The Spanish language, especially as it is spoken by Mexicanos, Chicanos, or Pochos is aliving, active and vibrant tongue, always changing.

As the true Castilian Spanish differs from the Mexican idiom, so the English differs whenspoken in America and in the British Isles. One should be alert for minor differences. Afterall, if the native of Yonkers speaks a language sometimes unintelligible to the resident ofAmarillo, or Southern California, how could one expect the resident of Chelsea to under-stand every word and expression used by the resident of Sydney, or New York? Similarlythe Chicano, (born in Mexico - raised in the U.S.A.) the Pocho, (born in the U.S.A. _ raisedthe "old" way, in the Barrios of U.S. cities and the migrant worker camps) and the nativeMexican only lately immigrated as an adult speak a language differing each from the otherand in total from the language of the European continent which gives the commonlanguage its name.

Often Spanish speaking persons will adopt an English word, add to their language andpronounce it as if it were Spanish. This works out rather well, if one considers that Englishis 70% Latin derivation. For centruies Latin was the language of the cultured people inEngland and only common people spoke the more gutteral Germanicly derived Anglo-Saxon. Many Spanish guides and dictionaries still give "guarda en nevera" as the Spanishequivalent of keep in the refrigerator while literally the Spanish phrase should be translatedas keep in the ice-box. The correct Spanish phrase would be guarda en frigirifico. How-ever, easily recognizable to Spanish speaking U.S. residents would be guard a en refrigerador.The phrase produces some difficulties in pronunciation however (ray-free-her-ah-door).

If you attempt to speak as well as to type Spanish, the sound becomes as important asthe grammar and syntax. Therefore, the pronunciation keys have been prepared for the bestquality and accuracy of vocal use. We believe the keys will be particularly helpful to thoseinterested in bridging the communication barrier presented by language difficulties betweenmost unilingual Americans and the' second largest minority in the United States. Since thetypewriters used in the U.S. are not likely to be equipped with accent marks, these havebeen deleted.

rr or RR: This symbol represents the "rolling" R, and pronounced somewhat like thenoise made by little boys playing soldier and simulating automatic weapons. (Some-what less exaggerated.)

h: When the lower case h is used with a vowel, it indicates that the vowel takes thesofter sound than it would have in the English pronunciation. (Example: tah indicatesthat the "a" is sounded as in the word raw rather than rack or cake.

C-K-A, etc.: Capital letters are interpollated, this means they are to take the samesound they would have in English. (C = see, que = K = Kay.)

k (lower case) is used to indicate the vowel sound in English speech. (k - the sound,as in cake.)

d = th: Here you would pronounce the word in which the paranthetical (th) appearsas you would in English, adding a slight slur giving it the sound of "th" as in "this."(Example: puede = poo-A-d(th)ay. Sound the. ending syllable as if you lisped slightlywhen starting to say "day.")

ko: This is pronounced as co in cooperation or Puerto Rico.

yo: Yo, as in yo-yo.

POSTSCRIPT TO THIS SCRIBD POSTING This was given to me by a pharmacist friend of mine who also happens to be one of the authors: Don Pavon. I am not really sure why I am posting it here, other than the fact that Don and his company Paramedical Consultants are both deceased. I scanned it into my computer because it was becoming way to beat up to keep as a hard copy. It was used when Don gave it to me, was not really a very expensive booklet to start with, having a modern plastic pamphlet binding on it, but it was a good idea. There are longer, probably better, books for medical professionals out on the market today to help with the increasing need to bridge the Tower of Babel, but this is one of the first.
