ULSTERBEAUTY

Summer Glow: As summer approaches, let’s face it ladies, we are all seeking a youthful,

glowing complexion, and this month I was given the perfect opportunity to take a little time to prepare my skin, with a fantastic MesoTherapy facial by Jenny McKeever from Indulgence Beauty & Complementary Therapies in Armagh.

The Meso-Infusion System incorporates the most advanced ultra sound technology using a Cryoderm System, which is a non-invasive microdermabrasion and ultra-sound treatment that uses specially designed serums to aid rejuvenation and regeneration of the skin. It helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, firm and lift skin and improve skin tone and texture.

This futuristic treatment follows four specific steps: thermotherapy, diamond tip abrasion, ultra sound and cryotherapy. With this whole procedure, the use of the Ultra Sonic technology, along side the new Aesthetic Mesotherapy products I benefited from the ‘no needle’ alternative to Botox. It sounds super technical - but don’t be put off by the science, as the procedure is really quite relaxing and lasts just 45

minutes. In short, your skin is super cleansed by the micro dermabrasion, then warmed by the ultrasound which also delivers the rich serums and then the cryo therapy ( cryo usually means freezing!) seals it all in by closing the pores and letting the magic exilir of the serums work their wonders under the dermis and epidermis.

Feeling relaxed I let Jenny work away beginning with a warm disc application treatment that helped to open my surface skin pores. The heat helped to accelerate the absorption process of the vital nutrients in the mesotherapy products into the skin and was a very comfortable experience. So far so good!

Next was a mechanical exfoliation, using a diamond tip micro dermabrasion, which gently worked away tired and aged skin layers prompting new skin cell regeneration. Possibly the most important part of this treatment, this procedure left my skin looking rejuvenated and radiant and assisted with reducing those fine lines and wrinkles. The diamond tips are available in 3 different grades so this treatment is suitable for anyone, even if you suffer with sensitive skin.

The third step in the treatment involved the Ultra-sound attachment,

by Cathy Martin

which worked by stimulating my skin tissue, and as Jenny informed me, improved the permeability of the cell membranes. This part of the treatment generates frictional heat, which is known to increase collagen production, improve blood circulation, relax muscles and reduce the appearance of cellulite. The ultra-sound also assists with the infusion of the serums

SpaSleuth

ULSTERBEAUTY

deep into the pores in the skin. The treatment was then completed

with the use of a cold attachment which closed my skin pores and sealed the serums into my face. The cryotherapy treatment slows down the metabolism of the skin meaning that the benefits of the overall treatment last for much longer and ensure I receive the best results.

Immediately after I could see

an improved brightness in my complexion, with some wrinkle smoothing around my eyes. My skin was noticeably smoother, feeling very fresh and revived and, as promised, there was no obvious trauma or damage.

I must admit after one treatment I am extremely impressed and, at a special introductory offer price of £40, I am sure I will return. This treatment

can cost considerably more at other establishments (up to £70) so to make the trip to the Indulgent Spa proves to be a very cost effective experience.

Last season’s infatuation with the crop top is back for spring summer with a vengeance, as exposed midriffs see the crop top trend explode.

If the words ‘crop’ and ‘top’ leave you feeling cold, conjuring up dubious images of belly-flashing ‘90s pop stars, you are not alone. Undoubtedly, not the easiest seasonal trend to style, it takes a somewhat daring fashion

sense to experiment with this look. However, with the help of a touch of modernity and talented designers, the crop top has had somewhat of a fashion makeover since its last carnation in the ‘90s. Just a splash of skin and a flash of a honed tum is the more understated, sophisticated approach this time around. Varied in style, SS’14 catwalks saw designers experiment and play with silhouettes; bralets, ruffled bandeaus, slashed tees and corsets offered something for everyone.

Designers such as Dolce & Gabbana and Peter Som revealed

a feminine take on the trend, teaming pretty summer bralets with midi floaty skirts. In contrast, Michael Kors opted for tailored, crisply cut tops in clean lines, exposing just a sliver of mid-section. While at House Of Holland and DSquared2, printed two-piece co-ordinates were all the rage, capturing the essence of summer fun.

While the crop top is often (understandably) a fashion trend that is feared by many, this season’s selections make it easier to embrace this tricky style statement with a deliciously diverse spin.

STYLIST TIPTry this trend for both day and night: Opt for playful,

printed, colourful co-ordinates for daytime, such as a cap sleeve

crop and matching shorts. Go for elegant in the evening with

a luxurious lace bralet and tailored pencil skirt.

looks to the future with renewed confidence as the economy begins to emerge from what has been a difficult period for this famous district during the recent recession.

There is cause for celebration and optimism as the road fills up once more, a sure sign that things are on the move. Established names such as SHU Restaurant (voted Best in Belfast) are joined by exciting new pubs and eateries such as The Albany, Deane & Decano and Saphyre Restaurant which together are setting new standards for those who elect to come to socialise and enjoy this great retail district and all it has to offer.

Known by many as the “Style Mile” this jewel in Belfast’s retail crown is coming back with a roar.

Don’t be fooled however, in this case, beauty is not just skin deep!

Look beyond well established fashion names such as Jourdan, Max Mara, Emporio, Harrisons and Evelyn Brandt for women and Hugo Thomas for men and you will find smaller boutique stores nestling amongst an array of independent coffee shops, health and beauty salons, art galleries, home interiors, designers and award winning hairdressers.

The road is also home to some of the finest private medical and dental services available in the country and even boasts a private hospital, which incidentally, is open for minor emergency services as well.

What makes this area different is not simply that it comprises a wide and varied range of businesses offering choice for all tastes and pockets. It’s not that the new

relaxed Clearway Restrictions (do please check signs!) allow free car parking along the road meaning it has never been easier to pop along, stop, shop and enjoy a coffee without fearing a fine.

Nor even the relaxed village feel or the cleanliness and friendliness of the area.

What sets this great retail and business district apart is that it has what is increasingly difficult to find on our high streets today; independent businesses, owned, managed and staffed by locals who put their stamp on their businesses and offer service, value and variety that is not generally available elsewhere.

When you shop here or use any of the services on offer you are supporting local businesses and local jobs, and that must be worth celebrating!

River Medical is getting ready to open a state-of-the-art new clinic on the Lisburn Road

in Belfast, in the coming weeks. The clinic is long established in the Republic of Ireland, since 2008 and specialises in the most comprehensive range of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures including the latest and most advanced anti-aging and expert skin treatments.

At the stunning new clinic you’ll also find a host of treatments previously unavailable in Northern Ireland. One such treatment is Thermafrax; a unique combination of the FDA-approved Thermage and Fraxel treatments which delivers the most remarkable of anti-aging results.

Thermage uses unique radiofrequency technology to

River Medicalsafely heat the deep layers of the skin which stimulates the body’s natural skin renewal process. Over time, sagging skin is replaced with smoother, tighter skin and an overall younger looking appearance is achieved. The Fraxel uses laser technology to dramatically improve the skin’s texture and appearance. The combination of both treatments, specifically tailored to the patient and their skin produces the most effective of anti-aging results - removing lines and wrinkles and also tightening and toning the skin.

If it’s just instant radiance you are after, you’ll love the new Vit-illume treatment which is also exclusive to River Medical. The treatment uses a pioneering new skin re-surfacing technology to deeply cleanse and exfoliate,

super-hydrate and revitalise the skin. It also uses a tailored combination of meso vitamins and potent peptides to deliver an immediate radiance. There’s no down time and the results are visible immediately. It’s said to be the perfect red-carpet treatment as it leaves the skin beautifully dewy, visibly nourished and uplifted.

Northern Ireland’s leading make up industry awards are back this summer for

the fifth consecutive year. The Shaz Awards, founded by Belfast woman Ciara Daly who has been working in the make-up industry for over a decade, will return to AM:PM’s Cabaret Supper Club this June with two new categories.

Ciara’s Lisburn Road based make up academy is one of Ireland’s most sought after training facilities, offering courses for beginners to the more experienced artists; and it has created and nurtured some of Ireland’s freshest creative talent. The Ciara Daly range of brushes and make up products are also sold worldwide but these awards celebrate the talent closer to home.

The Shaz Awards Return for Fifth Year

Ciara said, “I’m beyond pleased that the Shaz Awards are back for the fifth year in a row. Each year I’m blown away by our students’ skills and talent, but also by their inspirational stories and the work of other artists out there, because not all categories are limited to our own students and former students.”

She continued, “I think it’s great to see so much talent coming through, and with so many blockbuster films and TV series being filmed here in Northern Ireland, there is a real opportunity for make-up artists to gain fabulous experience and hone their craft.”

The awards are named after Ciara’s mother Sharon, affectionately known as Shaz, who passed away suddenly in

2006. They aim to celebrate and encourage creative talent within the burgeoning make up industry by celebrating excellence and creativity. Additionally, the awards support ‘Feeding Dreams’ charity, which is a charity founded by former student and Ciara’s long term close friend Arlene Gormley who uprooted from Belfast to help build schools for disadvantaged children in Cambodia. Feeding Dreams provides free education to four hundred children and young adults.

Ciara said: “I have been inspired over the years by so many of my students who have gone through difficult times and instead of letting it get the better of them, they’ve put their energy into learning a new skill in make up artistry and turning it into a real positive. That’s why I created the Phoenix Award in the first year and this usually goes to the artist who has inspired me the most by rising from the ashes so to speak.”

She continued “Although the awards are predominantly considered to be a celebration of those working in make up, they’re also designed to celebrate other creative talents aligned with the industry. That’s why I’ve ensured to include awards for photographer of the year, hairdresser of the year and model of the year who make up artists obviously work very closely with. I wanted it to be a celebration of all talents within this exciting and creative industry.”

The judges for the awards will include fellow make-up artist DJ Griffin, artistic director of Toni

her dreams, along with all her accessories to complete her wedding day look. Her mum also benefits in choosing her perfect Mother of the Bride outfit from the stunning Blush collections.

Primary School Teacher Zoe will also be featured on Blush’s advertising campaign for the next twelve months following a one-on-one photo shoot with renowned fashion photographer Khara Pringle. On the day itself, when she will tie the knot with Mark Hanna, Zoe will benefit from having her hair professionally styled by Lynette Murray from Blue Hairdressing

Speaking about her win she said: “I am totally over the moon. I did not think in a million years I would ever win. It is such a privilege and honour to represent Blush Boutique. The 'Blush' girls have been amazing at advising and helping me choose my dream wedding dress for the most important day in my life. Winning Face of Blush will make the day even more special for us and I can't thank them enough.”

The judging panel that were faced with the difficult task of choosing from the 18 finalists included Belfast FASHIONWEEK Director Cathy Martin, make- up artist to the stars Paddy McGurgan and celebrated photographer Khara Pringle, but when they heard Zoe’s story that made it all the more easier.

Zoe isn’t only a teacher she’s also a volunteer with a charity called New Beginnings Charitable Trust which helps vulnerable and neglected children in Uganda. For the last number of years, Zoe her fiancé Mark and her family have been very involved with this project.

ULSTERFITNESS

You Are What You Eat – another commercially coined phrase we hear time and

time again. It’s only now that I have altered my eating habits and in turn, my view of food, that this phrase really hits home with me.

Body Lab...By Eve BrannonSponsored by BODY VIBES

It’s actually scarily overwhelming how true a concept it is. We all have a choice – what energy we fuel are bodies with, what we provide ourselves in terms of nutrient value, ultimately what kind of a chance we offer ourselves of being healthy, fit

and well. There is a clear and direct correlation between input and output. In today’s world of pressure and fast paced living it is too easy to opt for the hassle-free option of convenience and fast foods, processed, packaged and good to

Page 41: Ulster Life

39

ULSTERFITNESS

go. But in reality, is that the easy option? Food is a massive part of our lives, our culture, our pleasure. Personally I spend a ridiculous amount of time thinking about food, recipes, grocery shopping, my next snack. But maybe it’s time we put the effort and thought into our diets and take a real look at how we eat, what we eat and our relationships with food.

This is where it’s easy to become overwhelmed and a little confused. We are bombarded by the media with new fad diets, new food products, what’s healthy this week and what’s not. So sometimes, in order to start from the beginning a-fresh, it’s valuable to seek the opinion and advice from a professional, to learn the basics and get started with some key focal rules to eat and live by.

With this in mind, I decided to ask readers what their ‘grey areas’ were and in turn, what food and diet related questions they’d most like to put to an expert - a professional, certified Nutritionist. Welcome Peter Baird of NI Supplements. Peter was the Nutritional Consultant who created my eating plan for initial blog ‘Three Months To A New Me?’ – a plan that I gained great results from and that I maintain the clean eating principles of today.

“We all have a choice – what energy we fuel are bodies with, what we provide ourselves in terms of nutrient value”

PETER BAIRDA qualified Nutritional Consultant, Peter is a Dr. Eric Serrano official European Practioner. He has worked as a professional consultant under Matt Lovell, official Nutritionist to the UK Olympic 2012 team. As well as with other professional athletes including the English National rugby team, Gwent Newport Dragons Magners Premier League and Co. Derry GAA.

Reader: What are the top three tips for losing body fat?Peter:1. Good clean food. If free time in your life is tough, making good clean mother natures food choices will help with fat loss. 2. Stay away from as much refined sugar (man made junk) and eat natural food sources. 3. Go easy on lots of sugary fruits and supplement with a good multivitamin to make sure your body has optimal levels of nutritional vitamins and minerals.

Reader: Can clean eating be done on a tight budget?Peter:Eating a ‘real food diet’ obviously isn’t as easy as purchasing mass processed food sources, but here are a few quick tips on how to do it on a budget:1. Meal planning for no waste. It’s pretty disgraceful what we throw out and waste, so choose a few different recipes for your food and plan for 2-3 days in advance for your purchase.

2. Prepare and buy in bulk i.e. buy a whole chicken! It works out loads cheaper in the long run. So for evening meals and salads, you have plenty of meat to choose from. Also you can get some really healthy recipes for bone broths etc, which are amazingly healthy!3. Buying local. Yes, local is best! Go to a market and buy local farmed produce at half the price of superstores. Aside from being fresh, we support the local community around us. As a country, we have rich soils and a lot less pollution than most other European countries, eliminating unnecessary pollutants on fresh foods.

Reader: What foods should be avoided the most?Peter:Foods that are processed contain high amounts of fructose syrups, sugars and salt. This is because these ingredients are hugely inexpensive for the manufacturer to buy, help create the ‘cardboard value’ foods taste and give them long shelf lives. Your body cannot convert these to an energy source, leaving only one option of how to store it. And how do we do that?? As body fat. This not only gets stored as body fats, but also is linked to ALL serious diseases including cancer, mental health problems and heart disease. Avoid these at all costs where possible.

Enjoying one of the most beautiful locations in Northern Ireland; the District of

Magherafelt covers an area of 573 sq. km, stretching from the shores of Lough Neagh in the east to the breath taking Sperrin Mountains in the west. The district is steeped in history with many relics of the past scattered throughout its diverse landscape – ancient monuments, ruined churches, plantation towns and a diverse and unique cultural heritage.

Magherafelt town centre boasts a

number of excellent shops. Almost without exception, these shops are local, independent traders rather than multiples. There is a very high proportion of excellent boutiques selling mid-to high-end woman’s wear, high-value wedding dress shops, a mini department store with lots of female fashion brands, great jewellers, and a number of homeware and giftware outlets. Other shops include sportswear, music shop, shops offering children’s wear and men’s wear and specialists offering health, beauty and wellbeing

products and treatments. Also particularly notable in

Magherafelt is the impressive range of fresh food outlets, ie family butchers, home bakeries and fresh fruit and vegetables sellers. There are considerably more of these than other towns Magherafelt’s size have and they’re all of very high quality - in fact several are multi-award winning.

Visitors to the district can now download the new smart phone app for apple and android devices “never better”. The app contains live information on local business promotions and services. Visitors to Magherafelt can also use the augmented reality feature to learn about the history of the town and view old photographs at various points of interest throughout the town centre.

Ciaran served his time as a joiner during his teenage years and then went on to

work in shopfitting working across England and Europe but it meant spending a lot of time away from home. He has also worked as a contracts manager for in both the shopfitting and building trade. Ciaran met Simon many years ago as they live in the same area and worked together previously. “We each have our own areas of skills, knowledge and expertise that we have built up over years of experience and

this was the foundation for Lignum Interiors” Lignum specialises in the design manufacture and when required fitting of interiors for both domestic and commercial projects ranging from kitchens, bedroom and bespoke furniture to pub, restaurant and shopfitting.

What’s a typical day for you Well there isn’t really a typical day because things change by the hour in this game but if all is going to plan in a typical day I will be pricing work, fine tuning details of

upcoming projects, meeting with other designers and architects, meeting existing or prospective clients, spending time in the workshop with Simon…. the list could be endless, there is never a dull moment that’s for sure! Tell us about your journey? Having my own business was something I always wanted to do but getting here hasn’t been easy. I have tried before but it just didn’t work for me so this was a big risk, you have the fear of failing again

Designsfor life...

and now with having 3 children they are depending on you for support, so I had a lot of soul searching to do. Looking back now at the past year or so it was worth it I am a lot happier and this has filtered through to all other aspects of my life because I am passionate about what I am doing and have people around me who believe in me are positive and supportive. Finding the right partner has been key to Lignum’s success, Simon and I share the same vision and value base and are can be open and honest with

each other. I would like to say that it was all well planned but due to circumstances and the situation we both found ourselves in at the time we just jumped in because we knew we could make the business work.

What does the next 12 months look like for you?I would like to build on the design aspect of the business and with the help of invest NI with marketing and advertising in America secure more projects there. We are also working on a couple of new

products Lignum Box and Lignum Fresh, which I would like to see developed further this year.

What’s your advice to anyone wanting a career in design? Be prepared to problem solve, as it can be challenging getting a design or concept from the computer screen into the real world! Creating the vision is only one aspect, knowledge of the building industry and how it works has been crucial to me and enabled me to offer a hands on approach right to the completion of a project.

What do you get up to in your free time? Between work and running around after our three children spare time is in short supply! The one thing I do make time for is training at Down Boxing Academy a few times a week- it’s a great way to let of steam and clear the head. I have also been known to visit my local pub- purely for research purposes of course!

If you could do any other job what would it be? I would love to be on the other side of this industry and own my own pub/ restaurant… and of course it would be designed and manufactured by Lignum Interiors! My parents used to run a social club back in the day and my older brother did as well it must just be in the blood.
