Letter from the Vicar for Peel What did you do in the War?
We’re all quite used to hearing, reading and watching stories about war-torn Syria, about refugees tramping the length of Europe in search of a better life, and about the sufferings associated with conflict, wherever it arises. All this is so familiar that it’s almost no longer newsworthy. Only it is, because of the huge numbers affected and the degrading and heartless way in which such victims continue to be treated in our so-called civilised world.
The Omagh bombing, terrorist attacks in Paris, Tunisia and Kuwait, conflict in Ukraine: the names may change but it seems that the use of violence is somehow locked into our DNA. We happily talk about ‘progress’ but seem unable to resolve differences peacefully, even in the Church. It’s a very human story that Jesus would have found all too familiar. The voices around him two thousand years ago must have sounded much the same.
I suppose thoughts like this must have been in my mind recently as I walked through one of the battlefields of another war, far away in the South Atlantic. I had just come across one of the large Argentine mobile field kitchens left behind on Mt Longdon – semi-hidden but still complete with pots and pans, and trays in its long abandoned oven. It was so unexpected, so ordinary and ‘domestic’ a scene that it completely took my breath away, reminding me in a moment of real clarity that the ‘enemy’ is as human as we are. With the same likes and dislikes, the same aspirations and the same prejudices.
It’s a sobering thought, as we tread the pilgrim road to Easter. Because Jesus himself was a refugee as a child, was expected to fight the Romans – seen as the ‘enemy’ in Israel – never joined the ‘establishment’ and remained a supporter of outsiders throughout his life. Ultimately, he gave that life as a sacrifice for all, Jew and Gentile, Roman and Greek, you and me.
What does any of that have to do with us in Peel? Loving our neighbour might have something to do with it but, above all, we need to try and put ourselves in the other person’s shoes, to try and understand another point of view – someone we’ve just had an argument with; the friend we forgot to invite to the party; the son or daughter who doesn’t have any time for the Church; the refugee featured on the TV news; the unrepentant terrorist... Sometimes it seems almost impossible, yet Jesus somehow managed it and went on to change the world. After 1918 a favourite children’s question was, ‘Daddy, what did you do in the War?’ If we want to have a share in this world-changing experience of Easter, perhaps we should ask ourselves the same question.

On Sunday 21st February at Choral Evensong, Bishop Robert installed Monsignor Devine (the Roman Catholic Dean of the Island) as an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral with special interest in ecumenism.
Monsignor Peter John Devine was born in Liverpool in 1948 and was ordained in the Metropolitan Cathedral in 1973.
He served in Skelmersdale New Town for eight years before moving to Peru. With the Society of St James he worked in Chimbote then spent five years with the Qechua Indians in the Andes before moving to Lima as co-ordinator of the Society of St James.
Returning to the UK in 1990, he was appointed Director of St Joseph's College, Upholland, becoming a Trustee of the Archdiocese and Episcopal Vicar for Missionary Activity with additional responsibility for Clergy In-Service Training and Justice and Peace and also served as parish priest at St Aidan's, Huyton.
In 1990 he was appointed Churches' Officer for the North West to liaise between the mainstream Christian churches and North West regional government bodies. John reported to bishops and senior church leaders in the Anglican and Catholic dioceses as well as the Methodists, United Reformed Churches, the Baptist Union, the Salvation Army and the Society of Friends. John was instrumental in setting up the Northwest Forum of Faiths.
He is Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the Governing Council of Liverpool Hope University and has an MA in Theology from the University of Manchester.
In 1992 he was appointed a Prelate of Honour by Pope John Paul II and awarded an OBE in the 2011 New Years Honours List for services to inter faith relations in the North West.
Bishop Robert commenting following the installation said, 'I am pleased that John has joined the Cathedral Chapter and brings with him a great wealth of experience which we look forward to seeing enrich the life of the Cathedral and ecumenical relations across the Island.’
It was great to see the Cathedral full, the service was sung by the full Cathedral Choir, canticles by Herbert Brewer and the anthem, Locus Iste by Anton Bruckner.

Musical News Congratulations to Jack Oades, Cathedral organ scholar, on achieving his Associate of the Royal College of Organists (ARCO) through examination. The Royal College of Organists (or RCO), is a charity and membership organisation based in the United Kingdom, with members worldwide. Its role is to promote and advance organ playing and choral music, and it offers musical education and training for organists as well as choral directors. The College provides examinations in organ-playing, choral directing and organ-teaching; it runs an extensive education and outreach programme across the UK; and it maintains an internationally important library containing more than 60,000 titles concerning the organ, organ and choral music and organ playing. The Associateship Diploma (ARCO) demonstrates achievement in organ playing and supporting theoretical work. The examination Jack took consisted of organ playing, harmony and counterpoint, improvisation and music history. It is a great achievement and we are very proud of him. We have some amazing choral music planned across Holy week and Easter, it includes a full range of composers and styles. Palm Sunday Festal Evensong offers music by Palestrina and Holman. Maundy Thursday Choral Eucharist includes a wonderfully chromatic mass setting by Arthur Wills (formerly of Ely Cathedral) and to contrast the beauty of Tallis’ If Ye Love Me and Ubi Caritas to Gregorian Chant. Good Friday at 2pm is the Liturgy with the Choristers and includes the reproaches used at Iona Abbey and the seven last words by Handel. Easter Sunday Choral Eucharist is a real feast—Haydn’s Little Organ Mass and Wesley’s Blessed be the God and Father which features a wonderful solo by our long serving Head Chorister Peter Boussougou; Easter day is crowned with Festal Evensong by Schola, featuring music by Grayson Ives and our own Jack Oades! Do come and support your talented Cathedral choir.

Electoral Roll– Annual Revision
The annual church meetings will be held this year on 26th April. Before
that the Electoral Rolls of both the Parish and the Cathedral must be
revised. Please note that you do not need to reapply to be on the
Roll. That is only necessary when a new Roll is being prepared - every
6 years, with the next being in 2019.
Approximately 6 weeks before the annual meetings you will be informed
that the annual revision will begin on 29th March when both Electoral
Rolls will be displayed in church. Please check that your details are
correct and inform me of any alterations. Revised Rolls will then be
displayed on 9th April when no more additions or enrolments can be
made until after the AGMs.

Compline and Organ Reflection Jack Oades BA (Hons) Cantab, ARCO -the Cathedral’s Organ Scholar will give a free
meditative organ reflection following Compline on Monday 21st April (Monday
of Holy week).
The organ reflection will feature quiet music
appropriate for the beginning of Holy week,
it will include music by JS Bach, Langlais,
Vierne and an improvisation on ‘Forty days
and forty nights’ by Jack himself.

Champion, Dr Jill White, has
arranged for John Rutter to
come to the Island to hold
two ‘Come and Sing’ work-
shops at the Villa Marina on
Saturday 21 May 2016.
The morning session will be
from 11am to 12.45pm and will be for adults and young people aged 14 years old upwards. The af-
ternoon session will start at 2pm and end at 4.30pm and will include a
short break and is for adults and young people aged 12 years upwards.
Tickets cost £8 for adults and £2 for under 16s (ticket covers either or
both sessions). Spectators welcome (seating will be in balcony area)
and tickets for adults cost £5, under 16s are free, however, they must
obtain a spectator’s ticket and all children must be accompanied by an
adult. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who enjoys singing–
there is no requirement to be a member of a choir. Please help to
spread the word.

Deanery on Thursday 17 March 2016 finishing

Psalms Tour – 10 May 2016
Canadian singer/composer Sean Dayton and colleague James Palmer will be performing a concert at the Cathedral on Tuesday 10 May 2016 as part of an UK Psalms tour.
Sean explains:
The concert length will be approximately 100 minutes (two 40 minute sets with a 20 minute intermission in the middle). It will be themed around the Psalms (“A Psalms Experience”) and the performance will include original songs, instrumentals, congregational singing, short stories, video clips (with audio), and scripture readings. Our goal is to take people on a musical and spiritual journey through the Psalms.
There will not be an admission charge but there will be a retiring collection towards the costs incurred by Sean and James. Please encourage your friends to come and support them. To have a look at one of the songs use the following link.
