On May 20, 2007, The Elise Wiesel Foundation honored Oprah Winfrey with its Humanitarian Award. The award was for people who were outstanding individuals, who use there time to fight indifference.

Oprah was one of the many people to get this award.

In 2003 Oprah became the first African American to reach a

billionaire status. She has been an influence in the world for a long

time.

Oprah's Childhood

• Oprah was born January 29th 1954.

• Her full name was Oprah Gail Winfrey.

• She grew up with three other siblings, Patricia Lloyd, Patricia Lee, and Jeffery Lee.

• Oprah was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi.

Oprah's Education • When Oprah was younger then three, she was a

great reader and writer.

• Her grandma decided to enroll her in school at a very young age.

Education• During the last year of high-school, Oprah was

rehearsing with her drama class when a local radio station, WVOL spotted her and asked her if she would like to read on radio. Oprah was then given a job reading the news on the radio. Oprah soon entered into a public speaking contest where the grand prize was a scholarship to Tennessee State University. Starting her Career

• During her college education, Oprah was offered a job as a co-anchor on the CBS television station, she declined several times before she was convinced by her speech professor that it may be the ultimate step to launch her career.

• In 1981, Oprah sent recorded tapes of the show to a talk-show in Chicago called A.M. Chicago. They immediately offered her the job and in September of 1985, she changed the name of the show to, "The Oprah Winfrey Show". The first broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show was on September,8,1986 it broadcasted nationally

Oprah's Compassion

• As Oprah’s wealth and influence have grown, so has her compassion. In 2000, Oprah's Angel Network began presenting a $100,000 "Use Your Life Award" to people who helped improve the lives of others. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Oprah has donated more than $50 million to charity, including 50 local organizations such as the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Children's Memorial Hospital and the Chicago Academy of the Arts. After selling off some of her clothes, Oprah donated a box full of money—including a $1 million check—to Chicago’s Providence St. Mel School.

• The foundation helped people with the inspiration, empowerment, education and well-being of women, children and families around the world.

• Oprah has contributed millions of dollars towards providing a better education for underserved students.

Why I picked Oprah I picked Oprah because I think she is a great influence for

anyone. She shows how anyone can make a difference in the world. She went from not really having everything to a

millionaire. I think it is amazing how she is helping people because she knows how it feels because it was her at one

point.
