NTIS Prices: (Order as N89-19817/0, PC A22/MF A01) Country of publication: United States Expert systems techniques are being applied in operation

and control of the Defen~ Communications System (DCS), which has the mi~,ion of providing reliable worldwide voice, data and m ~ e ~ services for U.S. forces and commands. Thousands of personnel operate DCS facilities, and many of their functions match the classical expert system scenario: complex, skill-intensive environments with a full spectrum of problems in training and retention, cost containment, modernization, and so on. Two of these functions are: (a) fault isolation and restoral ofdedicated circuits at Tech Con- trul Centers, and (b) network management for the Defense Switched Network (the modernized dial-up voice system currently replacing AUTOVON). An expert system for the first of these is deployed for evaluation purposes at Andrews Air Force Base, and plans are being made for procurement of operational systems. In the second area, knowledge ob- tained with a Sophisticated simulator is being embedded in an expert system. The back4ground, design and status of both projects are described.

U.S. Sales Only. NTIS Price~ PC A04/MF A01 Country of Publication: Italy The availability and suitability of technological infor-

mation is of great importance in every kind of design task, especially when safety and refiabifity considerations are in- volved. In this paper an "expert system for plant design" (SEPl), is presented, together with its first application to nu- clear back-end plants. This system is available on ENEA computer network. It is thought to be u_u~_ both to collect know-how developed in the field and to assist unskilled de- signers during selection, evaluation and dimensioning tasks. It attempts to reproduce the normal way of "reasoning" and acting, and provides some graphic facilities. (Atomindex ci- tation 20.'018036)

explanation facilities in expert systems. Three ~ aspects are considered: the user model, the user interface, and the representation of knowledge. The user model Kn'ves to de- scribe and structure the specific requirements of the users with respect to the expert system. In the user interface the requirements arising from the user model are mapped on existing input and output techniques. The explicit repre~n- ration of the knowledge constitutes the b a ~ of the expla- nation capability of an expert syc.em. On the b a ~ of this concept an explanation facility for the XUMA expert system (Expertensystem Umweltgefaehr~hkeit yon Abfallstoffen = Expert System on Environmental Hazards of Waste) has been designed and implemented. The specific requirements of different user classes of XUMA have been taken into ac- count. (orig.). (Copyright © 1989 by FIZ. Citation no. 89: 080739.)

ment of PROLOG expert systems in an industrial environ- ment are discussed. The necessity for the extemion from PROLOG to an object oriented language is explained and strategies for the facilitation of expert system programming are described. In addition, the environment congructed on the PROLOG extension (EMICAT) for knowledge repre~m- ration and exploitation in the form of production rules is described. Four applicatiom in the areas of aeronautics and aerospace are dil~used including: an expert system for de- fining aircraft electronic circuits (BASILE); an expert system for satellite battery monitoring and management (GIBUS); an expert system dia~ostic aid for satellite orbit and attitude control (SCAO); and an expert system for satellite power supply management and fault detection (PCS).
