20th Anniversary VERMONT BREWERS FESTIVAL 2012Letter from Festival Chair

Welcome Beer Lovers!

On behalf of the Vermont Brewers, welcome to the 20th Anniversary of the Vermont Brewers Festival. We are proud to have been the host of this event for 20 years with support of the City of Burlington, Vermont Tourism and our many volunteers. For a good number in attendance, we are well aware that this has become an annual pilgrimage to the great state of Vermont. We would like to extend a thank you for the continued support of the craft brewing industry. For those for whom this is a first occasion, we are confident that we have assembled an excellent representation of craft brewers from Vermont, as well as from the US and Canada. To mark the 20th Anniversary, a good number of Vermont breweries have partnered with another brewery to brew collaboration beers to be released specifically at this Festival.

For this year’s Festival, we lowered the number of tickets sold to reduce crowding. Also, we have expanded the number of breweries attending the festival to 40 for added diversity. While we have taken the time to assemble such a myriad of breweries and styles of beers for all palates to choose from, we politely ask that you also take the time to consume these products responsibly. Please utilize our FREE water provided (as we have had in place for a few years now) and stay hydrated. We have expanded the choices of food vendors to balance out your sampling. Consider that the Vermont Brewers will have added staff at their location(s) around the state, in anticipation of you making a visit before or after your attendance of the Vermont Brewers Festival. So if you did not get to a booth for a specific brand, you can still visit the brewery at its primary location.

Be safe, enjoy yourself and please come again!

Welcome, Festival Team & Contact Info

Welcome to the Vermont Brewers Festival The Vermont Brewers Association represents the growing craft brewing movement in our state, and is dedicated to the promotion of some of the finest beers and ales on the planet. It is also our aim to help educate the public on the wonderful world of artisanal brewing and the ever expanding varieties and styles.

Now with 24 breweries in Vermont, there is a hand-crafted beer to be had in practically every corner of the state. And with the growing success of our bottling breweries, two of which are in the top 25 in the country, more beer enthusiasts from away are finding out what we here have know for years: Vermont makes great beer!

With regional breweries, micro breweries, nano breweries and brewpubs, Vermont has truly become a destination location for beer lovers. While raising millions in tax revenue and creating hundreds of livable wage jobs, the brewers of Vermont are one of the fastest growing segments of the state economy.

Considering our mission to promote artisanal beer and educate consumers on the joys of a well made beer crafted with the finest ingredients, we have brought together some of the most interesting brewers in North America to take part in the festival. We have chosen this magical location on the bank of Lake Champlain for the wonderful view of the Adirondack Mountains, and as a great place to enjoy the finest of what life can serve up in a glass. So, relax and Enjoy!

Thank you for supporting your local breweries.

Beer Descriptions | Vermont Brewers

14TH STAR BREWING CO.St. Albans, VT

AMERICAN PALE ALE (5%) Our debut offering! Balanced, very drinkable, and with a refreshing hop finish.

THE ALCHEMIST Waterbury, VT

CELIA SAISON (6.5%) A sorghum beer that earned a Gold medal at the 2010 World Beer Cup in the gluten-free category. Belgian Saison yeast and curacao orange peel impart spice and fruit that balance out and complement the distinct flavor of sorghum.

HEADY TOPPER (8.0%) Brewed since 2003, this American double IPA is not intended to be the biggest or most bitter. It is brewed to give you waves of hop flavor, without any harsh bitterness. Always fresh and unfiltered.

TARNATION (8.0%) Collaboration with Portsmouth Brewery. A strong, ridiculously hoppy, imperial milk stout - very dark and scrumptious.

THE BOBCAT CAFE & BREWERY Bristol, VT

FLOOD SUDS (4.9%) Collaboration with UVM Ag Extension: Northwest Crops & Soils Team. This Belgian-inspired Wit has barley, wheat and hops cultivated at three Vermont farms. Phenolic spiciness attributed by fermentation and a subtle hop bitterness contributes a mild orange-citrus note in this unfiltered beer.

SAISON (6.9%) This Belgian-inspired farmhouse ale has a golden color with a white foam head. Aroma notes are a mix of lemon, citrus, earthy-clay and roses. Flavor notes offer a mellow white pepper and citrus with a mild tartness that finishes very dry.

SAISON DE CASSIS (6.2%) Translation: a “season of blackcurrants.” This Belgian-inspired farmhouse style is brewed with barley from Belgium, hops from the USA and Germany and yeast cultivated from a difficult-to-obtain Belgian yeast. A crisp and very dry beer with esters/aromas of earthiness and fruitiness and a subtle tart finish from Vermont-grown blackcurrants.

DENNIS HOP’RD (5.9%) Belgian-inspired Pale Ale with an amber color, full body and a peppery finish from a special Belgian ale strain, triple dry hopped with a generous amount of English kent golding and citra hops. The resulting ale is a hybrid belgian extra special bitter.

UNREPENTANT (5%) A Belgian-styled, Chocolate-Pepper Stout. The name says it all, no regrets here taking a stout, brewing it with just the right amount of Pippali (Piper longum) in the kettle, fermenting with Belgian ale yeast that produced a pepper ester and dry-nibbed in the serving tank with cacao!

SOUTH MOUNTAIN STOUT (6.0%) A semi-dry stout with an initial malt and caramel flavor profile coupled with a distinctive dry-roasted bitterness in the finish. The emphasis of coffee-like flavor and a light degree of roasted malt aromas define much of the character with medium body.

BALTIC PORTER (8.2%) A deep, dense and thoughtful beer with many layers of flavors; from sweet and soothing maltiness to hints of chocolate character and background. While this beer was top fermented keeping true to historic roots of the style, the brew was conditioned as a bottom fermented variation, producing a softer roundness in the final product.

ZUSAMMENARBEIT (4.4%) Collaboration with Loup Rouge of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec. Zusammenarbeit is the German word for collaboration or “working together.” German-inspired Gose. A complex style of ale that has malted barley and malted wheat, as well as wheat berries that were soured by Vermont wild yeast. Lightly salted and spiced with a small amount of coriander, this unfiltered offering balances the sharp sourness with a sparkling effervescence.

HUIT HUIT (8.8%) Collaboration with BENELUX. This experimental style just shy of a wheat wine is based on the Belgian-inspired Wit pumped up with all things “huit!” The use of “8” abounds with New Zealand Nelson Sauvin and German Saphir hops added at 8 bitterness units (BU) each at the 88th minute of the kettle boil, with a second dose at the 44th minute. Spiced with Curacao orange peel and coriander.

Tasting Notes

Reprinted with permission from BeerAdvocate.com | Respect Beer

When analyzing a beer, you can’t just swill it down, burp and say “it’s great” or “it’s crap.” And, even though tasting is an individual art, there are a few

steps, which if followed, will take your beer tasting to a blissful level.

LOOK Take pause and marvel at its greatness before you partake of it. Raise the beer in front of you, but don’t hold your beer to direct light as this will dilute its true color. Describe its color, its head and its consistency.

AGITATE Swirl your beer, gently in the glass. This will pull out aromas, slight nuances, loosen & swtimulate carbonation and test head retention.

SMELL 90-95% of what you experience is through you sense of smell. Breathe thru your nose with two quick sniffs, then with your mouth open, then thru your mouth only (nose and mouth are

connected in the experience). Let olfaction guide you. Agitate again if need be, and ensure that you are in an area that has no overpowering aromas. Enjoy its bouquet.

TASTE Now sip the beer. Resist swallowing immediately. Let it wander and explore your entire palate. Let your taste buds speak. Note the mouthfeel, the consistency of the liquid’s body, and breathe

out during the process of tasting. This process of exhaling is called “retro-olfaction” and will release retained stimulations at the mucus and mouthfeel level, but at a higher temperature. At times this will be the same as the olfactory process if not different and complimentary. Try to detect any sweetness, salty flavors, acids and general bitterness. Explain what they are, or what they are similar to.

ALSO, try tasting the beer after it warms a bit (just a bit mind you). Really cold beer tends to mask some of the flavors. As a beer warms, its true flavors

will pull through, become more pronounced.
