &remove needle. Pull sts tightly, then pulltail through opposite beginning st andsecure. I did it this way, so the toedoesn't have any bumps or uneven edge.

The trick to having a flat seam:Using an iron, press edges flat, as knittededges always have a tendency to curlunder. Then I used a matching needle &

thread to sew seam together, makingsure that I just caught 1 strand of yarnfrom each edge, and not pullingextremely tight. This will keep your edgesmooth & flat.

Using same needle & thread, sew anyloose yarn ends in place, fold top of sock

over, and you have a darling pair ofsockies for a little one!

This pattern also works great for largersocks. You can make the ribbing longer, foot length longer, use a heavier yarn, larger needle, etc.

    Newborn Adjustable Hat

    (A"grow with me " hat!)

(When other hats are justtoo big, this one fits justright! )

Note: You can weave thetie into any of the eyeletrows to adjust to fit thehead.

    Materials: Worsted weightyarn, about 1 ounce, orabout 50 yards.1 - 16 inch circular needle,size 8, plus a crochet hooksize G or H for tie.

    Gauge: 9 sts = 2 inches m5 rows = 1 inch

Directions: With circularneedle, cast on 50 sts.Place a marker to indicatebeg of rnd.Knit around until about 3 inches from beg. (let thebottom curl up as it wants

    to).Start eyelet row pattern:Slip marker, start at beg ofround: *K 3, YO, K 2 tog*repeating between *'saround. K around for next 5rounds.

  • 8/3/2019 Needle Craft (Early Adulthood)

    7/24

Repeat these 6 rounds 3more times, for a total of 4eyelet rounds. K 2 more rounds, thenbind off in knit st.

    Fasten off, weave in yarnends.

Tie: With crochet hook, make a chain about 19inches long. Fasten off.Weave tie in and out of anyof the eyelet hole rows.Pull to gather in, and tie ina bow.

*This makes a quick to knit, last minute gift for a newbaby! Make several indifferent colors!

    * If desired, weave ribbonlengths in and out aroundremaining eyelet holes fora decorative look.

    Barbie's Rainbow Ball Gown

    Materials:

    Double-pointed needles, US size 1.

One ball fingering weight (baby or sock) yarn. I

used Fortissima Cotton Colori in bright colors. A

plain color would show the bows better. Sparkly

yarn is always nice. I think smooth yarn is better

    for this than fuzzy yarn.

    Hem:

Cast on 80 stitches and join into a circle withouttwisting the stitches.

Knit 5 rounds plain. Purl one round. Next 5 rounds:

    K 26, p 11, k to end of round.

Fold the hem up along the purl line and knit the

cast-on edge into the next round this way: for each

stitch of the round, pick up the cast-on loop directly

below it with the tip of the left needle and knit it

together with the stitch. Be very careful to get thestitch which is directly below, or the hem will be

twisted. (Purl the purl stitches.)Knit two more rounds as established, knitting the

knit stitches and purling the purl stitches.

    Make a bow:

Round 1: Knit until you reach the purl stitches. Slip

the purl stitches with the yarn in front of the work.

Smooth the stitches out on the right needle to makesure the floating yarn is not too tight or loose. It

shouldn't pull in or droop. Knit the rest of the

    round.

Round 2: Knit the knits and purl the purls.

Repeat these two rounds four times more. On the

last round, when you come to the center stitch ofthe purl stitches, gather up the bow by reaching below the stranded yarns with the tip of the

right needle to purl the center stitch. Pull the stitch down behind the strands and back up infront of them. Continue to finish the round.

    Decrease round:

Decrease by knitting 2 sts together in 8 places spaced evenly around the skirt. On the side

where the purl stitches are, make the two decreases at the edge of the purls, reducing the

number of purl stitches by two (slip, slip, knit together at the first edge, and k 2 together at

will be 9 stitches, 7 stitches, and 5 stitches wide. (48 stitches remain).

Work in *p1 k1* rib for about an inch.

    Bodice:

Knit plain, making a 9-stitch bow centered above the bows in the skirt.

Knit 5 more plain rounds. Optional back shaping (makes the back lower and firmer): for the

back half of the bodice, alternate a round of *k1, slip 1 with yarn in back* and a round of

*slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*.

Use Kitchener Stitch to weave top of mitten after removing waste yarn

Sew side seam using a nice neat mattress stitch.

Turn mittens inside out and sew pocket sides and bottom, using yarn tails

and "skimming" the mitten stitches. (These sts shouldn't show on the outside)You may want to use your safety pins to position the pocket from the right

side before sewing so as not to skew the opening.

    Optional Mitten Stringer:

Leaving 3" tail, chain 2" length of main yarn, finish off and leave 3" tail.

Using a yarn tail, firmly attach lanyard clip to one end of the chain, passingrepeatedly through the clip and the last chain st.

Weave the remainder of this tail down through the chain for strength.

Using the other yarn tail, sew the lanyard chain firmly inside one of the

mittens , next to the stringer hole made in Row 50. Pass this tail repeatedly

through the end of the chain and the inside of the mitten. Tie the tailstogether and hide the ends. Strength is the key here!

To use: Pass the lanyard tail out through its hole, then pass it in through the

hole of the other mitten and out the top. Now firmly attached to each other, use the clip to attach the mittens to a zipper pull, backpack loop, etc. Keep

the lanyard inside the mitten so it won't hook on things.
