Rules

The game objective is to reach the Empire State Building by answering 12 questions correctly.

You or your group play for higher and higher prize dollars as you answer questions correctly.

If you answer a question incorrectly, your taxi does not advance and you or your team receive an X.

Three incorrect answers (X’s) and the game is over.

It takes a 100-car freight train going 55 mph a mile or more to stop. This is equal to how many football fields?

At crossings where there is a stop sign or a signal on the other side of the tracks, how

does the driver determine if there is enough room (containment or storage area)

for the bus?

B. There’s always room following a crossing – the roads are designed that way.

A. Know the length of your bus. If you have any doubt, don’t take a chance. If it won’t fit, don’t commit.

C. Get out of the bus and measure.

D. Make a careful guess.

Page 9: Start Game A PowerPoint Training Game Start Icebreaker

Each driver needs to know the length of their bus and the size of the storage or containment area on the other side of the crossing.

So, know the length of you bus and add an extra 15 feet for safety!

Remember, the train will be 3 feet wider than the rails on both sides.

What causes drivers to misjudge whether it is safe to cross the tracks?

B. Trains change speed unexpectedly.

D. An optical illusion fools the eye in judging the distance and speed of the train.

C. They think the train can stop for them if needed.

A. The train’s warning horns cannot be heard.

Page 11: Start Game A PowerPoint Training Game Start Icebreaker

Speed PerceptionTrains appear to be traveling much slower than their actual

speed because of their size and mass; much like a jet looks like they are almost hanging in mid air even though their final approach speed is over 150 mph.

A. Stop at this sign.

B. Slow down and prepare to stop at a railroad crossing.

C. Look and listen for trains. If you see one, decide if you need to stop or not.

D. No trains cross here.

Page 13: Start Game A PowerPoint Training Game Start Icebreaker

Advance Warning Sign

The round yellow sign, called an Advance Warning Sign, warns drivers that the road intersects with railroad tracks ahead. This sign tells us to slow down and be prepared to stop if a train is approaching.

A school bus approaching a railroad crossing always has the right of way.

30292827262524232221201918171615141312111009080706050403020100StartTimerStartTimer

B. True

A. False

C. It depends on the situation.

Page 15: Start Game A PowerPoint Training Game Start Icebreaker

False – Trains always have the right-of-way at railroad crossing. The laws of physics make it impossible for a train to stop quickly enough to prevent a collision

If the bus stalls on a track, never try to restart the bus before evacuating the students.

30292827262524232221201918171615141312111009080706050403020100StartTimerStartTimer

B. Try starting the bus three times, then evacuate the students.

C. If the bus stalls, evacuate the students immediately. Look for an emergency notification sign posted near the crossing to call and report your problem, or call 911.

A. Contact your dispatch office so they can notify the railroad, then evacuate the students.

D. Call the local police and then evacuate the students.

Evacuate Bus First!

Then look for this sign, an Emergency Notification Sign (ENS), posted at or near a highway-rail grade crossing, lists a telephone number along with the crossing's US DOT number and is used to notify the railroad of an emergency or warning device malfunction. (Image credit: MUTCD)

A railroad crossing is marked with a crossbuck sign, which should be considered the same as a YIELD sign.

All motor vehicles should YIELD to trains.

Lowered gates and flashing red lights mean a train is approaching. Do not cross!

Lowered Gate and Flashing Red Lights

Flashing Red Lights – with or without bells – warn of an approaching train. When the red lights are flashing, a train is approaching. Stop and wait for the train to pass, then proceed when it is clearly safe to do so.

Flashing Red Lights – with bells and gates – warn that a train is approaching. It is illegal to go around lowered gates.

If signals are malfunctioning at the crossing, you should:

B. Do not cross. Wait for a properly identified railroad flagman or law enforcement office to flag you across.

D. All of the above.

C. Find another route if help does not arrive.

A. Contact your dispatch office. Notify the railroad about the problem.

Page 27: Start Game A PowerPoint Training Game Start Icebreaker

Malfunctioning Signals

Only a police officer or properly-identified railroad flagman can direct you across a railroad crossing with malfunctioning signals.

If there is no official flagman/police officer and you believe the signals are malfunctioning, do NOT proceed.

If the gates remain down after a train passes through a railroad crossing with more than one set of tracks, it is a malfunction.

When there is more than one set of tracks, another train could be approaching from either direction, hidden by the first train.

At a multiple track crossing waiting for a train to pass, watch out for a second train on the other tracks, approaching from either direction.

Multiple Track Sign

The number on a multiple track sign indicates the number of tracks present at that crossing.

A train can avoid a collision if the locomotive engineer applies the brakes as soon as he sees a vehicle stalled on the tracks.

30292827262524232221201918171615141312111009080706050403020100StartTimerStartTimer

False

It depends on the weather.

Page 35: Start Game A PowerPoint Training Game Start Icebreaker

By the time a locomotive engineer can see a school bus on the tracks, it is too late to be able to avoid a collision. Trains cannot stop quickly, even after applying emergency brakes.
