In 1884, the people of France gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States. It was a great gift of friendship. The copper statue symbolized1 the ideal2 of liberty shared by both peoples. French people donated the money to build the statue. In the United States, people raised the funds to build the foundation3 and pedestal.4 The famous figure of a robed woman holding a torch is one the largest statues ever built. It reaches a height of over 300 feet. The statue’s complete name is Liberty Enlightening the World. The French sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, designed the statue and chose its site at the mouth of New York Harbor. The great poet Emma Lazarus wrote about the Statue of Liberty. This poem entitled “The New Colossus” is inscribed5 on a plaque inside the lower level of the statue’s pedestal.

The New Colossus Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
