From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, This Friday, our parish school will graduate the Class of 2016 at a Liturgy and Commencement Ceremony. On behalf of all parishioners I extend our prayerful good wishes to these students many of whom have been “with us” for the past nine years…perhaps even longer for those who attended our Preschool. I should like to think that our school, with its dedicated faculty, has provided a firm spiritual and academic foundation so necessary for high school and beyond. Graduation provides the occasion to offer our thanks to all involved in keeping the mission of our parish school strong—administrators, faculty, staff, our School Board, and Parent-Teacher Association. In many ways we are looking to keep our spiritual and academic program excellent, our campus attractive, and our financial stewardship sound. I am grateful for the consistent support of all parishioners whose sacrifices weekly help us to achieve these aims. The greatest challenge we face is the need to increase our enrollment, which this year stood at 235 (K-8). Would that all parishioners be strong advocates and “advertisers” for our school! Remember our newest alumni in your prayers this week.

Our Lady of Sorrows, show thyself a Mother

and welcome under your mantle the Class of 2016

Teach them to believe as you believed. Illumine their path and make their road of life

secure and joyful. With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

On May 11, 1991, at our Cathedral, Jeffery Pierfy and Dennis Slavin were ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon at the hands of Bishop John C. Reiss. Ordained with them was also our parishioner Jack D'Agostino, of happy memory, who served our parish with particular devotion. Let us unite ourselves to the joy and thanksgiving of this silver anniversary of faithful service to the Diocese and our parish. Let us pray for and thank our Deacons on this significant milestone!

Refreshments to follow in the Church Hall

Answering Atheism The Reading Group has a new book: Answering Atheism. Have you ever met someone who did not believe in God? Did you have trouble explaining your faith to them or did you feel too intimidated to even try? In our bi-weekly Reading Group, we will be reading just the book for you. Answering Atheism, by

Trent Horn, presents a new charitable and reasonable approach to the questions atheists sometimes have about the faith. In the Reading Group, we will be reading this work every other week starting on June 23 at 7 p.m. in the OLS Church Library. If this book is of interest to you and you want more details, feel free to contact Fr. Carter at the parish office or his email [email protected]. We always love more people to join us in our discussions.

Congratulations! Kudos to Matthew Peluso, of Boy Scout Troop 91, who is being recognized at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor this Sunday for having earned Scouting's highest rank. Eagle Scouts exemplify the virtues of service, leadership, and duty to God, using their training and influence to better their communities and the world.

Examples of h o u s e w a r e s needed include: dishes, pots & pans, silverware, drinking glasses, kitchen gadgets & utensils, sheets, blankets, bedspreads, curtains, and small appliances (in excellent working condition). Please note that Catholic Charities cannot accept any large furniture items. If you would like to make a monetary donation, make the check payable to OLS-SA, write Catholic Charities on the notation line, and put it in an envelope clearly marked Catholic Charities. News From Your Parish School Get in the Game

There is still time for plenty of excitement at Our Lady of Sorrows School! Full school assembly programs are such a special time for the students and faculty alike! Last week, together with the support of our very active Sports Committee, we were happy to welcome Joe "The Trick Star" Odihiambo to our school. This was no ordinary assembly. Joe was an NBA All-Star Performer for 2006, 07, 08, 09 and 10! Joe Odihiambo is a 12-time Guiness Book of World Records World Record Holder! He shared his skills of dribbling, balancing the greatest number of basketballs, and ball handling for the longest amount

of time! It's never really a fun assembly until the children "get in the game," and this surely was part of the action! John Merluse (Grade 4) and Julio Juarez (Grade 8) took on Joe in dribbling half court. Truly, both of these very able players gave Joe a "run for his money". John competed in his walking cast, and still stayed "in the game"! In

the words of Joe at the culmination of the program, "I know two players that I will surely be seeing more of in the world of basketball!" This says so very much for our sports program as well as the well-rounded education our children receive at OLS. (Here is a little secret that will soon be announced: Julio will be awarded the distinction of "Best Handwriting Skills for a Grade 8 Student in the entire state of New Jersey")! Joe shared that everyone can succeed with 5 attributes: Faith in Yourself, Persistence, Patience, Hard Work, and Responsibility. Together with our faith in God, these are the very foundation of the program at OLS. Joe closed his assembly program with a moving quote from the Bible and reminded everyone that only through our faith and the support of God can we find success and happiness. We thank the Sports Committee for their support. You may want to consider a donation for a special program for the students at your parish school. Gathering events bring so very much depth and bonding to the school experience. Most of all, our students gain valuable life-lessons that contribute to a better world for everyone.

Rosary Altar Society News The Prayer Shawl Group will meet at 1:30 p.m. on June 13 in the Church Meeting Room at the OLS Campus. Prayer shawls are made for patients in area hospitals, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. If you or anyone you know is interested in making prayer shawls, or if you wish to donate yarn, please contact Joyce Farina at 888-0437.

The office will close at 12:30 p.m. on Fridays from now through September 2. Office hours on Monday through Thursday and on Saturday will remain the same.

Thursdays Are Days Of Solemn Adoration The Blessed Sacrament will be placed upon the altar following the 7 a.m. Mass until Reposition at 6 p.m. All are invited to answer the Lord’s call…He wants us give Him the gift of our time. He wants us to come to Him bringing our needs, anxieties, joys, and thanks. Our Lady of Sorrows Church also is open during our office hours. Why not stop for even a brief moment to rejoice in the Lord’s Presence?

Saturday, June 25 The Loaves and Fishes Community of the Diocese of Trenton serves meals on the last two Saturdays of every month all year long at St. Mary's Cathedral in Trenton. Our Lady of Sorrows - St. Anthony will host the meal on Saturday, June 25. We will be serving dinner for more than 600 guests. OLS School PTA will provide the supplies for bagged lunches, which we will be assembling on Friday, June 24, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Volunteers are needed for this event.

We REALLY need volunteers to serve at the Cathedral on Saturday! Can you spare just a few hours out of one day to serve Jesus?

There are several ways you can help. You can work “behind the scenes” in the kitchen or serve the guests directly, and several time slots are available: 10 helpers to serve bagels and coffee at St. Mary’s from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. 10 helpers to prepare the meal and work in the kitchen from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 30 helpers to serve the dinner guests from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 5 helpers to serve at the second station in the cafeteria from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 6 helpers to prep the dessert from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 10 helpers to clean the kitchen from noon to 1:30 p.m. 10 helpers to clean the cafeteria and fold the tables from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Does your child need service hours? This is a great way to earn them!

Is transportation an issue for you? Car pooling for adults is available.

To volunteer or to arrange transportation, contact

Cheryl Uhaze (588-0890 or [email protected]).
