THE PASSOVER LAMB

LORD JESUS HAS MANY SYMBOLS

As we study about the Passover and its meaning, past, present and future the most important part of the Passover was the Passover lamb and why. The Passover lamb represents Christ what he did on behalf of man before the foundation of the world and the end of the world. Christ as we know is Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last; and What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches in Asia”, Revelations 1:10-11.. “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose name s are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”, Revelations 13:8, Revelations 5:6.

GOD HAD A PLAN TO SAVE HIS LITTLE ONES

Christ’s blood had been shed from the foundation of the earth for our sins even before Adam sinned, which enabled him to be saved even though Satan caused him to sin.

When Christ was crucified he again was the Lamb slain without spot or wrinkle, innocent, who’s blood was shed on this earth and went into the ground for the salvation of all God’s children before and after the cross, “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot; Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you”, 1 Peter 1:19-20. “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted yet he opened not his mouth; He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth”, Isaiah 53:7.

WHY WAS THE LAMB PICKED ON THE 10TH DAY?

During the first Passover God commanded Moses to tell the Children of Israel to take a male lamb of the first year without blemish on the tenth day of the month according to the house of their fathers and for a small household to divide the lamb between them, Exodus 12:1-5. The question is why did they choose the lamb without blemish on the 10th day of the month?

To understand this, we need to look at Christ who was the Passover lamb and look at John 12:1-50. Before his crucifixion, Christ went to Mary and Martha’s house six days before Passover where he ate supper with them along with Lazarus who he had raised from the dead. On the sixth day before Passover, Mary took a pound of ointment and anointed Jesus’s feet and wiped his feet with her hair. With his feet Christ will bruise the serpent’s head. “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen”, Romans 16:20.

Judas Iscariot was there and complained of the waste of the ointment stating it could have been sold and the money given to the poor. However Christ told them this, “Let her alone; against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always”, John 12:8-8.

IT MAY SEEM STRANGE THAT CHRIST DID NOT ENTER IN ON A MIGHTY HORSE BUT THERE IS A REASON FOR IT

Many people knew Christ was there and came not only to see him but to see Lazarus as well who Christ raised from the dead after he was dead 4 days and his body began to decompose. This is also the time that the chief priest wanted to kill not only Christ but consulted that they might destroy Lazarus as well because many of the Jews went away and believed on Jesus.

The next day which was the 10th day of the month Abib Christ rode into Jerusalem on the ass of the colt just as the Passover lamb was chosen on the 10th day at the first Passover. The Passover lamb in Exodus 12:3, was chosen on the 10th day of Abib, represented Christ riding in on the colt of an ass;

THE PEOPLE SPREAD PALMSBEFORE JESUS AND SAID HOSANNA

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, thy King cometh unto thee; he is lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass”, Zechariah 9:9. People praised and shouted, Hosanna; blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord!

DID YOU KNOW THAT HYSSOP HAS A BITTER AND MINTY TASTE ?

The 14th day the lamb would be killed in the evening; this is the Passover. The blood of the lamb would be put on the 2 side post of the house which represented the sealing of the person by the blood of Jesus Christ. The people would uses hyssop to put the blood on the side post. What is hyssop? Hyssop: It was an herb used for purging. When they use hyssop to put blood on the side post it represented the purging of us with the blood of Christ. “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow”, Psalms 51:7.

The Passover lamb was not to be raw or boiled but roasted with fire; his head with his legs and with the purtenance thereof. What is purtenance? This is an animal’s viscera or internal organs especially the heart, liver, lungs, kidneys and omentum which is the fat veil covering the organs. The viscera or abdominal fat is located inside the peritoneal cavity. The whole lamb was to be roasted including the organs and eaten but anything left over was to be burned with fire in the morning.

We know that this lamb represented Christ and was pointing to his crucifixion. If we look at the sacrifices of ancient times, the burnt offering would be killed then laid upon the altar; his internal organs and fat would be washes and burnt as a sweet savor unto the Lord, Leviticus 1:1-10. When Christ was crucified he was a burnt offering as well on the 14th day of Abib and offered up unto God for our salvation; his blood and water from his side spilled on the ground which would save a person or damn them. All human flesh that went into the grave would be resurrected, some to everlasting life and some to everlasting death and damnation.

When Christ was crucified all of his blood rich organs were severed when the soldiers pierced his side, the heart, liver, lungs, kidneys and the caul above the liver was severed and his blood and water spilled from his side. The veil of the temple split in half at that time which represented the omentum that covered Christ’s internal organs. “And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake and the rocks rent”, Matthew 27:51. As the veil rent in the temple it represented a way being made for salvation.

As we look at the horrors and the suffering that Christ went through for us, let us be thankful and praise his holy name, which gave up his life for us, and won a victory over sin and death for us and freed us from eternal damnation. Amen.
