Papua is the largest and eastern most

province in Indonesia. The province,

covering a land area of 309.934

km2, is predominantly dense forest

and mountainous terrain.

It takes around 5-6 hours to reach

Sentani from Jakarta by direct flight.

Upon arrival in Sentani, we board on

the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF)

planes to reach interior Papua. There

are thousands of villages in Papua’s

mountaneous region, many untouched

and are not interconnected with

nearby villages. The MAF serve 200 of

these villages.

Although Indonesia has been

independent for more than

65 years, there are many

places untouched by national

development. Most school-

aged children in Papua’s interior

villages have never had access

to a formal education. And,

although the local government

has built schools in the region,

the teachers who are assigned to

these schools do not fulfill their

duties and do not physically come

to the schools to teach.

H O W D O W E H E L P ? YPHPapua is eager to build hope and spread the light

of the Gospel in Mamit through:

Our goal every year is to raise enough funds to build two schools in Papua’s

mountaneous areas. It will be the first form of formal education to many Papuan

children and opening their world to endless possibilities.

Rp. 200,000,000 (USD 15,000) builds a classroom.

In some of the remote villages where there are

government school, 90% of the teachers only show up

1 to 2 months out of the whole year to administer the

national test. Most teachers giving out answer sheets in

order for the students to receive certificates.

Many papuan student graduate, but have no actual

knowledge.

Today, many papuan only know

numbers 1, 2 & 3 and speak only

tribal languages. They are still

living in a primitive environment.

Our Vision

To bless the nation through total

transformational education based

on True Knowledge, Faith in

Christ, Godly Character.

Our Mission

Proclaiming the preeminence

of Christ and engaging in the

redemptive restoration of all

things in Him through holistic

education.

In 2013, God called 3 teachers to start

Sekolah Lentera Harapan in Mamit and

after 3 years it had 116 students. This

year, the foundation is targeting 60

additional students from Kindergarten

through Grade 1. Teachers in this

location will become a locomotive

to push the students to learn, grow,

develop and deepen their knowledge

of Jesus Christ. These teachers will not

only act as teachers, they will also be

spiritual mentors and care takers when

students are sick.

I N D A B O T O

By the grace of our Lord and Savior

Jesus Christ, YPH Papua will open

Sekolah Lentera Harapan in the village

of Daboto.  The school will start in

July 2016 with 3 classrooms and

approximately 45 students.   It will

be the first form of formal education

to all these children.  Today they only

know numbers 1, 2, 3 and speak their

local dialect.  By next year, they will

be able to count numbers and speak

and read in Bahasa Indonesia, opening

their world to endless possibilities.

Because of your generosity, children

in this village of Daboto benefit from

abundant opportunities to learn,

grow, and develop their unique talents

according to God’s will.

Meet the Crocketts

Stephen and Carolyn Crockett were

one of the first to land in Daboto in

the year 2000. They acted upon God’s

calling to serve as missionaries in here,

bringing along their two daughters

Ashley and Mariah. The Crocketts are

devoted in translating the Bible into

the local MOI language and working

on a literacy program. Not only have

they introduced the Truth of God’s

Word to the local people, but they

have faithfully shown them God’s love.

This groundwork that the Crocketts

have set in Daboto serves a solid

foundation for YPH Papua to establish

quality Christian education.

Meet Emma Grace

When Emma Grace was conceived, her teenage parents (note: traditionally,

the MOI marry in their early teens) were new believers. Her dad accused her

mom of cheating on him when Emma Grace was in the womb. According to

MOI belief, babies won’t grow unless parents have ongoing intercourse. Since

her dad had gone during several months of the pregnancy, but the baby grew

anyway, he could only conclude that his wife was unfaithful to him. He ordered

his wife to kill the baby as soon as she was born. So, reluctantly, just a day or

two after the baby was born, his wife tied vines around the baby’s neck and

placed her in a net bag which hung outside the hut, leaving her to die. Someone

heard about what was happening and told the missionaries, who then took

the baby, cut the vines off of her neck, named her Emma Grace, and cared for

her for about one week. Throughout that week, the Crocketts talked with the

baby’s parents, explaining how babies grow in the womb and explaining that the

baby is a precious gift from God. Also, during that week, Emma Grace’s father

read Exodus 1 (which had been translated into MOI language), which told about

the Hebrew midwives who were blessed because they spared the lives of the

Israelite baby boys, even though Pharaoh had ordered the babies to be killed.

Emma Grace’s dad’s heart was changed and he accepted his little girl back into

his home. Now Emma Grace is an exuberant, vivacious little girl... and a future

kindergartener at SLH Daboto school. Listen to her beautiful song (which she

wrote herself) here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJ3_xZnD3KI&feature=youtu.

be. It is truly a blessing to witness God’s Truth and love touch and transform the

lives of MOI Tribe in Daboto.

Student Selection Process

On the first week of April 2016, the

team consisting of Beta Laoli who

will be the head of school in Daboto,

Jacinda Wiley, and Mici Meniagasi

who have both been through this

selection process several times before,

began a two-day selection process

for students.  They were greeted

with enthusiasm and were blessed to

see such joy and potential in these

children.  Below are photos from the

selection process.

The Student Body

After the selection process, the team

have decided to open 3 classrooms

this year: 1 kindergarten class and 2

first-grade classes. The photo below

shows Beta (pictured in the front) with

the student body. We are praying for

just the right teachers to join the team.

Let’s together pray for the preparation

of Sekolah Lentera Harapan Daboto,

both the preparation of physical

classrooms and academic materials,

as well as for everyone involved,

especially the missionaries, Steve and

Carolyn Crockett, head of school,

Beta, teachers, students, and parents.

May God continue to work through the

school so that our vision to bless the

nation through total transformational

education based on True Knowledge,

Faith in Christ, Godly Character may

be achieved.
