"In October 2013, I was running a Wilderness SAR course. During these courses we head out into the mountains for five days of self supported SAR activity.

On the third day the students were finishing off the sec-ond of two 55m stretcher lower exercises for the day and the stretcher had been put down on the ground at the base of the cliff. The patient - also a student - was still tied into the stretcher and the jockey was disconnecting the ropes from the bridle having calling for 1m of slack on the main and belay. Standing at the top of the cliff, the horrible sound of rock-fall below caused me to break out in an instant cold sweat as my blood turned to ice.

A 500 kg rock, probably loosened by the passage of the jockey over it, had parted from the face 1.5m above the stretcher and landed on the right side of the stretch-er at the hip level, injuring the patient. Cutting a long story short, the patient walked out the hospital 2 days later with nothing but soft tissue injuries. Initially the only visible damage to the stretcher was that the locking collar fitting was cracked and loosened, which was not surprising given that 500 kg+ had just landed in it! These stretchers are the bomb!

Once I took a closer look at it (on level ground) I discov-ered that the frame had also been deformed and the stretcher was damaged beyond safe use. If the same thing had happened with a plastic Stokes basket the out-come would have been significantly worse.

I'm looking forward to many years of rescuing with our stretcher's successor -- also a Traverse Titan. "

Traverse Rescue Stretcher (TRS) 19-0100 Ferno Vertical Rescue Stretcher (VRS) VRES STRETCH

The TRS and VRS’ roll-up, compact and lightweight design makes them ideal for high angle, confined space, horizontal or vertical rescue.

Sharing identical features and working load limits, the TRS is supplied with metal buckles and the VRS with plastic buckles.

When deployed, the wrap-around design forms rigid sides and gives the patient a feeling of security as well as protecting limbs and body from further injury during evacuation procedures.

Both the Traverse and Vertical Rescue Stretchers are fitted with many carry handles as well as six lifting slings that provide a good variety of options for transportation and lifting. Also supplied standard is an integrated and comprehensive color-coded, full body restraint system that includes a padded head restraint, six over body restraints, shoulder and groin straps along with a generous foot strap to assist with vertical lifts.

When not in use, the stretchers roll up and are easily housed within the included Cordura storage bag which doubles as a backpack.

A modern version of the traditional Neil Robertson Stretcher and is designed to be both quick and easy to use in horizontal and vertical lift situations where minimum bulk is a consideration. Its compact, roll-up design enables easy transport and storage.

• Complete with integral leg and torso flaps that envelope the patient like a traditional corset which is complimented by a simple head restraint, five built-in patient restraints and a long foot strap.

The Tirol Kit For use with Titan-Ti Tirol Basket Stretcher only

A lightweight and versatile patient transportation system ideal for long haul retrieval and technical rescue with ergonomic operation on even the most difficult terrain.

At an incredibly lightweight 10.8 kg, the Tirol Kit can be backpacked individually or divided amongst rescuers and quickly setup and used by a single rescuer. The Tirol Kit is designed for the Titan Titanium Split Basket stretcher with purpose built head and foot plates. The combination of these two lightweight products makes it possible to operate in the most hostile and inaccessible areas.

The Tirol Kit comprises four articulating and removable handles, two attached side rail/wheel axle arms, one Light Mule (lightweight wheel), two shoulder harnesses and a carry bag. The custom Titan Titanium Split Basket is sold separately.

Arachnipod Kits The Arachnipod flat packs for simple and convenient storage and the modular design provides an option to purchase a basic unit and upgrade components to make a more advanced system. How It Works The Arachnipod, in its basic form, is a simple tripod with the three legs independently pivoting from an anodised aluminium head. The modular head has a similar design to a door hinge. Inserting or removing a pin through the centre of the head allows the quick and simple addition or removal of components to create a configuration to suit any edge management scenario. Each head section contains a shackle for guying while an optional in-built twin grooved stainless steel pulley is also available.

Ferno Evac Rescue Descent Kit is the easiest method of rescue on the market. The kit is packaged ready to rescue eliminating rigging set up time. Each kit contains all the gear you need to self-rescue or evacuate one to two persons from towers, wind turbines, masts, high bay lift trucks, cranes or similar.

A controlled rate descent device with a hand wheel, geared recovery mechanism provides lifting capabilities for either one or two person, self-rescue evacuation. The hand wheel can be operated/turned three ways: via the perimeter of the wheel, via the pull out handle within the wheel or with a hand drill to the centre nut to facilitate faster ascent or descent reducing fatigue from manual operation.

Each kit contains 50 m of 9.6 mm kernmantle rope, Mark Elephant Hub, Ferno Res-Q-Link Recovery Pole, 1500mm round and snake sling, 50kN steel triplock carabiner, 100m standard rope bag.

R-ALF Rescue Systems are an ideal means of entry and rescue recovery for workers in confined space, towers, masts, wind turbines and various construction applications. The mechanical advantage pulley system is packaged ready for fast deployment for lowering or raising single or multiple workers from height, confined space and rescue scenarios.

Each is available standard with 15 m of working length with customised lengths available. The RALF rescue locking pulley features an integral brake in case accidental release of rescuers rope. The Ferno CSRK is designed for multi-purpose use including confined space entry and egress, rescue, working at height, work positioning, ascent, controlled descent and as a main or secondary system.

The 4:1 mechanical advantage lifting capability allows the operator to reduce the manual handling lift ratio to a quarter of the load weight with a manual override for descent.

The total length of rope in the system is 50 m which allows for a ‘working length’ of approximately 12 m lowering or lifting. Supplied standard with a heavy duty rope bag, also available with an optional dust proof stowage drum. Customised rope lengths available.

The ISC Edge Roller protects ropes from damage when working over sharp or abrasive edges.

The system is fully modular, consisting of edge roller boxes made from pressed and powder coated aluminium and steel oval maillons which can be easily and quickly linked together to form a chain of whatever length is appropriate for the task. Each box assembly weighs 460 g and consists of one box and two maillons. Each box has a series of rollers which protect ropes in three directions but allow the rope to run smoothly with minimal friction.

The Teufelberger KM-III is an exceptional static rope for rescue, life-safety and fixed rope applications, rappelling, hauling and caving. The Ferno Rescue Personal Lanyard allows a rescuer to quickly connect to a victim and then adjust the strap to the desired length. It works well for positioning the victim for a lowering or rappel-based pick off or for an assisted rappel.

There is an added loop to the end for a more positive grip when pulling to adjust. Depending on how the buckle is loaded, it will begin to slip between 15 kN to 20kN. Tying off the buckle will increase strength.

Designed for the rescue and retrieval of a man overboard (MOB) in a horizontal or vertical position, the Sea Scoopa enables two crew to complete the rescue operation without entering the water.

The Aquotter is a heavy duty pouch designed for water rescue and recovery of victims. It has a load limit of 350 kg (760 lbs) and is perfectly suited for water usage.

It is constructed using a heavy gauge mesh and vinyl that enables it to be used as a conventional soft litter while allowing the water to drain away from the patient as they are being hoisted into the recovery craft.

It’s thin design ensures it is easy to pull under the patient during the rescue. Multiple webbed straps and a continuous rope edging, allow the Aquotter to be easily maneu-vered under and around the patient. Unfortunately, some rescues turn into recovery op-erations and the Aquotter opens as a U-shaped zippered body bag, encapsulating the body for retrieval onto the boat or rescue craft. The mesh design makes sure that the responders are not lifting unnecessary gallons of water during the recovery.

The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) and Ferno have developed a ground-breaking Pool Extraction Board (PXB) which represents the latest in lifeguarding technology.

Designed specifically for lifeguards and operators, it provides significantly faster rescue times, improved safety, and reduc-es demands on staff. The innovative board requires just two trained users to carry out a pool rescue for deck-level pools, and three trained users for free-board pools (max free-board depth 30cms) as opposed to the traditional four users.

This means fewer lifeguards are drawn into a rescue, enabling them to continue to monitor other swimmers and perform key roles in a rescue situation. The versatile board can be used with or without a free-board and at any depth. A rescue using the new Pool Extraction Board can be accomplished in as little as 90 seconds.

Clamping Float

The Clamping float is the main flotation device for use with the Reach and Rescue Pole. Its main function is to support the pole on the surface of the water. It can also act as an individual body buoyancy aid.

Quick Up handled ascenders have a large opening so they can be comfortably used with or without gloves. The cam opening lever is easily used with one hand.

The handles are padded with a textured rubber compound which is comfortable but firm, providing a non-slip grip. The teeth are designed to minimise rope wear but are equally effective in locking or ascending the rope. Three slots prevent accumulation of dirt/mud. Two attachment holes provide possible anti-inversion cam system or additional connection points.

The RED is a simple, high performance back up device suitable for use by Rope Access technicians. Tested with 240kg it is suitable for back up rescue loads.

The cams positive locking spring means the device is self-parking rather than self-tailing. WHIFFS Mask XCA WHIFM

Perfect for wildland firefighting, overhaul and arson investigation, the Whiffs Mask is made of Yellow Advance Nomex® with Kevlar®, which carries a 1050°F heat rating. The Whiffs mask is lined with blue Indura® Ultra Soft® cloth with a hydrolone finish. This material helps to wick moisture from the firefighters face and prevents the transfer of radiant heat to the skin.

Its sleek design makes the mask comfortable to wear, even in hot climates. The Velcro® attachment points at the bridge of the nose on the outside of the mask are used for attaching the goggles. The other three Velcro attachment points on the outside of the mask are used for attaching the neck shroud (sold sepa-rately). When used with an Xcaper moist filter, the Whiffs Mask provides unparalleled firefighter protec-tion.

The Xcaper filter delivers unparalleled protection by trapping particulate matter and absorbing hazardous gasses common to the smoke in fires. They are made to be used with the Whiffs Mask, Tac-Air-Pro Mask or Manta X 20 or 30, and are ideal for wildland fires and structural overhaul, as well as for arson investigation and SWAT operations.

The combination of materials that make up the Xcaper moist filters provides a product that one can breathe through with little resistance.
