Report Prepared for: Brad Smith

Prindle Lake Association 54 Prindle Hill Road Charlton, MA 01507 [email protected]

In accordance with the existing aquatic plant management contract between SŌLitude Lake Management (SLM) and the Prindle Lake Association for Prindle Lake in Charlton, MA, the following document serves to provide this year’s treatment and survey results and the management recommendations for the next season. All management activities were consistent with the Order of Conditions (DEP# 128-770), and the License to Apply Chemicals issued by the MA DEP – Office of Watershed Management (# 16263). 2016 Management Program Summary:

Submitted Permit Application to MADEP ............................................. 06/22/2016 Received approved License to Apply Chemicals ................................... 06/24/2016 Pre-Treatment Survey ........................................................................... 06/22/2016 Initial Treatment ................................................................................... 06/27/2016 Post-Treatment Survey ......................................................................... 09/16/2016

Early Season Survey The early season survey was conducted on June 22nd by personnel of SLM. This survey was conducted with Brad Smith, Prindle Lake Association President, to ensure that all areas of growth were noted. The results of this survey include moderate to dense amounts of Myriophyllum heterophyllum (Variable watermilfoil), trace amounts of Utricularia sp. (native bladderwort), trace amounts of Callitriche sp. (starwort), trace amounts of Potamogeton pusillus (thinleaf pondweed), and trace amounts of Chara sp. (Muskgrass). Herbicide Treatment The herbicide treatment to control the Variable Milfoil was conducted on June 27th. A mixture of water and Reward (diquat dibromide), a contact herbicide, was applied through submersed hoses trailing behind a Jon boat. Prior to treatment, notifications were provided to the Prindle Lake association, as well as the Charlton Conservation Commission. In conjunction with the notifications, posters displaying water use restrictions and usage risks were posted along the perimeter of the lake in areas that are visible to the public.

Post-Treatment Inspection The post-treatment survey was conducted on September 16th. The purpose of this survey was to determine the efficacy of the herbicide treatment conducted in June and to note any remaining growth, re-growth of the target species. Results of this survey indicated an overall successful herbicide treatment. The total distribution and densities of Variable Milfoil within the treatment areas were significantly reduced. There was some evidence of milfoil regrowth with relatively low biomass within some of the treatment areas. Since Reward® is a contact herbicide, it only affects the upper portion of the plant, and does not effect the root structure. This can often result in re-growth of the target species, depending on water and weather conditions Ongoing Management Recommendations Result of the pre-and post-management surveys suggest that the 2016 treatment program effectively reduced the target species. Given the history of this species and this waterbody, it is likely that ongoing management will continue to be required. Therefore, SLM recommends continuing with a similar management plan for the 2017 season – both monitoring and treatments. It is also important, as in the 2016 season, future treatments be commenced early in the growing season. Applying the herbicides when the vegetation biomass is low, will prevent the species from growing in distribution through fragmentation, as well as preventing any hindrance on recreational activities in the lake. Moving forward, the Prindle Lake Association should consider management options for the floating-leaf species within the lake. The Watershield and Water-lilies are spreading in distribution across the lake. These species, while native, can grow to nuisance levels, which can hinder water use and recreational activities of the lake. These species have been successfully managed utilizing a foliar spray with a glyphosate based systemic herbicide.
