The mission of the College of Engineering is to produce engineering and computer science grad-uates skilled in applying systems and diverse perspectives and prepared to lead in the creation of innovative and collaborative solutions for the complex global challenges of society.

College of Engineering faculty re-searchers attracted over $15 million in total annual research dol-lars during the 2012-2013 academic year. The college ranks No. 2 in an-nual research dollars among the four North Carolina public engineering schools.

The College of Engineering has con-sistently ranked No. 1 in the nation for the number of degrees awarded to African Americans at the under-graduate level for 13 consecutive years and has been the leading pro-ducer of African American female engineers at the baccalaureate level in the U.S. for at least eight consecu-tive years. -

In its sixth year, the National Science Foundation’s Engi-neering Research Center for Revolutionizing Metallic Bio-materials, directed by mechan-ical engineering professor Dr. Jag Sankar, conducts collabo-rative research in the areas of biomedical engineering and nano-bio applications in part-nership with an international collaboration of universities. The ERC-RMB, with industrial board member company Nano-MAG Thixomat, was recently awarded a two year SECO grant of $200,000, one of only five funded by the National Science Foundation in this cycle. The ERC-RMB’s technical role will be to evaluate biocompatibili-ty and bioresorption rates for nanoMAG’s proprietary magne-sium alloys in a vivo orthopedic model.

N.C. A&T’s Center for Advanced Studies in Identity Sciences (CASIS) in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon, Clemson and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, is the first and only National Intelli-gence Science and Technology Cen-ter of Academic Excellence in the United States. Under the leadership of Dr. Gerry Dozier, CASIS director and chair of computer science, the center received a five-year, $8.93 million in grant funding from the Army Research Laboratory, which led to its establishment. A&T is the lead university in the center.

In April 2013, the College of En-gineering established a new joint partnership with Guilford Tech Community College (GTCC). The new co-admission agreement is one of a series of proactive actions the college is taking toward workforce development, while also making it easier for community college grad-uates to continue their education within the college.

Dr. Narayan Bhattari, assistant professor of bio engineering and Princeton Carter, gradu-ate student in the Chemical, Biological and Bio Engineering department co-authored a text book chapter, “Bioscaffolds: Fabrication and Performance,” which appears in “Engineered Biomimicry” (Elsevier Publica-tion, 2013).

N.C. A&T’s Bio-adhesive Alliance team and developer of “PiGrid” is the grand prize winner of the 2013 MegaWatt Ventures Competition and recipient of $100,000. The team led by Dr. Elham Fini, assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, and graduate student Daniel Oldham won the ACC Clean Energy Challenge and placed first in the U.S. Department of Energy National Clean Energy Business Plan Competition representing the Southeastern U.S.

The College of Engineering under-stands the importance of nurturing a global perspective in our students. In 2013, student international travel and work experiences spanned several countries including Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Tanzania, and others.

College of Engineering Points of Pride and Quick Facts

Dr. Stephanie Luster-Teasley, associate professor with a joint appointment in the departments of Civil, Architectural and Environ-mental Engineering and Chemical, Biological and Bio Engineering was awarded the 2013 Excellence in Teaching Award by the UNC Board of Governors.

In August 2013, Teasley was also awarded United States Patent No. 8,519,061 for her development of a controlled release chemical oxida-tion polymer system for the remedi-ation of wastewater. She is the first female African American faculty member to be named inventor on a patent issued to N.C. A&T.

Computer science professor, Dr. Justin Zhan, received the Best Paper Award by IEEE International Conference on Big Data September 2013. The paper is titled “The Data Bridge: Sociometric Methods for Long-Tail Scientific Data.”

Emmanuel Johnson who received a B.S. in computer engineering in May 2013, was N.C. A&T’s first student to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. Johnson is pursuing a one-year mas-ter’s in robotics at the University of Birmingham in England.

Architectural engineering major Tiffany Williams was the first student in the nation to receive the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ (ASHRAE) 2013-2014 Lynn G. Bellenger Scholarship.

The N.C. A&T student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) competed in the American Society of Civil Engineers Carolina’s conference and won five awards: first-place awards in the geotechni-cal engineering and surveying com-petitions, second place in environ-mental engineering and third place in the mead paper and concrete canoe competitions.

N.C. A&T’s Society of Automotive Engineers Collegiate Design Series teams (Baja SAE, Formula SAE, and SAE Aero) competed and won in all categories at the annual SAE Caroli-nas’ Collegiate Design Presentation Competition in February. The Baja SAE, Formula SAE and SAE Aero teams won in each of their respective categories.

Chemical engineering professor Dr. Yusuf Adewuyi was elected a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Fellowship in AIChE represents the highest grade of membership in the organization.
