This would be a good place to insert a short

paragraph about your organization. It might include the purpose of the organization, its mission, founding date, and a brief history.

You could also include a brief list of the types of products, services, or programs

your organization offers, the geographic area covered (for example, western U.S. or

European markets), and a profile of the

types of customers or members served.

It would also be useful to include a contact name for readers who want more infor-

mation about the organization.

Nikhel Sachdev from Year 6 (2012 batch) was the proud

recipient of the 2012 Singapore Police Force Book Prize. This

prestigious award is presented to students with excellent

GIC Young Leader Award 2012

Earlier in the year, the school nominated its top stu-

dents for Government of Singapore Investment Corporation

(GIC) Young Leader Award. Each student had to write a short

essay and the shortlisted students were then invited to GIC

where they had to carry out a group presentation based on the

essay submitted.

After the stringent selection process, 3 students were

presented with the GIC Young Leader Award: Keisha Ong

from 5.10 and Moira Low and Lim Shu En Anne from 5.12.

On 21 July, four teams of Year 5s represented our school to com-

pete in the International Trade Challenge. They were given two

days to develop a market entry strategy. They outshined at least 70

others to enter the finals. All four teams impressed the judges with

their well-rehearsed presentations and spontaneous answers, but

team ACSellence (Brennan Foo and Joel Chow), as well as team

SkinnyDip (Daryl Ng and Elias Wee), stood out and were selected to

represent Singapore in the Asia Pacific finals held in Hong Kong.

Both teams sailed past the preliminary rounds to present at

the grand finals. Team ACSellence impressed the judges to launch

Ananda Resorts. Team SkinnyDip used a humorous skit and in-

depth technical diagrams to analyze their affordable solar cooker.

By God's grace, team ACSellence came in first place, marking the

first-ever victory for Singapore.

The teams would like to thank Madam Angela Ong for her tireless

guidance, the senior administration for their support, chaperones

JA personnel Madam Marissa Lim and Madam Ng Hau Yee for their

care, the parents for their encouragement and last but not least

God, who makes all victories possible for the school.

SPECIAL REPORT

FedEx Express Junior Achievement International

Trade Challenge 2012 Asia Pacific Finals

The Australian Mathematics Competition was introduced in 1978 and has since become the largest single event on the Australian Education Calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks, on the same day in about 40 countries throughout the Pacific and South East Asia and beyond.

Each year a limited number of medals are awarded to students. The number allocated is equivalent to at least a standard achieved by 1 in 10,000 Australian students. These are awarded to students who are outstanding within their region (Australian State or Territory or other country), within their year group and internationally.

Generally no more than three such students can be deemed to be outstanding within a region and year group.

Therefore, the Mathematics Department is very pleased that Gao Yuan of Class 3.11 has done exceptionally well to receive the 2012 Medal Award bestowed by the Australian Mathematics Foundation (AMF) Department which administers the Australian Mathematics Competition.

After spending immense effort in projects, our team, consisting of Luke Chng, Toh Wei Soong and James Ahn, represented ACS (Independent) in a series of national competitions through 2012.

In the Young Innovators’ Fair in September 2012, we were one of the six teams, out of 80 IvP teams from various Secondary schools, selected to showcase projects through a stage presentation to 18 schools and Ms Sim Ann, the Senior Parliamentary secretary for Education and Law. In October, we were shortlisted once again to compete in the final stage of the SAFE pro-gramme organized by MHA.

In InnoFest 2012, we were awarded Silver by Mr S Iswaran, Minister in Prime Minister’s office and Second Minister of Home Affairs and Trade and Industry. Finally, we will participate in the prestigious Tan Kah Kee Young In-ventors Award 2013. Our project involves modifying the Singapore Street Lighting System to make it more energy efficient and safer. By implementing LDR dark sensors with the use of invertors, we can turn on a cluster of street-lights only after it turns dark.

These accomplishments were the culmination of sheer hard work and perseverance, together with the support and guidance from our teachers, mentors, parents and ultimately, God.

On October 25, after almost 30 years of loyal service, ACS (I) bade farewell to our beloved deputy principal Mrs Fanny Tan. The senior administration, teachers, students, and the family of Mrs Tan all came together as an ACS family to celebrate and honour her dedicated years of service. The thanksgiving service began with prayers and blessings for Mrs Tan. Mr Hodge, our principal, and Mr Seow, president of the board of governors, also delivered poignant tributes to Mrs Tan.

There were several performances in honour of Mrs Tan, starting with a beautiful rendition of ‘Stand by Me’ by members of the 7th Student Council, followed by heartfelt tibutes read by three teachers from the English department, with whom Mrs Tan had worked very closely dur-ing her time at ACS.

The highlight of the service was a combined choral tribute comprising teachers and students. It was the first of its kind in this school. They came together to deliver a heartfelt version of ‘Go Forth With a Song’, which made for a fitting blessing for Mrs Tan’s future. The service ended with Mrs Tan’s final speech to the school.

Mrs Fanny Tan’s Farewell

“GO

FORTH

WITH

A

SONG”

It was with much sadness that the school bade farewell to our Deputy Principal Ms Yvonne Lim in November 2012.

Ms Lim joined ACSI as Gifted Education (GE) Department Head on 1 January 1990. Highly dedicated in nurturing the school’s high-ability students, her vision was for these students to not only attain academic excellence, but, more importantly, become men of character

with a heart to serve the school, nation and community. She inspired the GE teachers in this vision as she actively organized, promoted and led activities and initiatives that maximised these students’ learning and development.

On 1 January 2006, Ms Lim was appointed Deputy Principal. She was passion-ate in championing ACSI’s vision and mission. She oversaw the implementation of signature programmes and played a key role in the school’s bid to attain the Singapore Quality Award (SQA) in 2008. Throughout her career, Ms Lim demonstrated excellent work ethics. As an inspiration and blessing, she was a true servant leader.

As Ms Lim ends her period with ACSI and returns to the Ministry of Education, we want to wish her with God’s richest blessings and favour as she embarks on a new journey.

Ms Lim, we will miss you!

Farewell Ms Yvonne Lim

Turn to your yearbook and look closely at some of the most important pic-tures. Look carefully. You may miss out this very special person at first glance but look closer, and you will see the Iron Lady of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). Look back. Think about whether your ACSian experience could have been complete without this magnificent lady. You may not realize it, but she was there with you at every crossroad, standing somewhere discreetly. She looked after you. So here we stand – the school, the boarding school, friends, family, past and present – saluting to this Iron Lady. Although it aches our heart to bid her goodbye, new shores await her, and she needs to grace more places, people and pupils with her presence and guidance. Her love and care will be so very dearly missed. Ms Lim, we hope you will continue to shape more lives, as you have ours. Now, as you set your sails and embrace new shores, we will be right here, wishing you the best forev-er more!

lady who is dependable,

and a dear friend who

fits the proverbial

expression 'a friend in

need is a friend indeed'.

We have gone through

both good and tough

times together and she

is one person I know I

and frankly share my

thoughts with. I will

miss her!”

Three t imes a lady—Ms Yvonne Lim’s Farewell

“Thanks for the times

That you've given me

The memories are all in my mind

And now that we've come

To the end of our rainbow

There's something

I must say out loud

You're once ,twice ,

Three times a lady

And I love you”

‘‘Ms. Lim may be a quiet personality – however, in

her love language of service, she is anything but

quiet. She serves with genuine care and concern for

our school, our students and teachers. She is

someone who believes there is good

in everyone – and she will draw the best from each

person she encounters or works with. Ms. Lim is

always ready to help, to contribute and to be part of

the solution, rather than just live with or moan about

a problem.’’

- - Mr. Winston Hodge

So went the lyics for the song “Three times a lady” by Lionel Richie, a song which encapsulates our feel-ings for Ms Yvonne Lim. The lyrics were dedicated to her in a choir by the members of her resident hall, Tay Eng Soon Hall, in a school assembly to mark the end of her years of meritorious service and her de-parture from the ACS family for higher calling. This event was part and parcel of a farewell ceremony for Ms Yvonne Lim, whom we all recognise as our beloved former Deputy Principal. During her time of service, Ms Yvonne Lim was respected as an iron lady who had never compromised on discipline, but was also loved as a caring matron with a nurturing presence, working to instill values in staff and students alike. She treated us all like the children she never had, bringing her own meaning to our concept of the ACS family.

Her wisdom and experience were instrumental to the organisation and running of the school, with her many years of service attested to by the video montage of her many sweet moments.

She will be remembered for the sacrifices she had made, and her extenstive contributions to our school’s colourful history and her life’s work in raising fine young ladies and gentlemen to reach their full potential in life.

And with her leaving, we sorrowfully turn the page into a new chapter of ACSian history.

A pat on the back for a job well done.

A heartfelt prayer for Miss Yvonne Lim

It has been an honour and privilege to have known Mrs Fanny Tan and have her as our Deputy Principal all these years. She is the embodiment of class, courage and creativity.

Joining in 1981, Mrs Tan held many posts in ACS, including Senior Assistant, Head of Level 4 and then as Deputy Principal. She has dedicated 28 years of her life to ACS (Independent).

Her forte is in English language and literature. In 1997, she was in the forefront during the writing and publication of “On His Wings – A Decade of Independ-ence” and in 2009, she again supervised the publication of “On His Wings Soar-ing – 20 Years On”.

As an arts enthusiast, she spearheaded many drama productions, including: “Oliver” at the Victoria Theatre in 1982; “The Crucible” in 1985; “The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ “in 1988 and “Godspell the musical” in 2002. She initiated the Festival of Arts in 1992.

You are starting a new journey and an exceptional chapter of your life. May your days be filled with elation and triumph. We thank you for your integrity and dedication and congratulate you on all your accomplishments.

Mrs Tan, ACS wishes you a Happy Retirement.
