SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Third Sunday of Advent Monday: Our Lady of Guadalupe Tuesday: St. Lucy Wednesday: St. John of the Cross Friday: Las Posadas begins

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading The barren deserts will rejoice and flower. Tired bodies will receive strength. Aching hearts will be made glad (Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10). Psalm Lord, come and save us (Psalm 146). Second Reading Be patient, for the coming of the Lord is as sure as the rain (James 5:7-10). Gospel Tell of what you hear and see: The blind regain their vision, the crippled their movement, the deaf their hearing (Matthew 11:2-11).

A SEASON OF HOPE Today we can bask in the imagery that the Mass readings offer us. In particular, Isaiah’s vision of a parched land that blooms

with abundant flowers holds a message for each of us. Too often we are just like that parched land. We can allow ourselves to become absorbed in the waves of consumerism that grip so many. We look for fulfillment in the things that money can buy. Unfortunately, this

leaves us like parched land, thirsting for something that money can’t buy. This holy season has much to offer to quench our thirsts. In a word, this season offers hope. We are told that those who are ran-somed by God will know joy and gladness. For them, sorrow and

mourning will be no more. Let us place our hope in these promises.

LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES

Domingo: Tercer Domingo de Adviento Lunes: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Martes: Santa Lucía Miércoles: San Juan de la Cruz Viernes: Primer día de las Posadas

LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura ¡Estén fuertes, no teman!

Front Father Tom: Many of you have requested copies of the Indian prayer I used in my homily the Second Week of Advent. It’s from the Red Cloud Indian School of Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

You Should Know Page 6 Usted debe saber

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Gospel: Matthew 11:2-11 Adults: What would Jesus see to praise about you right now? Children: What good thing have you done so far during Advent to be like Jesus?

DID YOU KNOW?

Many children play hard, and can suffer bruises or injuries as a result. With some inju-ries, it’s hard to tell whether they are a result of too much roughhousing or abusive

treatment. Follow this guideline to assess a child’s bruising. Most accidental bruises are in common locations – knees, elbows, and foreheads. In contrast, bruises on a child’s neck or back could indicate potential mistreatment or abuse. Although kids should be

allowed to explore and learn their limits, suspicious bruises are warning signs that should not be ignored. For the full VIRTUS® article “Accidental vs. Suspicious Bruising,”

email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.

Isaias 35:10a

Third Sunday of Advent

Those whom the Lord has ransomed will return and enter Zion

singing, crowned with everlasting joy.

Isaiah 35:10a

A woman, clothed with the sun, daughter of the Most High God, proclaims the greatness of the Lord, the One who comes to dwell with us. She is the servant of the Lord. Today’s feast (Monday, December 12th) recalls the apparitions of Mary at the hill of Tepeyac from December 9-12, 1531, to the native con-vert, St. Juan Diego (December 9), known to the Aztecs as Tecoatlaxope (or de Guada-lupe in Spanish), meaning “she will crush the serpent of stone”; declared Patroness of the Americas by Pope Pius XII and raised to the rank of a Feast for all the countries of the Americas by Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, March 25, 1999.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
