Program From the PresidentThe Society of Thoracic Radiology hosts its 32nd annual meeting March 16-19, 2014, at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio, in San Antonio, Texas. The program committee, headed by President-Elect Jeremy Erasmus, MD, has designed an outstanding comprehensive postgraduate radiology course in cardiothoracic imaging. The course curriculum covers a variety of cardiothoracic imaging topics including basics of image interpretation, diffuse infiltrative lung diseases, airways diseases, pulmonary infections, and cardiovascular imaging. Several sessions focus on the important topic of lung cancer with emphasis on state-of-the-art concepts in diagnosis, imaging and management. In particular, there is also a special session devoted to the hot topic of lung cancer screening.

The Benjamin Felson lecture entitled “Emerging Molecular Targets and Imaging Opportunities in Lung Cancer” will be delivered by John Heymach, MD, PhD, an internationally recognized expert on thoracic malignancy, from the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology, at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. We are also pleased to announce that the Gordon Gamsu Memorial Lecture entitled “Pulmonary Nodule Characterization” will be delivered by Jane Ko, MD, from New York University.

The Scanlon symposium this year focuses on molecular imaging of lung cancer and genetic abnormalities associated with interstitial lung diseases. Our featured lecture in this session, entitled “Molecular Imaging of Lung Cancer” will be delivered by Dr. David Piwnica-Worms, Professor and Chair of the MD Anderson’s Department of Cancer Systems Imaging.

Our joint session with the European Society of Thoracic Imaging this year features presentations on “Diffuse Interstitial Lung Diseases” by Dr. Sujal Desai, from the King’s College Hospital, and “Pitfalls in HRCT Diagnosis of Fibrosing Lung Disease”, by Dr. David Hansell, from the Royal Brompton Hospital, both in London, England.

Nine self-assessment modules (SAMs) provide important opportunities for your maintenance of certification and life-long learning needs. You may review the entire program at the Society’s web site: www.thoracicrad.org.

The Grand Hyatt San Antonio offers an exciting luxury blend of modernism and Latin culture on the famed San Antonio Riverwalk. Just steps from the Alamo, the Riverwalk gently winds through the city center, along scenic pathways and waterways, serving as a picturesque link between restaurants, hotels, and shops. Please join us at this exciting venue and enjoy both the local flavors and stimulation of an outstanding program in cardiothoracic imaging. I look forward to seeing you.

Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Statement of NeedRadiologists and practitioners with an interest in the science and practice of cardiothoracic imaging need to acquire comprehensive knowledge of the diagnosis, imaging, and management of affected patients to achieve excellence in delivery of care.

Course Objectives1. List basic concepts in imaging

interpretation including pitfalls, anatomic variants and frequently missed diagnoses.

2. Summarize the role of imaging in the assessment of cardiac disease, including diseases of the coronary arteries and great vessels of the thorax.

3. Understand the role of imaging in the screening, diagnosis, evaluation and management of patients with incidentally detected lung nodules.

4. Understand the role of imaging in the diagnosis, staging evaluation and management of patients with lung cancer and other thoracic neoplasms.

5. Describe the clinical and radiological evaluation and management strategies of a solitary pulmonary nodule, including the sub-solid lesion.

6. Describe current applications in computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and

positron emission tomography (PET) as they relate to the evaluation and management of thoracic diseases.

7. Describe a practical and multidisciplinary approach to the assessment of diffuse lung diseases.

8. Describe current issues in infectious diseases of the chest.

9. Understand the current status of interventional procedures of the chest and spectrum of post treatment changes in the thorax.

10. Understand basic strategies for the interpretation and management of mediastinal abnormalities.

Target AudienceThis course is designed for cardiothoracic radiologists, diagnostic radiologists, pulmonary medicine specialists, cardiothoracic surgeons, fellows and residents with an interest in cardiothoracic imaging. Because of the prevalence of diseases of the chest in the general population, the course will also be of value to internists and family physicians.
