6TH ANNUAL JONVILLE TEAM SAN ELIJOHILLS GARAGE SALE AND CHARITY EVENTSaturday, May 14, 2011: 7-11am, San Elijo Hills Garage Sale organized by the Jonville Team. Visit www.SEHgaragesale.com for more info and to register.

I started at re:form three years ago, when I was 57. Up until that point

I had mostly walked for exercise and I had never even been on the bike. Today

I am strong and full of energy...which I get to use with my grandchildren. It ’s

made such a big difference in my life! – Fereshteh Yahyapour : La Cost

Exercise had always been an integral part of my life but somehow on the

journey, I lost it. re:form not only helped me find it back but has challenged

me in ways I never knew were possible. – Shawna Esarey : San Elijo Hills

Four Words…I Love re:form fitness. I have always been an active person and I

have tried lots of avenues to up my level of fitness from traditional gym

memberships, to one-on-one personal training, to large group classes and

“boot camps”, and nothing compares. – Whitney Fields : Carlsbad

My goal was to lose weight, maybe even fit into a smaller jean size. Initially,

I started working out several times a week and every week the scale would go

down and the muscles grew. It was amazing to see my body change.

– Susan : San Elijo Hills

After a year of physical therapy with minimal results to address my loss of

muscle mass and lower back problems. It ’s been seven months and I can truly

say that re:form has changed my life. I not only lost 11% of my body fat, I can

now actually pick up my daughter without the fear of hurting my back now

that my core strength is so much better. – Cindy Davis : San Elijo Hills

re:form is not just the name it is what they do. My body is becoming the body I

always wanted but did not know how to get. I am mid 40’s and have no prob-

lem jumping into any activity. Best workout, never the same, results are off the

charts! – James Reeve : San Elijo Hills

With Earth Day and Spring, April becomes the month we turn our attention to Mother Earth. What impact do we have on the planet and what role can we take in preserving the natural (and not so natural) resources that we tend to take for granted? Are there things we could do to make our households more effi-cient? To save energy?

As you ponder this question and look around for ways to improve your efficiency at home this month, it’s also worth taking a quick look at where you waste energy. Not electrical or natural gas….but your own physical and mental energy. Are you using your energy wisely? Are you investing in making yourself feel your best? Or are you running on borrowed time, always exhausted and wondering where you’ll get the next boost of energy you need to tackle that next thing on your ‘to-do list’?

Most of us moved to San Elijo Hills because we loved the community feel, the walkability of the neigh-borhoods, the family-friendly vibe, the hiking trails and the special neighborhood events. But, for many, once you get established here, you find yourself too busy and too exhausted to really njoy it.

editor’s cornerkAren SmITH

Wasting EnergySo, this month, I encourage you think about how

you’re wasting energy and what you could do to con-serve some of it to invest in those things that you value about living in San Elijo Hills? Maybe you can head out to our annual holiday egg hunt on April 16! Or support the Country Fair at San Elijo Elementary on April 30! Maybe you can walk over to the Town Square and take advantage of the special offers you’ll find in the Buy Local insert this month.

In this issue, you’ll find some great ideas from your neighbors about: how to stop wasting energy when it comes to your fitness, how to learn the signs of kindergarten readiness, and tips for dealing with tantrums (which by the way work not only for kids, but for adults, too!)

So, don’t waste your energy this month. Sit down, kick back and enjoy this issue of The Fountain – packed with information and ideas that will help you use your time, money and energy more efficiently. And, if you have an idea, article or photo you’d like to contribute to a future issue, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

HoA meeting

The next meeting of the San Elijo Hills Community Association board will take place on April 7 at 5:30 pm at San Elijo Elementary School.

SeeS Community Service ProjectEvery year San Elijo Elementary School runs a Community Service

Project leading up to the Country Fair. This year, because the fair theme is “From Sea to Shining SEES” they will be supporting our military. There is a Marine Corps helicopter squadron - HMM163 - that left for a 7 month deployment on the USS Boxer in late February and students will be col-lecting items to help the children and families while their family member is away. Each grade will be concentrating on different areas of the squadron.

Kindergarten and first grade will collect items to help the 200 children in the squadron celebrate birthdays during the deployment. Second and third grade will collect items to help the 200 Moms celebrate Mother’s Day. Fourth and fifth grade will collect items for care packages for the 110 single Marines on their return.

A full list of suggested donation items can be found at www.sanelijoele-mentary.org. Students will be collecting donations at school through April 30 and a donation station will be set up at the Country Fair so that the whole community can get involved.

Let’s show the members of HMM 163 and their families how much we appreciate their service and sacrifice for our country!

Sidewalk Sunday Was a Great Success! The first Buy Local Sidewalk event was a huge success! Local busi-

nesses displayed their services at 40+ tables throughout the Town Square. Peppertree Hills Café offered free cookies and appetizers. Shop owners in the Town Square brought tables out to the sidewalk and offered great specials. Residents enjoyed a quick massage in front of French’s Nail Salon

and kids painted free tiles in front of A Colorful Universe. Shoppers enjoyed $5 off in Postal Annex and discount brand name shopping in Hometown Realty. To top it off, attendees enjoyed samples from Yogurt Utopia and a dollar a slice pizza from Hendo’s. Attendees also had the chance to meet the new orthodontist at The Hills Family Dentistry and

to enjoy food from the SD Street Eats Food Truck owned by a resident here in San Elijo Hills.

It was a great kick-off to the San Elijo Hills Foundation’s efforts to bring everyone together to strengthen our community’s commitment to ‘buy local first’. Thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored and volunteered to make this event so successful! A special thank you goes out to Copper Creek Realty Group for sponsoring the jumpie and DR Horton and Lennar for sponsoring the jumpie, facepainting and balloons for the kids. Davies Electric donated a generator and the DJ fromThirty Five Productions discounted his services for the cause. It was definitely a team effort! We can’t wait to see you all out at the next Buy Local event scheduled for Saturday, May 7!

CHriS orlando: City CounCil Last month, Mayor Jim Desmond delivered his annual State of the City Address before a crowd of more than a hundred and thirty at City Hall. The Mayor’s speech touched several familiar topics, noting the progress San Marcos has made in ensuring public safety, improving quality of life by

growing and supporting our incredible park system, managing our traffic concerns, maintaining strong City finances, and planning for our future. What set this year’s address apart was the Mayor’s focus on not only what the City has done, but also the many great things San Marcos residents have accomplished by working together as a community.

Public SafetyAs the Mayor noted, public safety remains a top priority for the City.

Our fire department had another notable year, responding to more than 7,000 calls with a medical response time average around 4 minutes and 46 seconds. Our structure fire response time was 5 minutes and 18 seconds – about a minute faster than our rate last year - both exceptional times. The fire department also put into service a state-of-the-art mobile emergency operations center that greatly enhances the city’s emergency operations ability during significant events.

In terms of law enforcement, San Marcos continues to contract for the highest level of law enforcement personnel of any San Diego Sheriff ’s contract city. Working with a budget of $13.7 million, the 65 senior volunteers, 8 professional staff, 6 reserve deputies and 95 sworn officers at the San Marcos Sheriff ’s Station keep a strategic focus on reducing crime. The City’s gang injunction continues to reduce gang-related crime. In 2006 there were 242 reported gang cases in San Marcos. In 2010, there were just 76. The sheriff ’s department recently formed a Gang Enforcement Team that will keep pressure on gang members and bring gang education to our schools in a long-term strategy to break the cycle of gang membership.

Parks and Community Services Recognizing the importance that parks play in the quality of life in

San Marcos, the Mayor highlighted significant additions to our park sys-tem in the last year, including the doubling in size of Mission Sports Park, the re-opening of Civic Center and Buelow Parks, and the relocation of the San Marcos Historical Society to its new location in Heritage Park at Walnut Grove Park. Looking ahead, the coming year will bring the con-struction of the 54-acre South Lake Park, which will include trails, fishing docks, boat rentals, concessions and picnic areas. The park will eventually connect via trail to Discovery Lake Park.

All of these parks illustrate how much the community of San Marcos is committed to preserving as much open space as possible and creating more recreational opportunities for our residents and visitors. The quality of our park system is a result of the input and feedback from San Marcos residents regarding what they value in our community.

Traffic ManagementTraffic management in San Marcos is another major area of focus.

The Mayor highlighted some significant plans on the books to help ease congestion around San Marcos.

Several improvement projects are planned along SR-78 in San Marcos as well as the transition interchange between Interstate 15 and SR-78. A new bridge at Nordahl Road and SR-78 will be the first major step towards relief and will significantly improve that interchange. The project will get under way this summer and should be complete within 18 months. The City will also make improvements to the intersection of Nordahl and Montiel Road to help with the new bridge interchange. Just east of the new bridge, Caltrans will widen the connector on-ramp from the 15 to the 78 and add a fifth westbound lane on the 78 between the end of the 15 connector and Nordahl Road. Finally, this summer construction will begin on a $10 million dollar project to add an eastbound auxiliary lane on the 78 between Woodland Parkway and Nordahl Road and help alleviate the County’s worst bottleneck.

Mayor Delivers State of the City AddressEach of these projects is a result of strong collaboration between local,

regional and state agencies. Together, they will significantly ease our traffic concerns.

Fiscal StrengthEnsuring the fiscal stability in San Marcos has been the Council’s pri-

mary objective during the Recession. The Mayor provided a progress report on city finances, noting that while revenues have remained relatively flat over the previous year, sales tax seems to be rebounding from the previous two-year decline and city’s rental income, which accounts for 15 percent of total revenue, is slightly higher than last year at this time.

Despite uncertain economic waters, the city has maintained a high level of fiscal responsibly, trimming its operating budget, freezing all non-essential operating expenditures and certain capital outlays, deferring vacant positions indefinitely, conducting a comprehensive salary study to bring salaries in line with market value, and tackling pension reform during the next round of negotiations with employees. As the Mayor noted, we will continue to practice these principles while providing the responsive, quality services for residents.

Planning for our FutureThe Mayor also provided a status of several significant efforts underway

that will define the San Marcos of tomorrow. The General Plan Advisory Committee, or GPAC, has held more than more than 20 community meet-ings gathering input from residents regarding an update of the city’s general plan. Their work will be completed this year. Construction will begin soon on the University District, a 194-acre planned smart-growth development near Cal State San Marcos that will be a beautiful mix of retail, office and dining establishments, along with a complement of residential housing units. And efforts continue to secure the environmental approvals for the San Marcos Creek District, which outlines plans to create a downtown for San Marcos on 214-acres along San Marcos Creek. In addition to these projects, we have invested a significant amount of time and money into the revital-ization of the City’s Richmar neighborhood, which has made a significant positive impact on the quality of life in that community.

San Marcos ChampionsIn each of these areas, the Mayor noted that it is residents’ input, volun-

teerism and devotion to our city that has made progress possible. To high-light these contributions, he invited each of the Councilmembers to select a “San Marcos Champion.” I was very pleased to honor Alison Driessen, chairman of the San Marcos Senior Services Foundation, for her work sup-porting seniors in San Marcos. It is the work of residents like Alison who truly help to make our city a great place to live.

Brandon and Melissa Fowler are among the newest residents of San Elijo Hills. By the time you read this article, there will be one more Fowler in the family. When we talked with Brandon – Melissa was due to deliver their first daughter any minute!

Brandon and Melissa will be familiar faces in the community, not only as residents, but also because Brandon is an orthodontist who be setting up shop at The Hills Family Dentistry. Brandon will be available once a week at The Hills Family Dentistry – and he hopes to eventually grow his practice so that San Elijo Hills becomes ‘home base’ for him. Imagine the convenience of stopping in for your regular adjustments right here in the neighborhood!

Brandon grew up in San Diego. He attended USD and then moved to Los Angeles to attend USC for dental school and his residency. While there, he met Melissa who is from Redondo Beach. They knew they want-ed to make their way back to San Diego – it was only a matter of where.

They really fell in love with North County and when they found San Elijo Hills, they knew it was perfect for them. One day they bumped into the Martins (from The Hills Family Dentistry) at Yogurt Utopia. They got to talking and the rest is history.

Brandon and Melissa love living here in San Elijo Hills because they love being outdoors and hiking. They enjoy having access to the trails and they also enjoy traveling, but for now, they will be busy settling into their new home and getting used to being first-time parents. Child NutritionThe Child Nutrition Services Department in the San Marcos Unified

School District likes to do things the hard way. Rather than just approach-ing nutrition education on the back of school lunch menus or on the walls of the cafeteria, they decided to develop their own project-based curriculum around student groups called Nutrition Advisory Council’s (NACs). Each school site has one or two teachers who have been selected as NAC Advisors. At San Elijo Elementary School, Mrs. Christina Kaiser has enthusiastically accepted the role as NAC advisor for her 3rd grade class.

The all-new NAC curriculum was developed utilizing bits and pieces of existing curriculum from various sources aligned with the California Content Standards. What makes the NAC curriculum so unique is the integration of monthly projects based on different concepts to enhance the wellness environment of the school.

The best way to describe how the curriculum works is to provide an example. During the month of October we introduced a lesson about whole grains. Mrs. Kaiser’s 3rd grade students learned what whole grains were, what kinds of foods to find them in, and how to identify them on a nutri-tion fact label. After the lesson, the NAC students were asked to sample two grain products. One of the products was an enriched grain bun currently being served in the school cafeteria. The other was a 100% whole grain bun with no artificial flavors or sweeteners.

After the lesson and sampling, the NAC students agreed that the 100% whole grain product tasted better and was healthier for them. The project for the month evolved into a school wide “Whole Grain Challenge,” and the objective of the NAC students was to convince their peers to choose the

chicken sandwich served on the 100% whole grain bun. In doing so, Mrs. Kaiser’s students began to develop strategies to market the challenge to their peers including creating posters and speaking at Friday Flag Salute. The response to the marketing project was overwhelming. We identified that schools that had an active NAC group were able to influence the consump-tion of whole grain bread while the control schools without NACs did not serve a significant amount of whole grain bread.

This opportunity allowed the students to apply the knowledge that they gained through the nutrition lesson to make a positive impact within their school food environment. Furthermore, it enabled the school food service environment to increase new food acceptability through peer marketing: a win-win situation! As a result, the school nutrition program has already begun phasing out the enriched grain buns in the cafeteria and will be going 100% whole grain following spring break!

Of our 19 school sites, we currently have 14 active NAC groups that are piloting the curriculum. We have been able to utilize them to increase acceptability of whole grains, enhance our salad bar and, most recently, develop a successful cooked-from-scratch vegetarian chili recipe. Building a bridge between child nutrition and the classroom is not an easy task. In a matter of months, we have been able to document the success of the curriculum through increased numbers in school lunch participation and surveys with students and cafeteria staff. Nobody said change was going to be easy!

Is it time to increase your exposure to global investment opportunities?Your portfolio, like that of many U.S. investors, may have a domestic bias. Merrill Lynch believes that investors seeking growth may want to consider looking beyond U.S. companies. By investing globally, you could benet from increased potential for return, reduced portfolio risk levels and broader diversication to assets that do not move in tandem with U.S. investments.

Merrill Lynch can help you: Understand opportunities for growth—at home and abroad Think strategically about your current asset allocation Consider a greater allocation to global investments Take advantage of potential market opportunities

What and How Our Schools Teach Students about Responsibility

pointS FroM a prinCipal – douglaS Hall

Nurturing responsible students who become responsible citizens is the ambition and the dream of parents everywhere. It is also the goal and the vision behind the education experiences planned for students in every school.

As educators, we approach the task of developing responsible citizens very seriously. Responsible citizenship is not taught to students as a skill to be used only after they become adults. Our “I am Responsible for Myself ’ mantra is lifted up as an important element of character to be used and strengthened today and for every day of their lives.

How does a school go about developing responsibility in students? What methods and materials are a part of the teaching-learning process? The answers to these questions lie in an examination of the climate, feeling tone, and curriculum of the school. Responsible citizenship must be mod-eled by the faculty and all staff members. It is reinforced in our responses to students’ efforts and actions, and directly taught and expected in the daily instruction of content subjects.

In today’s society, young people need role models more than ever before who uphold responsible actions, diligent work ethic, and positive attitudes. They model for students what it means to be responsible for doing their job and accountable for their actions. They model responsibility for their dress and the opinions of others, and show respect and care for the property of others. They model responsibility for abiding by the laws of society and the policies of the school and more than ever what is happening on the internet and the social network. In short, the adults in our schools offer examples of what it means to be responsible citizens.

Responsibility is directly taught from the day your student enters school until graduation and beyond. Each student is taught to take responsibility for his or her possessions and to keep them orderly- all the while respecting the materials that belong to others in the classroom. Each student is taught to be accountable for his or her obligations, whether this involves them counting the students who receive morning milk in their kindergarten class or handing in their final senior English term paper on its due date. Each obligation and or event is set up to build on developing responsibility. Then compliance with that action is expected and reinforced when expectations are met.

Personal responsibility is best developed in a climate or culture where it is the expectation to be responsible and appropriate age level actions are encouraged and supported to increase responsibility in ALL of our stu-dents. Courtesy, fairness, and respect for differences encourage the growth of personal responsibilities in students. If a student is treated with courtesy, he or she will assume a degree of responsibility for treating others with that same courtesy. If a student is dealt with fairly when he or she makes a mistake or does something wrong, that student will be more inclined to take responsibility for his or her actions. If students are expected to be respectful and are themselves treated with respect, then they can see, firsthand how a responsible citizen behaves.

Nurturing students toward becoming responsible adults requires con-stant attention to the task. Our students SEE everything we do and say both at home and at school. School Personnel, like parents, are committed to this challenge. Meeting our goal of producing world-class students and strengthening our nation for the future depends on our ability to mount a cooperative effort - “WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER”

Spanish and technology

Spanish and Technology go hand-in-hand in Mrs. Nancy Murray’s Spanish class. In conjunction with having Mrs. Murray’s English classes work on posting written pieces to Mahara (an Enhancing Education Through Technology grant piece), she was able to utilize the netbooks for her Spanish class. Mrs. Murray modeled her Spanish “I Am/Yo Soy” poem, gave students time to create their own poems, which they posted to Moodle/Mahara. They also created colorful, hard copy products, which are now on display on the inner library windows. ¡Felicidades a la maestra Murray y sus alumnus!

SEMS Friendship garden

Spring is the time for the awak-ening of gardens and SEMS now has it’s own garden of sorts – the SEMS Friendship Garden, where students from Mrs. Shannon Dudley’s class and ASB students work together, under the guidance of Mrs. Karen Warner, plant-ing vegetables seeds and caring for the seedlings as they grow. Not only will student harvest fresh vegetables, but will reap the benefits of shared worked and collaboration. The San Elijo Middle School Garden Society, a volun-teer group of staff, came together to donate seeds, tools, and time to unload soil into raised planting beds, built by Karen and Ray Warner. Thank you to all, especially our generous anonymous donor, who provided funding for the initial start-up projects, and the wonderful SEMS grounds/facilities people who helped this project along!

I felt somewhat guilty intruding on Taylor’s time with his mom when I stopped by to interview them and check out their progress so far. Taylor is six and attends school at SEES. He was clearly proud of what they have produced so far, but even more so, you could tell he enjoyed the time outdoors one-on-one with his mom.

Susanna is using all kinds of natural deterrents for pests, birds, etc. – from pinwheels to marigolds, cosmos and their friend the praying mantis.

We’ll check in with Susanna from time to time to see how her gar-den grows! If you’re participating in the garden and want to share what you’re doing, we’d love to hear about it. Just shoot us a note at [email protected].

San Elijo Hills Community GardensResidents are quickly set-

tling into their community garden plots. The Association received a fantastic response from residents interested in par-ticipating and quickly expanded the program to include two areas in the community. All of these spots are curently sold out, but being the nosey neighbors that we are, we stopped by to check it out! It’s so much fun to see what people are doing and to see the personalities reflected in each garden space.

Susanna Pagan is one such resident. Susanna is a landscape designer who lives in San Elijo Hills and is very well versed in plants and horticulture. She already grows a number of edible plants at home, but was excited to expand into the community garden. She and her son, Taylor, go to the garden most days after school to plant new seedlings, water the plants and see what’s sprouting. They’ve planted some different varieties of carrots, eggplant, tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, snap peas and bell peppers.

community lifestyle: family

By meredith WatKinS, m.a. , mft, reSident of San elijo hillS

At the ripe old age of 14 months, my daughter, Giana, leaped flailing arms and legs first into the Terrible Twos. Perhaps naively, I had thought I’d have a little more time to steel myself for this most charming of stages. But such is the nature of this journey we travel with our beloved offspring – no warn-ing, no real preparation, just trial by fire. Ready or not, here come the temper tantrums.

Now, I can intellectually grasp the concept that Giana is simply developing cognitively and emotionally, beginning to understand what she does and does not like, and expressing it to me the only way she knows how. I’m sure it’s an encouraging indication of her vast intelligence and strong will, which – when carefully tempered and encouraged in equal measure – will serve her very well as an adult. But. Emotionally, I want to run screaming from the house directly to the nearest wine-selling establishment.

We are only three months into this new phase, but I am quickly learning effective and ineffective responses to The Fits. At her age, there isn’t a lot of reasoning to be had, so the Walk Away and Ignore Technique is my ace-in-the-hole. If she stops screaming, I might try to talk to her as calmly as possible.

Lest you think I am some paragon of supernatural patience, please refer to my run-screaming-from-the-house statement above. This is what I really want to do. But I figure two screaming banshees is just one too many in any given household. Plus, the likelihood of her calming down in the face of my own tantrum is a fantasy.

However, with any bad behavior, it’s not the overt action that clues us into the problem, but what is driving the behavior that truly unlocks the door to understanding. For a more in-depth look, I default to Kathryn Kvols’ book, Redirecting Children’s Behavior. This ridiculously helpful book offers insights into the why of the temper tantrum as well as practical tips for how to diffuse them quickly or – even better – how to head them off altogether.

“Children usually misbehave because they are fulfilling a need,” Kvols states. “In order to teach your child a better way to tell you what he needs, you must figure out what goal he has in mind. Identify your child’s goal before you decide to discipline him.”

Kvols outlines four common goals behind children’s misbehavior and illu-minates a great key to deciphering which goal is behind your child’s current tantrum: tuning in to how you feel in the moment. Here is a cheat sheet for understanding and appropriately addressing your child’s temper tantrums.

child’s goal: attention

• Parent’s feelings: Annoyed with the child; want to remind or coax the child; feel delighted with “good” child

• Child’s reactions to reprimand: Temporarily stops misbehavior when given attention

• Child’s action seems to say: “I only count when I’m noticed or being served.” “I believe being loved equals having attention.”

Taming Temper Tantrums• Parental corrective action: Make no eye

contact; do not speak to child; make child feel loved (without words); take action as soon as child annoys you; teach child to get attention appropriately

child’s goal: Power

• Parent’s feelings: Provoked with child; feel need for power; challenged by child (Parent thinks, “I’ll make you do it!” or, “You can’t get away with that!”)

• Child’s reaction to reprimand: Intensifies misbehavior; wants to be the boss; wants to win

• Child’s action seems to say: “I only count when I’m dominating you.” “I only count when you do what I want you to do.” “I only count when I prove that you can’t boss me.”

• Parental corrective action: Give choices, not orders; don’t play tug-of-war; give friendly eye contact; don’t fight and don’t give in; give child useful ways to feel powerful; teach child to win/win negotiate

child’s goal: revenge

• Parent’s feelings: Hurt; angry; revengeful; thinks, “How could you do this to me?”

• Child’s reaction to reprimand: Wants to get even; makes others dislike him or her

• Child’s action seems to say: “I can hurt others as I have been hurt.”

• Parental corrective action: Do not hurt back; re-establish the relationship; use logical consequences the child will enjoy; make amends if you are wrong; teach child to assert feelings of hurt in appropriate ways.

child’s goal: avoidance

• Parent’s feelings: Despair; annoyed and sorry for child; thinks, “What can I do?”

• Child’s reaction to reprimand: No reaction because no reprimand was given; feels there is no use in trying; passive

• Child’s action seems to say: “I can’t do anything right, so I won’t do any-thing at all.” “I’m no good.” “Leave me alone.”

• Parental corrective action: Don’t coax or feel sorry for child; arrange for success in small, manageable steps; avoid doing things for child; find or cre-ate situations in which child can feel valuable; teach child to feel capable by overcoming obstacles and accomplishing tasks.

These guidelines are a great way to help you understand your child better, while strengthening your relationship with him or her and cultivating an envi-ronment of empathy, mutual respect and peace in your home.

Is Your Child Ready For Kindergarten?4. Does your child show responsibility for personal belongings? A child is expected to put their things away where they belong, such as toys and school supplies.

5. Can your child sit still for a sustained amount of time? The child should be able to listen, stay focused and sit still during appropriate activities.

6. Is your child’s behavior under control? Proper use of words and actions when frustrated should be demonstrated before progressing to kindergarten.

7. Does your child have expressive/receptive language and comprehen-sion? Speaking in complete sentences and the ability to understand and follow simple directions is necessary. A child should be able to re-tell stories and events.

8. Can your child demonstrate motor skills? Both gross (throw a ball, skip, climb) and fine (use scissors, hold a pencil) motor skills are needed daily in kindergarten.

9. Is your child capable of demonstrating acceptable social skills? The capacity to play and work well with other children, understand authority, follow rules, and share willingly is critical.

10. Is your child able to transition smoothly from one activity to the next? Many kindergarten classes are organized in “centers”, where students rotate between structured activities. A child should be able to go from one center to the next without teacher assistance.

While academic readiness is one indicator, a child’s emotional and social growth plays an even greater role in determining their readiness. If the answer is “no” in response to many of these questions, talk with your child’s preschool teacher to discuss their observations.

Hannah Park, a resident of San Elijo Hills, holds a M.A. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and is the principal of Santa Fe Christian Lower School in Solana Beach, California. Santa Fe Christian Schools is currently accepting applications for the 2011-2012 school year. Please visit www. SFCS.net for more information.

Preparing for kindergarten is an exciting time for a family. However, it can also be a time filled with anxieties and questions. The two questions

asked most often are: “How do I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?” and “Should I hold my child back if he has a late summer or fall birthday?”

Studies show that children who start kin-dergarten after they turn 5 do better emo-tionally and socially (and, in many cases, academically) than those who start at the age of 4. The recent passage of California law SB 1381, which will be phased in beginning in 2012, requires that students starting kinder-garten turn 5 by September 1st of the school year, a change from the current entry date of December 2nd.

So, is your child ready for kindergarten? It is important to note that not being ready may simply mean your child will benefit from another year to grow. This should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a negative. While age is an important factor, it should not be the only consid-eration as there are other signs of readiness to consider:

1. Can your child take care of personal needs? A child entering kindergar-ten should be able to button their coat, use the bathroom, wash their hands and use silverware correctly.

2. Does your child show age appropriate independence? A child should be able to separate easily from parents when going to preschool. It is appropriate at this stage to become apprehensive and shy about separating. However, preschoolers ready for kindergarten should be able to separate easily from routines and familiar settings.

3. Does your child show basic academic knowledge? Reciting the ABCs, recognizing letters and numbers up to 10, knowing primary colors and basic shapes is necessary before transitioning into kindergarten.

community lifestyle: well-being

By tK Smith, reSident of San elijo hillS, SPeCialiSt in fitneSS nutrition

Exercise? Don’t waste your time! What I mean by that is...Really! Don’t waste your time! If you’re going to spend your precious time and your hard-earned money, then make it count! I see people all the time in the gym or working with their trainers just going through the motions. If you are going to spend the time, make it count!

Time is precious. Life goes by so fast and you really need to hold on to each minute. A combination of exercise and good nutrition will help you live a longer, more healthy, active life, so you get to enjoy more of those precious moments.

Here are some things I do to not waste my time when I workout:

get help - My old workout routine was the same every week, year in and year out and I was getting minimal results at best. I started taking workout classes at a fitness studio and my workouts became very efficient and effec-tive. Working in a small class environment or with a trainer will allow you to spend less time working out. If you’re a regular person like me with a family and a job, you may not have the time it takes to come up with new and meaningful workout routines every single week. So, for me, classes are the perfect solution.

get your motivation - You’re in the gym, you’re working out, you are there and you are not getting that time back (remember, time is precious), so use it - focus! Don’t talk to your trainer or neighbor. Don’t look around at what other people are doing; you can do that stuff after if you want. If you are not 100% focused on your workout, you are not going to get 100% of the results you want. If you can talk as you exercise, it means you are not pushing yourself. If you want to talk, hire a shrink, not a personal trainer. Your trainer won’t be upset if you are working so hard you can’t talk with them. They will forgive you; I promise! For me, I look at every work-out as if it was my Olympic games, World Series, Super Bowl or whatever championship game of the sport you follow. Give it 100% effort every time and I promise you will be happy with your results.

eat - Exercise and nutrition go hand in hand; you really cannot have one without the other. So many times I hear people say, “The whole reason I workout is so I can eat what I want.” Well, I have not met too many people where that has worked out for them. That strategy is an uphill battle that you will eventually lose over time (kinda like the slots in Vegas). Proper nutrition will allow you to get the full benefits of your workout (so you’re not wasting your time) and you will see those results much faster.

Proper nutrition is important both before and after workouts and even during workouts (if you are working out at a certain level). Before your workout, you will want to make sure your body has the fuel it needs to get you through the workout, so you can really push yourself. When I know

Exercise? Don’t Waste Your TimeI have a tough workout class coming up in the evening, I plan my food all day long so that I know my body will be ready for the class. After a really hard class, if you worked hard and broke down some muscle, your body will be look-ing for some fuel to recover from your workout. Having some protein would be a good idea directly following a good workout to help you recover.

If you think you need to make a change, you probably do. I can guarantee you this: It will NOT get easier the older you get. If you want to live into your old age in a healthy way, you will have to make a change at some point. Whether you change today, tomorrow or 5, 10, 15 years from now, one day it will come. I personally think it is a lot more fun and easier to do on your own terms vs. having your doctor insist on it. Plus, you get to enjoy all the benefits of feeling your absolute best right now!

When you get into the best shape of your life, you enjoy each day more, you have more energy, people look at you differently, your relationships improve, your outlook on life totally changes, and you won’t have to worry about your health in your old age. What are you waiting for?

If you are serious about making those changes, take these simple steps: Get a good workout routine (take classes, get a trainer, or whatever), give each and every workout 100% effort, and give your body the right type and amount of fuel it needs. That is how you will transform your body into the body you never dreamed you could have!

San elijo hillS

business spotlight

David Lam lives here in San Elijo Hills with his wife Margie and his daughter Jackie who is currently in 5th grade at San Elijo Elementary. They moved to San Elijo Hills in 2002. The Lams had been living in Carlsbad when their neighbors, who were moving, convinced them to move to San Elijo Hills with them so they could continue to be neighbors!

David is a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones, a company that he joined because of their strength, stability, and continuity. Edward Jones was the perfect fit for David

and his values. The company is truly focused on building long-term relationships and providing a highly indi-vidual approach. David enjoys being part of his clients’ lives through both the good and the more challenging milestones of life.

David’s clients include both individual investors and small to medium sized businesses. He makes it a priority to really get to know his clients – where they are, where they’d like to be, what they value and how to translate those goals and values into specific financial goals. Whether the goal is financial independence or college savings – David’s clients really run the gamut. He loves that he can work with a teenager just looking to start long-

term savings and then later meet with another client who is managing mil-lions of dollars. David finds that while the complexities are different with each investor, the values are often very similar.

Edward Jones offers retirement accounts, IRAs, 401Ks, stocks, bonds, mutual funds – a variety of investments and services. As a leader in the financial services industry, however, what really differentiates Edward Jones is their personal approach. David can meet you at your home or in his office in Encinitas. It’s great to have someone to call when you need to set up a tool to meet that next financial goal or to minimize your tax liability. Planning, portfolio management, tax efficiency – these are all goals David can work with you to achieve.

David is extremely active in community service. He is the Community Service Chair for the Rotary in Encinitas and serves on their Financial Literacy Committee. David and his family are always out in the community rolling up their sleeves and volunteering. David also enjoys working with elementary students teaching them about commerce and business. When he’s not volunteering, David enjoys martial arts, fishing, cooking and just hanging out at home.

Sometimes we hesitate to ask for the financial help we need because we’re afraid of being ‘sold’ something we don’t need. At the same time, in today’s world, you really need someone you can trust as you navigate life’s changes. If you’re looking for a knowledgeable and patient person to work with you side-by-side for the long haul to ensure your financial plans are on target, you owe it to yourself to contact your neighbor, David Lam.
