What we would like to achieve on our Bear Hunt!

We would like to give children the opportunity to experience a new environment in which to work. To demonstrate to them that they can adapt and learn from the environment around them, also giving them the opportunity to use different resources and to build on team work.

Why we have chosen Abington Park for our hunt

This terms topic in Literacy has been focused around the story of ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’. This trip will allow us to extend the topic beyond the confines of a classroom, allowing the children to express themselves in a different environment.

Abington Park is an ideal location as there are many places in which a bear could hide.

To organise the trip, we will need...

• Risk Assessment/Health and Safety issues: we need to be aware of any safety issues that could arise during our time at the park. We will also need to consider personal medication for the children.

• Permission Slips: We will need to ask all children’s parents/careers permission before the trip can take place.

• Adults for extra help: To maintain current pupil to adult ratios, and to make sure that any volunteers are CRB checked.

• NO EXTERNAL FUNDING: as the park is within walking distance from the school.

• The children will also need to take packed lunches and water in a suitable container. Ideally, carried in a back pack so that their hands are free for the other activities.

• Suitable clothing must be worn, for example, a light weight waterproof coat, sun hat, sensible shoes. Parents must be guided in applying sun cream to their children if appropriate to the weather on the specific day.

What will the children achieve from the trip?

This trip will provide the children with an alternative environment in which to learn, increasing their knowledge through fun activities incorporating Geography, Design Technology and PE and Dance. It will also increase the children’s subject knowledge of the environment and how it can be used to aid learning.

The children will be working together in small groups, reinforcing team building skills – which include cooperation, listening to each other, working together to reach a desired target and communication of their results to other groups of children.
