Everyone loves Santa Claus, or Père Noël, en français. La Visite de Père Noël is a reading and a collection of four-skill activities that are effective for novice level French learners of all ages. Tracing Santa’s path from his sleigh to a house on Christmas Eve is a great way to learn Christmas vocabulary and other basics in French. A vivid context like a simple Santa Claus story is what beginning learners need to retain new words. Even kindergarteners can learn French Christmas vocabulary, pronounce it, and use it with ease, while much older students will benefit from the other French basics in the reading and activities.

The Oral Action Series

Oral language is learned before the printed word. The Action Series is a sequence of simple sentences that is easy for learners to understand & remember. Read it out loud to them several times . Research proves that students grasp and retain second language vocabulary best when it is presented in short and simple sentences. As you read the series aloud, do animated gestures of the verbs, or action words, when possible. Using a sequential Action Series with plenty of pre-teaching and post-listening or reading activities ensures that the language sinks in.

Card Games for the Picture Flash Cards

• Simple matching. The learner matches the picture to the word . • Pick & Describe: a player chooses a card & keeps it a secret. He or she then

describes it in French & any others need to guess it. • Path of Pictures: Place the cards in a path on the floor or on top of a table. A

volunteer needs to say the French name of the picture correctly, and may the volunteer who names the most win!

• Bingo or Loto. Kids create individual 9 X 9 boards with the un-labeled pictures that they have cut out. An adult calls each French word or phrase. Students turn over cards as they are called. The first with 3 in a row must call Loto, and then name each in French.

• Mémoire. Create a memory board on a surface with the pictures and the words placed in a grid, and turned face down. Learners then play memory .

Listening Strategies (Reading for older children)

• Students need to hear or read the story several times and in a variety of ways: silently, out loud, taking turns, to a partner, and acting it out.
