Martin Luther King Jr. Day(January 15th, 2018)

Martin Luther King Jr. was a social activist and Baptist minister who playeda key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his

assassination in 1968.

While standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, King gave the iconic, memorable, and powerful “I Have a Dream” speech which was a spirited call

for peace and equality among everyone no matter what race they were.

King was later named “Man of the Year” by TIME Magazine and in 1964became the youngest person ever awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1983 President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a U.S. federalholiday in honor of King.  Martin Luther King Jr. Day is about celebrating hislife and achievements in the civil rights movement as well as celebrating

him as a civil rights leader in this country.
