On July 31, Kevin Lin, the ultra marathon runner from Taiwan, once again successfully accomplished another extreme expedition, this time running across the Gobi Desert, a distance of 2,400 km, in nearly 40 days. Delta Chairman Yancey Hai was waiting for Mr. Lin to cheer him at the destination - Jiayu Pass and ran with him in the last stretch of the quest. During the expedition, Lin and his team recorded a vivid documentary of surviving the world's three most arid regions, which will serve as an appeal for the world to cherish water resources. Before his departure, I met briefly with Mr. Lin to tell him that Delta would sponsor the expedition and express our strong support for his appeal. Taking this opportunity, I also gave him and his team the latest Innergie PocketCell Duo portable battery pack and Vivitek Qumi projector. Using these cutting edge technologies from Delta, they could ensure uninterrupted power supply for their electronic devices and constantly review the documentary they shot.

This is the first time for Delta to sponsor an athlete. With documentary, Mr. Lin wishes to promote environmental education. This aim resonates with our corporate mission, "To provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow," and Delta brand promise of "Smarter. Greener. Together." Our sponsorship is hence a solid initiative for the corporate social responsibility. Through Lin's demonstration, we also hope Innergie and Vivitek products could be widely publicized.

Speaking of brand publicity, "advertising" is very important. In the "Special Report" of this issue, we introduce Delta's Brand Advertising Strategy and explain the what (to say), how (to say it), whom (to say it to), and where (to say it) of this strategy. DGC also shared with us their advertising experience over the years and how to maximize the value by constantly changing the method and the form of advertising as time goes by.

In the "Brand People" column, we interviewed Delta Northeast Asia General Manager CH Ko. In mid-July, DEJ successfully appeared in Japan's largest electronics and power supply trade fair, Techno-Frontier. Energy products and solutions from Delta received warm response. Ko emphasizes quality and service. He directed DEJ for more than 20 years with the motto "selecting the right client and the right product". What will Ko's strategies be for DEJ in the next 20 years? You will find the answer from the report.

Delta's display solutions have recently shone over the National Center for Traditional Arts (NCFTA) in Yilan and the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) in Taichung. With the sophisticated LED lighting control system, we created a nighttime modern version of the famous painting "Along the River during the Qingming Festival" at NCFTA, with daily energy consumption less than NT$60. At the NMNS we decorated the eight-storey greenhouse into an LED light sculpture with 234 sets of energy-saving lighting fixtures recycled from the Ring of Celestial Bliss with Delta's lighting integration solutions, for less than NT$35 a day. In the current issue, we would share with you these recent successes Delta achieved.

Special Report

< Text by BMO, Marketing Communication Department/ DGC >

To build a strong "brand" relies on two fundamentals: branded business, which refers to comprehensive operation cycle and branding, the initiatives to build association with brand. Moreover, advertising is the most common used vehicle in branding.

An analogy of "advertising campaign" is the "entry and presentation" of actors performing in a play; the preparations of a campaign is like the setting and warming-up before actors step onto stage. It takes a step-by-step process and enormous time to practice so that the most appropriate and best side could be presented to the audience. In this issue’s special report, we'd like to share with you the advertising strategy of Delta.

Simply speaking, the basic elements of an "advertising strategy" are as follows:

● What (what to say)● How (how to say it)● Who (who to say it to)● Where (where to say it)

Let's start with "what" and "how". According to many international branding experts, boosting sales is the aim of brand building. Also, continuous increase of brand awareness and the constant accumulation of brand equity are ways to promote sustainable growth of the company. In addition, "advertising" plays a decisive role in brand

communication. Many internationally known industrial brands continuously advertise on major media. When Delta advertises its brand, what should we say and what message should be conveyed to customers?

"Brand Promise" is what we should say.

Delta’s advertising strategy of brand communication

Page 5: Special Report Delta's advertising strategy of brand ... Brand News_10_EN.pdf · Delta's advertising strategy of brand communication ... Marketing Communication Department/ DGC >

03Brand News

It was the first time Delta defined a "brand promise" in 2012. Brand Management Office started meticulous planning and explored basic brand elements, which included a global market survey, re-categorization of business sectors and definition of brand architecture and communication architecture, launching a CI system (CIS), and more. The output of each stage of the process was the input for the following stage. After creating all the basics, we extracted the following strategic focus and positioning after analyzing mega trends of markets and Delta's core competences and values and then conducted in-depth discussions with the management team.

● Business Focus: Becoming a solution provider of system integration● Brand Attributes: Efficiency/Reliability (Functional), Caring/Bonding (Emotional)● Communication Concept: We believe in technology advancement and collaboration with customers in a

changing world● Brand Promise: Smarter. Greener. Together.

With "what to say" decided upon, it was time to consider "how to say it". That was the stage for ad creation and production.

Continuously shaping establishes the impression of Smarter. Greener. Together. To persuade a customer to buy a product or to retain a brand impression after watching is the essential magic of advertising. This all depends on the strategy and objective of advertisers. Besides broadcasting, advertising combines text and images to present the unique selling points of the products or the characteristics of the brand.

How would Delta say Smarter. Greener. Together.? How to communicate Delta's brand promise with text and images was the principal mission at this stage.

"Smarter" represents the technical core competences of Delta in power efficiency and renewable energy. "Greener" refers the corporate mission: "To provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow". "Together" is Delta's philosophy. It represents the establishment of long-term partnerships with customers. In this case, how could we logically convert these three seemingly independent messages into one creative, attractive, and easy to remember advertising?

When we were focusing on creation, the phrase "for a better tomorrow" kept coming to the minds of the creative team. "Blue sky, green grass, and our next generations? Right, these were the elements for further development. We could put Delta's products and services in this key vision to explain how Delta's efficient and reliable solutions could create a better tomorrow."

Based on such creative logic and concepts, Delta launched its first brand campaign in April 2012, forty years after the company was first founded.

● Blue sky, green grass, and children were the main scene expressing the concept of "for a better tomorrow".

● A green and blue line drawing emphasized the connections of Delta products and services with Smarter and Greener.

● A picture drawn with green and blue pens together emphasized partnership and the spirit of being "together".

Communication medium of industrial brandAfter determining advertising materials, it was time to discuss whom to say it to and where to say it.

Although TV, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radio, and outdoor advertising are the most common communication media, the most effective and the most expensive TV commercial may not be appropriate for B2B industrial brands, as the percentage of reachable target groups is low, and the return on advertising is thus much lower.

After collecting and analyzing a massive amount of market information, we drew up a strategy for allocating media resources for brand advertising in the first year.

360º communication at international industry tradeshowsInternational trade shows were the target medium of Delta's strategy for allocating media resources for brand advertising in the first year. In practice, large-scale outdoor advertisements outside of exhibition venues and advertising in peripheral media were made to achieve full-range communication.

In April 2012, Delta participated in Hannover Messe on a group scale for the first time. Delta integrated its energy management products and technologies to showcase the power of its industrial automation and energy system solutions. We also announced to international media the launch of our branding campaign: "Smarter. Greener. Together." to fully display our determination to cultivate the European market with our own brand. At Hannover Messe 2012, we made five large-scale outdoor advertisements. It was also the first time Delta advertised at Hannover Messe.

In November 2012, Delta set the China International Industry Fair as its target and committed substantial advertising resources. Apart from large-scale outdoor advertising, posters, indoor signboards, and banners at the event venue and in event publications, we also advertised at the Shanghai Pudong/Hongqiao International Airport; in international and regional magazines such as The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek, Caijing, China News Weekly, and CEO CIO; and in popular internet portals such as Phoenix New Media (www.ifeng.com).

Many Taiwanese businessmen were amazed to see our ads at Shanghai Pudong International Airport and

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, and made comments such as "the glory of Taiwan shines over China."

In 2012, besides Hannover Messe and the China International Industry Fair, we advertised at Techno-Frontier of Japan, SPS/IPC/Drives show in Nuremburg, Germany, and 2012 Electronica in EMEA after discussing with regional offices about continuously increasing brand awareness and brand image.

In 2012 Strategy Meeting, Mr. Hai emphasized Delta's direction in "regional market development and cultivation." After discussing with regional offices and referring to the revenue proportion of global brands, we established a brand advertising strategy for 2013. Industry fairs are still the target of Delta's 2013 brand advertising strategy to enhance brand image.

Employees advocate the Delta Brand"Advertising" is part of "brand communication". Besides communicating Delta's brand spirit through mass media, how to continuously improve Delta's brand image is just as important. Advertising is effective but it is only a short-lived campaign. Delta employees are Delta's best brand representatives. Through each contact with customers, we can fulfill our brand promise: Smarter. Greener. Together. Our brand image becomes a perception of our customers that can continuously improve Delta's brand value.

Advertising practices of DGCDelta Greentech China (DGC) has years of advertising experience. After careful planning, DGC began advertising the Delta brand in comprehensive Chinese industrial automation media in 2006. In this special report, Vivien Feng, DGC Marketing Communication Dept. Director, shared with us the "Advertising Experience of DGC".

Utilizing various vehicles for specific purpose DGC's comprehensive advertising includes outdoor billboard advertising on highways and exhibition vehicles in cities, as well as online and print advertising. We distribute advertising in different media and each medium plays an important role in our advertising strategy.

Outdoor AdvertisingBillboard advertising plays a role in our brand publicity. It displays our corporate image of "clean, clear, and large" screens containing "attractive and clear" copy. Currently, DGC has 18 billboards on 18 national highways across China. At the end of 2013, we will advertise on 27 national highways. After seeing our advertisements, many customers expressed a positive reaction.

Vehicle AdvertisingIn recent years, we have invested more energy in exhibition vehicles than big marketing events. We consider exhibition vehicles an event since they have become an important advertising medium. On average, each exhibition vehicle runs across China twice a year to bring Delta solutions in front of customers in different cities.

Online AdvertisingDirect interaction with users is the main feature of our online advertising. At present, we have signed advertising contracts with nearly 20 websites. These include websites providing professional information on automation, video, data centers, IT, and technical trends, commonly known as "professional websites"; and websites providing information on textiles, telecommunications, machine tools, electricity supply, and technology application, commonly known as "industry websites". In addition, we have advertised many times in the news reports of Delta, because online media are powerful channels to increase exposure frequency.

One medium carries messages in different levels

Print MediaThese advertisements include "product advertisements" explaining the features and functions of products; and "solution advertisements" presenting Delta total solutions. With different advertising content, we hope to fully demonstrate the "high-end, quality, and comprehensive" functions of the graphic medium.

Special Report

News reports is another function supported by the graphic medium. Using news, interviews, case studies, technical solutions, and topic discussions, DGC communicates the essentials of Delta to customers in different regions.

The appearance of print advertisements in the form of the "Delta Column" is a new form of advertising that DGC developed over the past two years. It is embedded in the table of contents of the magazine and combines advertising with interviews and case studies to promote new products and solutions with undeniable effect.

The InternetThe Internet provides more comprehensive ways of presentation. In addition to active advertising, DGC has realized direct exchange with customers over the Internet.

DGC has organized online forums, created an online community, and held online seminars.

The forum was developed earlier on as a platform for interaction and exchange. As industrial products need a technical background, the forum has become a place for technical exchange and solutions searching for engineers. DGC has invested much energy and manpower to better answer questions from customers. Our customers are good at exchanging with DGC over the Delta forum in leading media. At present, we handle dozens of customer questions over the online forum each month.

The online community is another interaction platform developed in the online forum. It integrates information, data downloads, forums, online seminars, and mail functions on the same webpage. Instead of an individual advertisement, customers will see a full-featured "web in a web".

The online seminar is one of the more effective network platforms. Each year, DGC holds more than a dozen online seminars. After recording the speeches of engineers, we broadcast it at specific sessions to attract an online audience. In general, the whole process takes two hours, including a speech in the first 45 minutes and a Q&A session the rest of the time. The online seminar also supports the online replay function. If a customer cannot join the seminar in real time, he can watch it at any later time.

The way to read advertising changes and evolves as time goes by. Now, DGC has started to advertise in new Internet media, such as Weibo, WeChat, and other apps. Successful advertising means advertising in the right place and in the right way, so it is accepted by target customers. This is also the aim of DGC's advertising strategy.

According to the literature, the human voice was the earliest medium for advertising, known as "hawking". In Ancient Greece, slaves, animals, and goods were sold by hawking.

The signboard was another early form of advertising. For example, during the Roman Empire, a goat was the logo of a dairy farm; and a donkey turning a millstone was the symbol for a bakery.

As early as the Western Zhou Dynasty, hawkers would play a flute to advertise their sweets. In the classic Chinese novel, Water Margin, wine banners hanging in a tavern's entrance would read "can't pass Jingyang Hill after 3 bowls". These were early forms of advertising.

NCFTA LED light sculpture and 3D puppetry show performed with Delta solutions< Text by Julia Chiang/ SLBU; Ray Shen/ DSBU >

Summer vacation has started! The National Center for Traditional Arts (NCFTA) in Taiwan Yilan launched the Starry Riverview event with Delta's LED light sculpture and 3D puppetry show for NCFTA with lighting and display integration solutions.

There are unique natural river views and rich ecological resources in NCFTA. With an LED solution which integrates energy-saving lighting software and hardware control system and power transmission design, Delta decorated the Dongshan River with riverside LED line lights, grass astral lights, and pillar lights to present sumptuous nighttime river views like a modern version of Along the River during the Qingming Festival. Although up to 450 LED lights and more than 500 LED bulbs were installed in the light sculpture area, daily energy consumption is still less than NT$60. Visitors can thus enjoy a green and romantic lighting show.

In addition, upgrading traditional puppetry shows into 3D is another NCFTA achievement this summer. Delta's display integration solutions, using the latest DP Titan Super Quad DLP and technology with 20,000 lm, provide audiences the enjoyable visual sensation of 3D puppetry shows in front of a 440 inch screen.

Delta DVCS enters major Chinese industries< Text by Video Wall System Department/ DGC >

As video technology continues to mature, unlike traditional centralized controls, distributed control can capture signal sources distributed in different areas and transmit them to distributed display units. The Distributive Vision Control System (DVCS) from Delta is the world's first web-based distributive vision control system. After DVCS was launched in China it has fulfilled the application demands of different industries. The distributed network, full HD real-time display, IFi (iPad Wi-Fi Control) support, integrated audio and video, and free viewing window design are innovative features bringing users a brand new experience. Today, Delta DVCS has demonstrated its active role in emergency command, monitoring, dispatch, and exhibition of power plants, transportation, broadcasting, the petrochemical industry, industrial production, and the military.

Emergency command and drill system for power plantsDVCS has successfully helped Heilongjiang Power Company to modify its centralized display into a distributed display of the emergency command center system. Today, the system can run synchronous audiovisual drills with the State Grid Directorate General and provincial and local command centers. After combining with the video acquisition system of headquarters, DVCS can provide quick, real-time, multi-layer, and all-direction 3D display of nationwide power accident scenes and rescue actions.

Railway dispatch and command center systemThe Shanhaiguan Station of Shenyang Railway is a top class station handling passenger and cargo transportation. As the number of trains increases each year, the need for upgrade of the dispatch system is urgent. Based on the characteristics of top class station operation, Delta successfully developed a one-stop management and monitoring solution featuring high-brightness, full HD, and highly intelligent control to fulfill the three major demands of the station with DVCS. These demands included "real-time display of dispatch, seamless switch of screens, and real-time full HD images".

Government emergency response command center systemWith DVCS, Delta successfully fulfilled the two major demands for the emergency response and integrated service platform of Anshan City in Liaoning province. These include displaying government policies and regulations on the large video display on the first floor and the emergency command display in the monitoring center on the second floor. By overcoming the distance limit of video signal transmission, DVCS has solved the separation of two sets of display units on two different floors. When hundreds of video signals come in, the DVCS supports signal source input of different device manufacturers from different IPs with its tremendous processing capability.

Production dispatch and command system for the mineral industryDongfa Dongzhouyao Coal Mine recently installed a Delta DVCS for its dispatch and command system. The contract included the display of monitoring computer/workstation graphic signals, high-resolution GIS information, and industrial TV monitoring video signals. Traditional multi-screen image control solutions support a total of only eight circuits. By supporting and processing multiple signal sources through network data interchange and signal transmission, the broadband-based distributed architecture of the DVCS provides optimal solutions for the dispatch and command center of coal mines.

Large screen display system for oil company call centerWith DVCS, Delta built the large screen display system for the call center of Daqing Oil Field in Heilongjiang. It is powerful but easy to operate and allows users to easily manage different display units on the TV wall, cross-screen display, roaming, size change, and position change. DVCS has won high praise from its customers.

Ultra marathoner Kevin Lin conquers the GobiDelta sponsors HD documentary to urge cherishing water resources< Text by Wendy Shih/ Corporate Communications >

With a pair of feet, simple equipment, exceptional physical strength, and the determination to run for cherishing water resources, polar circle ultra marathoner Kevin Lin from Taiwan successfully conquered the vast Gobi Desert after overcoming different kinds of challenges, such as extreme heat, physical injury and desert storms. At the end of July, Lin arrived at the Jiayu Pass to finish his 2,400km extreme journey that lasted for nearly 40 days.

At the Jiayu Pass, Delta Chairman Yancey Hai was waiting for Lin and ran with him on the last mileage. Besides expressing acclaim for Lin's being the first in history to walk through one the world's top three water shortage regions, Hai has shown Delta's support for Lin's appeal to the world to cherish water resources.

Lin set out his trans-Gobi journey from the Bei'er Lake in Mongolia on June 23. It was the season with the least stable weather in the region. As the title sponsor of this extreme challenge that attracted global attention, Delta supported Lin to make a documentary on the Gobi Desert and participate in international film festivals, and put Lin's challenging and adventurous story on the big screen. Everyone on earth will see the severity of water scarcity and medical service shortage that nomadic peoples living in the Gobi, the fringe of the world, are facing.

Delta also provided two required secret gears: the newest Innergie PocketCell Duo portable battery pack to ensure uninterrupted power supply for electronic devices in the vast desert for Lin's team; and the Vivitek Qumi Q7 HD LED portable projector supporting 107-inch screen, for Lin to review in the camp on a large screen the part of documentary made each day.

social responsibility to develop comprehensive high-efficient and energy-saving solutions and products over time. Over the past three years, these products have saved up to 930 million kWh of electricity. They have been implemented on g reen c ampuses , such as Namas ia Elementary School in Kaohsiung City. Besides demonstrating the maximum synergy in energy saving, these high-efficient and energy-saving solutions and products have been successfully blended with energy education.

At Computex Taipei 2013, different scenarios were designed to display these high-efficient and energy-saving solutions and products. These included classrooms, the library, the company convenience store, outdoor education, camps and shuttle bus. By combining Delta's solutions and products with these scenarios, we allowed buyers and visitors to better realize the actual performance and benefits. The Vivietk Qumi Q5/Q7 series and Innergie USB charger were the most attractive products.

It is noteworthy that maximization of educational functions and minimization of environment impact were considered right at the beginning of venue design. Therefore, 95% of the decoration is recyclable and reusable. After the show, we will relocate the Delta Sunshine Elementary School to the lobby of the Delta Yang-Kuang Building in August. This way, we can extend the energy education functions of the Delta Sunshine Elementary School through the Delta Foundation.

Delta builds new energy-saving landmark in Taiwan: Light sculpture for Tropical Rainforest Greenhouse at NMNS < Text by Pamela Huang/ DEF >

Delta Electronics Foundation (DEF) and the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) together announced the activation of the LED light sculpture at the Tropical Rainforest Greenhouse of NMNS. The LED light sculpture is made with 234 sets of energy-saving lighting fixtures recycled from Delta's Ring of Celestial Bliss. Along with the Delta lighting integration solution, this LED light sculpture decorates NMNS' eight-storey Tropical Rainforest Greenhouse to make it energy-saving and gorgeous at the same time, for less than NT$35 a day.

The skyline of the entire building is made up of LED line lights from Delta. The ever-changing rhythm is presented by the color bloom projected by the LED floodlights and LED down-lights, which also enhance the drama of the greenhouse at nighttime.

Extending the spirit of sustainability, DEF and SLBU designed this light sculpture based on the characteristics of rainforests, the light sculpture presents the rainwater harvesting function of "rainwater and rivers", the ecology of "biodiversity", the rainforest "breathing", and the "disappearance" of rainforests. By realizing the "reuse" concept and advocating energy-saving technology, DEF and SLBU hope to rouse the public to face the catastrophe of rainforest ecology and concern themselves with climate change.

DEJ’s path to business management: Dealing with the right clients and productsAn Interview with General Manager of Delta Northeast Asia, CH Ko

Brand People

< Text by Mon Liu/ DEJ >

Japan's largest annual electronics exhibition "Techno-Frontier" recently took place in Tokyo. At the Delta booth there was a salesman passionately leading visitors into introductions of the various products and solutions that Delta provides. It wasn't until the visitors exchanged business cards, that they realized the salesman was in fact the General Manager of Delta Northeast Asia, C.H. Ko. Ko emphasizes execution, always taking charge and personally leading his team to success. He was the very first employee of Delta Electronics Japan (DEJ), which now has offices in both Tokyo and Osaka with approximately 150 employees. In addition, Delta Electronics Korea (DEK) has also grown in recent years, and now has a few dozen employees. In the past twenty years, Ko has held onto his beliefs as he has fought for Delta's interests in northeast Asia. He appreciates the continued support from headquarters and his fellow colleagues.

GM of Delta Northeast Asia, Mr. CH Ko

DEJ held product seminars at "Techno-Frontier" and attracted many visitors

21Brand News

The first ten years of DEJ

In 1989, Ko, who had only joined Delta for a year, played an important role in overseas expansion at a critical time. Delta planned to establish a presence in Japan, and Ko was appointed to this important task. Looking back at when he took on the mission to find a liaison office location in Tokyo, Ko smiled and claimed the search ended sooner than initially expected. "I only flew to Tokyo twice, as it only took me around five days to find an office," said Ko. "I was the only employee at the time, so Mr. Cheng had me stationed in Tokyo. I would have never expected my stay to last for twenty years!"

In 1999, an affordable and open space in Tokyo's central business district was listed on the real estate market, and Ko saw an opportunity to buy the land and build an establishment. "The competition was fierce, as there were multiple other buyers who had a high willingness to pay," Ko recalled the situation as if it were yesterday. "The broker wanted me to make a decision within thirty minutes, and requested a remittance of 10% of the transaction price as a deposit. I am still extremely grateful to Mr. Cheng and the management team. Without any screening or inspection in person, they not only gave me full authorization, and completely trusted my judgment, but also immediately wired over a large amount of deposit money. A week later, another buyer offered a higher price than ours, but because we had already paid our deposit in advance, the deal was ours. The current Tokyo office was built on that piece of land."

Later in 2010, the Osaka office was built. To purchase the building, Ko, again gained authorization from the corporate management team. When the 311 Tohoku Earthquake occurred, the Tokyo office was forced to close down due to power outages and the Osaka office took on DEJ operations and played a significant part in DEJ history.

Selecting business partners, and staying committed

DEJ has deepened its trust with business par tners. " Without trust, no business opportunities will occur no matter of how high one's product quality is," said Ko. "It is because Japanese people accentuate trust and demand quality. We have aimed for major companies since the beginning. The first few years, we barely had any business; however, we remained hopeful. We believed in selecting the right business partners and products, aiming for the right goals, and maintaining our commitment."

In recent years, DEJ has actively expanded its business in the

industrial automation (IA) field. Ko believes the region must build by competing on "efficiency", "quality", "service", and "price". He also believes that Tier 1 clients can only be won over by integrity. "Sustaining a business is not about creating the greatest value or profit at the moment, but about whether there will be a stable long-term growth - this is where the real Delta brand value lies."

The next 20 golden years of DEJWhen asked about business strategies, Ko believes that a huge portion of DEJ still relies on ODM/OEM business in the short term. However, he foresees a market diminishing tendency. "DEJ will gradually transform into a solutions provider, rather than a stand-alone product provider. For instance, in terms of IA products, Japanese clients accentuate the application level of the products, as they desire an overall packaged service. The regional office closely interacts with business units (BU) by offering feedback on the IA market. The BU's acceptance represents a virtuous cycle."

Ko cited displays as another example. He believes that the current consumer electronics market is overly developed. To transform OEM/ODM into the next phase, infrastructure development must be connected. This will open doors to a new market. "It's been fifty years since Japan's last established an electricity infrastructure. Our next move is not to repair or update these devices, but to massively rebuild building infrastructures that are suitable for future smart community environments. Under such a premise, Delta will have an entrance opportunity. We are preparing now for the right timing."

It's been more than twenty years since Ko joined Delta, and he still guides DEJ and DEK to breaking new grounds. To demonstrate Delta's strength in providing solutions, he has established goals to expand business in three different directions: energy, telecommunications, and transportation. As a role model for all employees, Ko strives alongside his colleagues, and is ready to embrace the coming twenty golden years.

Ko actively interacted with and chose the right clients back when DEJ was founded

< Text: Interview excerpts from Global Insight by Chin-ho Hsieh >

In late June, Delta’s Chairman Yancey Hai was interviewed by host Chin-ho Hsieh of ETTV's Global Insight, a popular financial TV program in Taiwan. In the interview, Chairman Hai talked about the development and branding strategies of Delta in rapidly changing industrial and business environments. Particularly, Delta created 25.6% gross profit in Q1 of this year, which is unprecedented in the electronics industry compared to the traditional 3-4%. Chairman Hai also shared with the audience how Delta has transformed into a systems and solutions provider, reduced the proportion of PC products through "portfolio adjustment", and increased investments in industrial automation products and passive components, which are major product lines with high profit margins. The editorial team has specially excerpted part of the Global Insight interview to share the company’s innovative outcomes and the direction of future developments with employees.

Host Chin-ho Hsieh (Q): When I visited the Taoyuan R&D Center of Delta recently, I saw many different items, including servo motors, robot controllers, CNC controllers, and roof PV panels. They all are good. But what surprised me most were the many energy-saving designs for green buildings that are rarely seen in Taiwan. Delta is a switching power supply (SPS) manufacturer. Through continuous innovation, you have been reducing the proportion of PC products. More importantly, your EPS content changes significantly every few years. Can you tell us the process of your transformation?

Chairman Yancey Hai (A): Our Taoyuan R&D Center was completed in 2011. So far, it is the latest of the 12 green buildings we have built and it integrates all of our accumulated experience since the first one was built in Tainan in 2006. The Taoyuan R&D Center can achieve more than 50% in energy savings. With the rainwater harvesting system, its water-saving performance is 75% higher than other green buildings. As water resources are increasingly important, we are taking early measures to harvest rainwater.

As for our future direction, we started as an electronics component supplier, specifically an SPS supplier. We became the world-leading SPS supplier in 2002 because we are the best and our output was the highest. Now, we need to change to system integration and solutions. This is because the electronics component market is not that big and the added value of electronics components is not that high. That's why we have turned to systems and solutions. There's another issue. If we sell systems and solutions, we must not repeat our SPS experience. Since an SPS is hidden inside a PC, nobody can see it. The solution to this issue is bringing Delta Inside to Delta Outside. For example, we put our logo on our industrial automation products and UPSs, so that everyone can see it. "Branding" is a long-term mission, so we established

a branding office in 2010. Now, we are slowly but persistently taking this road.

Q: Here are some figures I hope you can explain to us, Chairman Hai. In general, 7-8% is the maximum gross profit for SPS suppliers. The case of Delta is quite different. In Q1 this year, your gross profit reached 25.6%. Compared with many Taiwanese PC OEM/ODM manufacturers, such as Foxconn, 5% is almost the top, and many only have 3-4%. You are one of the very best in terms of gross profit, how did you do that?

A: There are several ways. The first is cost down. I am talking about process improvement and design improvement, instead of exploiting labor. For example, we used to have 100 workers on an SPS line. Now, we only need 25. As labor shortages in China intensify, this is our solution. Of course, automation also plays an important part. Our control on purchasing costs is another factor. One more thing, in the long run we have changed the portfolio of our business items. In terms of PC products, we sold both SPS and fans last year, and they made up about 25% of our revenue. This year, we reduced their sales portion to 18% in Q1. Now, we are enjoying higher gross profits with new products, such as industrial automation products and passive components.

Q: Right, most PC manufacturers in Taiwan find it difficult to transform. For example, since tablets began to replace PCs in the last couple of years, fewer and fewer businessmen carry notebooks. As a result, leading PC manufacturers face a difficult situation. You've just mentioned that more than 50% of Delta's products were PC products. Now, you have reduced this to 18%, and this is a very small proportion. What will be the major products creating high gross profits for Delta in the future?

A: I think industrial automation (IA) is a good example of product innovation. As a matter of fact, people began noticing the importance of IA only a couple of years ago. However, we started developing IA products in 1995. The IA market is big. According to our estimates, it is a US$100 billion market. At present, this market is dominated by a few leading manufacturers in Europe, the US, and Japan, and there is much room for us to improve. Passive components are another example. Take the mobile device you've just mentioned. People are asking for smaller size, lighter weight, but more functions. Space thus becomes very important. At present, Cyntec, a Delta subsidiary, produces passive components for us. For example, a choke is already very small, and you need a magnifier

Page 27: Special Report Delta's advertising strategy of brand ... Brand News_10_EN.pdf · Delta's advertising strategy of brand communication ... Marketing Communication Department/ DGC >

25Brand News

Brand Academy

to see it. However, the new generation choke is only a quarter the size, which is much smaller.

Q: You've just mentioned Cyntec, because it was acquired by Delta about two years ago. Delta merged with Delta Networks Inc. (DNI), it was an internal merger. This year, DelSolar was also acquired by Neo Solar Power. From these mergers and acquisitions, we can see that Delta has been expanding in recent years. What advantages will this bring?

A: From components to systems is the road we have decided on. After internal discussion, we hope to develop toward One Delta. This way, interdepartmental cooperation will be more effective. For an independent listed company, there is revenue pressure, and a responsibility to shareholders. The road it takes will not be exactly the same as the one we take. To us, communication, networks, and wireless broadband are the main trends of the future. At present, we are applying DNI products to IA, because machine-to-machine communication counts in the network communication technology of DNI.

Q: Big data is a popular topic. What is Delta's deployment for it ?

A: "Green data centers" is still our direction. Data centers today are getting bigger and bigger, such as the data centers of Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and so on. Each is as big as a football field and contains more than hundreds of thousands of servers. Huge power consumption is the big problem for these massive data centers, and the operating costs are usually huge. As the efficiency of the power supply units of Delta's data centers is greater than 96%, they are more efficient, as confirmed by our winning a Titanium Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. Along with other Delta products, such as fans, network products, UPSs, distributors, and others, we can significantly reduce the power consumption of our data centers. The One Delta I've just mentioned is the best example.

Q: In terms of the robot controllers, LED lighting, and electric vehicles we saw at the Taoyuan R&D Center, what are the future directions of Delta's development?

A: We have made some changes to our LED strategy. That is, from selling LED bulbs to selling LED lighting, and on to developing systems. For example, the

National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan has recently implemented our lighting integration solution. The power supply unit is our advantage, because our chips have a very long life, generally over 20,000 hours. If a power supply unit is no good, its life is only a few months. We have much experience in manufacturing outdoor power supply units, and this allows us to use such experience on lighting products.

Robots are another direction. We specialize in robotic arms. At present, our robotic arms are used on many production lines. In my opinion, population pressure in China is getting increasingly serious, and robots will become more and more important to production lines. Besides saving labor costs, they enhance yield rates.

Now, let 's talk about electric vehicles (EV). Our powertrain system includes a motor, battery, power supply unit, and electronic power controller. We provide a complete solution. At present, we are working in collaboration with automakers in China, Europe, and the US. We also provide EV charging solutions. For example, we have recently built charging stations at Sun Moon Lake, with Toyota supplying EVs for visitors to experience ecotourism at the lake.

Q: In terms of green buildings, Delta is a pioneer in Taiwan. Will Delta develop green factory designs or export or manufacture related products to prosper overseas?

A: This is part of our plan, since we have a lot of accumulated experience after building a dozen green buildings. At present, we are using all of our energy-saving methods in our own buildings. We also hope to share them with others, so we have established a Solutions & Integration (SI) Business Department to promote green building to the public.

3D-printing food in space? NASA has awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I to study the feasibility of using additive manufacturing, better known as 3D printing, for making food in space. NASA is funding this phase I six-month $125,000 study on 3D printing of foods to develop a 3D printed food system for long duration space missions.

Over long duration missions, a variety of acceptable food is critical to ensure crew members continue to get the nutrients they need to maintain their health and performance. Because refrigeration and freezing require significant spacecraft resources, current NASA provisions consist solely of individually prepackaged shelf stable foods, processed with technologies that degrade the micronutrients in the foods.

NASA's Advanced Food Technology program is interested in developing the capability of this technology to enable nutrient stability and provide a variety of foods for crew members.

Pets turned into mobile WiFi hotspotThailand based mobile telecommunication company DTAC recently launched its new WiFi service to execute the concept of "Moving WiFi". DTAC built WiFi hotspot devices and hooked them up to pets. The idea was to attach the devices to pets and turn them into walking and free WiFi hotspots.

Some time ago, Texas BBH Labs had transformed the homeless into 4G hotspot, but in that case the public reaction was extremely negative for many considered detrimental to the idea of human dignity of the homeless, despite the fact that the company was planning to raise funds to donate to their aid with the initiative. Therefore, by attaching the devices to pets in Thailand, it's a new kind of hotspot that users can play and interact with.

Teen's invention could create 20-second phone chargeCalifornia teen Eesha Khare was awarded a $50,000 prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for creating a breakthrough technological device that may revolutionize our experience with mobile devices.

The futuristic gadget has the potential to fully charge cell phones in as few as 20 seconds flat. Also, the super-capacitor has the potential to hold the charge longer than current devices, lasting for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles, compared to only 1,000 cycles on conventional rechargeable batteries. "The super-capacitor I have developed uses a special nanostructure, which allows for a lot greater energy per unit volume," Khare said.

Eesha Khare has been courted and contacted by some of the world's most innovative tech companies, including Google and other tech giants.

World has 10 years of shale oilGlobal shale resources are vast enough to cover more than a decade of oil consumption, according to the first-ever U.S. assessment.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimated "technically recoverable" shale oil resources of 345 billion barrels in 42 countries it surveyed, or 10 percent of global crude supplies. The assessment indicated that Russia has the largest shale oil resource, followed by U.S., China, Argentina and Libya.

Only the U.S. and Canada were producing oil and natural gas from shale in commercial quantities, the department said. World oil demand is about 90 million barrels a day, suggesting the world shale oil resource covers 10 years of consumption.

The fun of LOHAS travelling in Japan< Text by Claire Ou/ IABG >

Japan is probably the first choice of most backpackers and individual travelers in Taiwan for the following reasons: a clean environment, low crime rate, convenient transportation, not far from Taiwan, and some kind of language similarity (Chinese characters). These are also my reasons for visiting Japan so many times.

Many colleagues often tease me, saying that Japan is like my backyard garden, because I went there as I wished. During my five visits to Japan, I have traveled to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara. Just Tokyo alone, I have been there four times. In recent years, I visited Japan whenever I had travel leave at Delta. You can say that I have visited nearly all sightseeing spots and tried almost all gourmet foods in Tokyo. Many think that things are very expensive in Tokyo. In fact, if we can start with some small things, we can cut some unnecessary daily living expenses and enjoy ecotourism with endless fun at an affordable price.

Food: Although it may be expensive, gourmet food is always an important part of any visit to Japan. Take the internationally famous ramen as an example, in a ramen restaurant, a glass of 450ml Coke is about ¥200-300. The price of the same drink may increase to ¥300-400 in a yakiniku (Japanese barbecue restaurant) restaurant or an izakaya (Japanese mini bar), and the price of other drinks are even more expensive. In Japanese culture, it is Japanese custom to order a drink before dining in an izakaya or a yakiniku restaurant. When eating in a ramen restaurant or a snack bar, I would use the free water instead. This is because the quality of drinking water in Japan is high, and general tap water contains no harm and a lot of minerals as well.

I usually prepare a bottle to bring some water. In the park, department store, or shrine, I can fill the bottle up from the water fountain. I can also buy a large bottle of water at a low price in a supermarket and pour it into my personal bottle.

Clothes: Many females like to shop for clothes or souvenirs in Japan. When enjoying the fun of shopping, we can always protect the environment at the same time. I notice an interesting phenomenon when I shop in Japan. Japanese

1-2︱Japanese household equipments are quite water-saving12

shops emphasize wrapping a lot and wrap goods with different kinds of elaborate and fancy materials. Although this can touch the heart of consumers, it is also a waste of resources. Therefore, I usually tell the shopkeeper to save the wrapping paper. I even brought my own shopping bag to save on paper bags.

Accommodation: High population density is another feature of Japan. Particularly, accommodation in Tokyo is exceptionally expensive as the price of real estate there is extremely high. Therefore, many backpackers share their information about clean and cheap backpacker hotels or short-term apartments on the Internet. If you don't mind sharing a room with backpackers from different parts of the world, you may enjoy an unexpected gain. When we choose a backpacker hotel or short-term apartment to cut accommodation expenses, we can meet friends from different parts of the world at the same time.

In Japan, all household equipment and furniture are miniaturized, and smart ideas to save space are seen everywhere. The toilet and bathroom facilities are what impress me most. In ordinary Japanese apartments or homes, the toilet and bathroom are separate parts of the premises. In the toilet, there is usually only one toilet bowl. If you want to wash your hands afterwards, you will need to go to the bathroom or kitchen, which is very inconvenient. Therefore, nearly all Japanese families have a multifunctional toilet bowl. Besides a two-stage flush, there is a tap on top of the tank. After pressing the flush, clean tap water will come out from the tap for users to wash their hands. The water will then flow into the tank for flushing next time. It is a great water-saving design.

In addition, without the need to add too much hot water inside, bathtub covers can keep the water warm for the whole family to wash in turns. In Taiwan where water resources are valuable, this may be a good idea to save water.

Transportation: In large Japanese cities, it is very convenient to travel by public transportation, such as the Metro, which reaches all parts of the city, and the bus with routes linking all stations. Therefore, I plan my transportation routes every day before departure, and I don't take taxis, which are very expensive, except in emergency situations. If you conduct good planning in advance, it costs about ¥2,000-¥3,000 for 5 days of transport in Tokyo, which is about NT$1,000. What other form of transportation can save energy and reduce carbon more than public transportation?

Start from small things, and you will find it very easy to be a smart backpacker who can cut expenses and protect the environment at the same time. After visiting Japan many times, I have seen many great energy-saving ideas. When you travel to Japan alone next time, don't forget to bring a reusable cup with you, and tell the shopkeeper when go shopping, "No need to wrap, thank you!"

DEF helps elementary schools in Taiwan and overseas save energy< Text by Pamela Huang/ DEF >

Delta Electronics Foundation (DEF) has been engaging in energy education for primary and secondary schools for a long time. At the end of last year it assisted partner schools in improving energy saving performance. After diagnosis and improvement, the electricity bill for Minfu Elementary School in Hsinchu City was reduced by 35% compared with the same period last year. From February to April, more than 15,000 kWh of electricity was saved. Compared with elementary schools with the same scale of electricity consumption, up to 40% of electricity was saved.

Energy saving improvements include three action plans: (1) peak consumption reduction: smart meters are used to monitor electricity loads so as to distribute electrical equipment use with reference to the difference between daytime and nighttime electricity rates; (2) saving water is saving energy: reduction of the start wattage of pumping motors, use of efficient water devices, and centralization of pumping activities at night; and (3) focus on the main targets: when lighting consumes one third of electricity, replace lighting fixtures with LED lighting fixtures as a top priority. The improvement plan not only helps schools to understand the status of energy consumption, it also provides an opportunity for teachers and students to participate in an environmental education course to realize the benefits of energy saving.

Apart from schools in Taiwan, DEF has helped Chinese schools in remote areas in northern Thailand to improve school lighting performance with Delta LED lights, so as to reduce electricity bills. DEF hopes to duplicate this successful experience in more schools.

Delta (Shanghai) holds its first energy education volunteer training program< Text by Nancy Chang/ Delta (Shanghai) >

Delta Environmental & Educational Foundation (DEEF) held the first energy education volunteer training program at Delta Shanghai R&D Center. DEEF invited senior Taiwanese environmental education expert Wulang Wang, senior volunteer Jinbei Lin of Cyntec, and DEF environmental education project manager TJ Chiu to show the interactive teaching methods. They also shared the teaching experiences accumulated in classrooms. On one training day, class was given in Shanghai Pudong Gonglu Elementary School to bring live experience to volunteers through onsite practice. After the two-day training program, volunteers all better understood the courses.

DEEF plans to open energy education courses at Shanghai Pudong Gonglu Elementary School this September. It hopes to help children to acquire environmental education knowledge through simple experiments and games, stimulate them to care about the Earth and the environment.
