Microsoft’s Tag works much the

same way as a QR Code, but

Microsoft’s proprietary software

is necessary to create and decode

the tags



• Provide point-of-use instruction at point-of-need locations.

• Link to book trailers or read-alikes right from the book itself.

• Post QR codes by study rooms. Students would be able to check the availability of a study room, and then book it from their mobile device.

• QR codes in the stacks could bring up a list of pathfinders on topics related to books in the call number range area.

• QR codes in the stacks could show where the ebooks would be on the shelves.

• QR codes in catalog systems to allow patrons to snap and save books of interest.


• Direct users to a service that’s specifically aimed at mobile device users, such as a chat, text or IM reference service, or the mobile version of the library’s catalog or databases.

• QR code to the online Ask a Librarian site could be posted at the physical reference desk and at all public access computer workstations.

• Library tours – QR codes can be placed in different areas of the library so visitors can access information relevant to that particular space. Audio tours can also be provided this way.

• Library or school maps – Instead of just a map that has locations on it, put QR codes for every area that has a web page, so that readers can go directly to that web page for more information.


• Link to a Phone number on a web page so students don’t have to dial the number on their phone.

• Link to a web page associated with an event by placing a QR code for the web page on the event's poster.

• QR Codes can be posted at desks to advertise services like laptop checkout, account access, and online resources.

• Librarians can tag pre-formatted, tailored searches for events and exhibits.

• Add QR codes to posters, flyers, and other library instructional or promotional materials.

• Link to audio books or electronic books to allow patrons instant access anywhere.

Contra Costa Country Library (CA) partnered with the local public transit authority to mount promotional posters in all vehicles. Patrons simply snap the code and are ready to listen to one of more than 600 audiobooks in the library’s collection. CCCL also provides QR Code access to their Text-a-Librarian service, their read-alike database and more.


o Not all students are aware of QR codes

o Not all students will have the required devices and software

o Information still needs to be provided in a conventional way

o Effective pedagogical uses of QR codes?
