Core Remit The teaching of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to

current LSE students to support their other academic studies. The provision of Degree Options in Literature, Mandarin,

French, German, Russian, Spanish Language and Society as well as Linguistics for Social Scientists.

The support of staff development through providing both EAP teaching to part-time teaching staff and foreign language teaching to academic staff.

The support of research students who require foreign language teaching for their research work.

More general support in the form of advice on language teaching needs to staff and current students.

The provision of an Institution Wide Language Programme of certificated short courses in a wide range of modern languages.

English for Academic Purposes

Through the modules LN961-LN999 we provide EAP insessional support for around 800 LSE students per academic year.

Over 1100 hours of classes run during an academic year.

Departments are divided into ‘Academic Clusters’ and have a designated EAP Tutor.

In the Summer Term EAP examination skills classes are also provided.

Academic English classes for LSE100. English for Thesis Purposes for PhD students.

Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and French. Language and Society 2 (Intermediate)

Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and French. Leads to Language and Society 1 after one year.

Language and Society 3 (Advanced)Mandarin, Russian, German, Spanish and French. European Framework B2 Vantage level.

Language and Society 4 (Proficiency)Mandarin, Russian, German, Spanish and French. European Framework C1 Effectiveness level.

Non Core Remit

To develop EAP programmes to provide an income stream for LSE. To develop EFL programmes to provide an income stream for LSE. To develop MFL programmes to provide an income stream for LSE. To develop opportunities for the provision of MFL tailored programmes

to provide an income stream for LSE. Expand existing programmes on LSE International Summer School. Work with LSE student recruitment to develop new markets. To be actively involved with ‘widening participation at LSE’.

EAP Foundation Programme

‘Potential’ recruitment tool for LSE. Specific to the social sciences. First offered in 1999.

EAP Presessional Programme

Standard and Short courses: August-September each year. Specific to the social sciences, and prioritised for LSE students. Reworked since 1999 when 128 students attended the equivalent of

LN906 (a two week course). In 2000 61 students attended the equivalent of LN906 with further 40

attending a 4 week course. From 2011 LN904 closed and LN905 and LN906 expanded. LN909 offered from 2013 for Fudan students visiting LSE

Additional Income Generation

1-2-1 and private group tuition is available.

Managing tailored courses for individuals and companies (e.g. UEFA, Trade Partners UK, FCO ).

Business English and Presessional programmes as part of the LSE Summer School.

Summer Language Programme commenced in 2011.

Profit Generated Core services funded centrally. Non-core services through income generation. Certificate Courses continue to be run at cost to LSE Community. Forecasts for core services agreed annually with the Finance Division. Forecast and targets for non-core services agreed annually with the

Finance Division.
