As Grand Designs Live Birmingham, sponsored by npower

juice closed its doors on the 10th October, organisers of the

show, Media 10, hailed it a fantastic success with 47,283 (pre

ABC-audited figure) attending the event, increasing by 11%

from last year’s ABC audited figure of 42,578.

Based on the hugely popular TV show hosted by Kevin

McCloud, the fifth annual Grand Designs Live Birmingham

ran from the 8th - 10th October at the NEC, and was opened

by Kevin in front of thousands of visitors eagerly waiting to

explore new innovations and the latest developments in

home improvements.

With the latest news stating the biggest monthly fall in house

prices since records began, and fewer people buying houses,

consumers attending Grand Designs Live were confident

about their homes. Visitors were seeking for solutions to add space and value to

their homes as well as refurbishment solutions and cost-effective energy efficient

products to save money in the long term.

The exhibition showcased over 500 companies, including heavyweight brands such

as npower juice, Miele, Porcelanosa VELUX, IKEA Kitchens (with this being their very

first Grand Designs Live event), Dulux,

LG, Microsoft, Dyson, as well as

independent designers, local business-

es, small manufacturers and new

products launches. In addition to this,

Automotive Sponsor BMW had a

great response to their new BMW

X3, which was previewed at the

show and will be launched in the

UK in November this year.

Consumers were keen to find out about innovative

products, receive free expert advice, find out about

developments in the sustainable home movement and listen

to seminars hosted by celebrities including Kevin McCloud,

George Clarke, Oliver Heath and Naomi Cleaver.

Exhibitors and show sponsors were very impressed with the

visitor attendance, the quality of the event and their sales.

nesses that have a strong online presence likely to report almost four times more growth than those

that don't.

The report says that 250,000 people are employed by e-commerce companies in the UK, and Britain

ranks sixth among the world's major economies in terms of an 'e-intensity index' - a measure of the

reach and depth of the internet. That put the country above the likes of Germany, the US and France,

but lagging behind Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands and Denmark.

73% of UK households have an internet connection and 62% of all adults - 31 million - bought goods

or services online in the past year.

"The internet is pervasive in the UK economy today, more so than in most advanced countries," said

Paul Zwillenberg, partner with BCG in London.

Q. “As a small employer do I have to have employment contracts in place?

A. A contract is “that which was agreed” – an offer and an acceptance. It does not have to be in writing to be a contract, however every employer is required to producea Statement of Terms and Conditions of Employment foreach employee, and this is often referred to as the contract.

Q. What information has to be included?

A. There is a requirement to include certain basic detail, suchas hours of work, rate and frequency of pay, holiday entitlement, etc. The Employment Rights Act 1996 (ERA)sets out the detail.

Q. What are the consequences of not having a statement of Terms and Conditions?

A. Well if your employees are not clear about the details oftheir employment it can lead to misunderstandings on bothsides and ultimately may cause a problem serious enoughfor the employee to make a claim to the Employment Tribunal (ET). If the terms are clearly set out then everyoneunderstands and there is unlikely to be any future dispute.If a claim for a different issue were made to the ET andthe employee had not been provided with this Statementthe Tribunal is bound to make an award against the employer equal to two or four weeks pay, according to thecircumstances.

Q. Is there a time limit by when this statement should be issued?

A. Yes, the employee is entitled to receive it within 8 weeksof starting the employment, however it does not have tobe issued during the first four weeks, although most employers issue it as part of an induction programme. TIP:Always prepare two copies and ask the employee to signboth so that a signed copy is retained to show it has beenissued.
