The Virtual Library is the online presence for the libraries at the University Health Network and a gateway to the many resources and services available for all staff and students at UHN.In this tutorial you will learn about the Virtual Library and what it has to offer. At the end of this tutorial you will know how to access the Virtual Library; how to find journals, databases, and electronic and print books; how to request articles or books that are not available at your site library; how to request a literature search; and how to contact your Information Specialist.

The Virtual Library can be accessed through the Corporate Intranet, both from within UHN and through Remote Access.

Once you access the Corporate Intranet, you will see a link to the Virtual Library on the black menu bar. Click on it with your mouse. This menu bar will always be visible, allowing you to easily navigate to the Virtual Library.

If you are on the Research Network, the method of accessing the Virtual Library is slightly different. The link is found on the gold menu bar, and is called “Library”.

If you are working from home, you can access the Virtual Library from outside of UHN, there are a few extra steps. Visit UHN's public website at: www.uhn.ca.

From the Home page, click on the “For Staff” link located at the bottom of the left navigation.

Next select "Access Corporate Intranet" from the right-side menu.

Log in by entering your username and password at the prompt. Your username is your UHN Network Account or T-id number. It starts with t and is the username and password you would use to log into a computer from within the hospital. starts with t and is the username and password you would use to log into a computer from within the hospital.

UHN staff without T-id's can request Network Access. Your Manager will need to request one for you. If you don’t have a T-id, talk to your supervisor.

Now that you have accessed the Virtual Library, either from on-site or remotely, the home page will look the same. The library’s resources are organized into 3 main categories found in the centre of the page: Journals, Databases, and Catalogues.

Let’s look more closely at finding journals, databases and books.

In the Journals section you can browse or search the list of UHN Journals. You can also find other helpful information related to journals—instructions to authors, journal abbreviations, and journals at other Toronto-area hospitals.

When you are trying to locate a particular issue of a journal, first click on the link for “Search UHN Journals”.

You will be taken to the Journals List Search page where you will have two options for finding journals. You can browse journals using the Alphabetical List.

Or, you can Search by Title—this is the quickest method for finding a journal. You will simply type in a word or phrase from the journal title.

If you do not find any results for your search, you may wish to double-check your spelling.

Databases are used to search for literature on specific topics or questions. In the Databases section, you can use the drop-down menu to access a list of all databases available at UHN. In addition, links to the three most popular databases—Medline, EMBASE and CINAHL—are found directly below this menu, along with links to Evidence Based Medicine Resources and the E-CPS for those working at Toronto Rehab.

When you click on “Search a Database”, you will be presented with a list of each available database along with a summary of what it is and its uses.

In the “Catalogues” section you can search for resources, both print and electronic, available through UHN, the Toronto Public Library and the University of Toronto’s Gerstein Library. The UHN Collection includes resources available at all UHN Libraries , , including TRI. Toronto Public Library resources are free for anyone who lives, works, goes to school or owns land in the city of Toronto. The University of Toronto’s library resources are accessible to faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and researchers affiliated with the University of Toronto.

To search for electronic books at UHN, click on the “E-Books” link found in the “Catalogues” section.

You will be taken to the “Find E-Books” page where you can search for e-books by title, you can also browse selected e-books in various subject categories, or you can browse specific e-book collections directly from the publisher.

Now that we have explored the centre sections of the Virtual Library, let’s look briefly at some of the other resources and services available through the two side-bars. On the left-hand side, you will links to some of our subject or specialty-specific resource gateways, such as the “Nursing Gateway” or “Systematic Review Gateway”.

On the left-hand side, you will also be able to access important request forms. If you are interested in a literature search, an Information Specialist can provide this for you, for free. Simply fill out the Literature Search Request form. Try to be as detailed as possible.

If you already know which article or book you need and you have already searched our journal list and catalogue and the item you are looking for is not available at UHN, you can fill out an Article or Book Request form. This service is at a cost. Please include your cost centre number when filling out the form, or indicate that you will pay cash on receipt.

You can also use the Article or Book Request forms to request items that are at another UHN library branch for free.

If you are interested to see the schedule of group workshops, click on the “Workshops” link. If you prefer online tutorials and help, you may wish to investigate the link for “Online Tutorials”.

On the right-hand side of the Virtual Library, you can find general information about the library—our contact list, our hours and locations.

If you would like to contact your Information Specialist directly, you can use the contact list to find his or her details. Information Specialists or Medical Librarians are assigned and dedicated to specific program client groups. You can contact your Information Specialist to request free literature searches or individual and group training sessions on the use of the library’s resources.
