Introduction

The Winterberry Baby Blanket is the third in my series of seasonal blankets.

I was inspired by the Faerie Cakes colourway to create this design. The blue ombre effect of

this yarn is quintessentially winter. It made me think of chilly, frosty mornings when the sky is a

clear blue. As in my other blankets, I wanted to create a design that reflects how nature reacts

to the seasonal changes. It was a process, but I was struck by images I found of holly and

winterberry plants. I love how the pop of colour their berries add interest to an otherwise

monotone season.

I designed this pattern for Caron Cakes. You can also choose to use cotton for a lighter

blanket, or wool for an even warmer blanket.

I used 2 cakes of Faerie Cakes and let the colour change happen naturally. If you would prefer

to have control of the colour change, you can separate out the colours into separate skeins

before making the blanket.

You will also need a contrasting colour (I used a dark pink) for the berries and the bluebird

accents. If you would like to add snow, you will also need a white yarn. You won’t need much,

so yarn scraps are fine.

Now for the legal stuff: with this pattern you’re more than welcome to make items for small-

scale sale. I only ask that you credit me as the designer. No mass produced items may be made

without my prior permission. This pattern cannot be reproduced or reposted in any way, and

cannot be translated without my consent.

Materials

To make this blanket 80cm W x 90cm L (with a margin of error of 5cm) exactly as shown you

will need the following materials:

• 2x MC Cakes of Caron Cakes Yarn (Faerie Cakes)

o You will be playing yarn chicken at the end with 2 cakes. So if you don’t have

nerves of steel you should either buy an extra 100g (128 meters/140 yards) of

aran yarn for the border, or an additional cake.

• 50g CC1 Scheepjes Colour Crafter Apeldoorn for the berries and bluebird accents

• 50g CC2 Scheepjes Colour Crafter Weert for the snow drops

• 6mm Crochet Hook (US: J/10, UK and CA: 4)

• Yarn Needle

• Blocking Mat

• Blocking Pins

If you wish to use a different type of yarn than what I have used, the specifications are as

follows:

Main Colour:

• Aran Yarn (worsted weight, 10 ply, medium 4)

• 400 grams (14.2 oz)

• 700 meters (766 yards)

• Cotton or wool blend

Contrasting Colours (you need 2):

• DK yarn (8 ply, light 3)

• 50 grams (1.8oz)

• 150 meters

• Acrylic, cotton or wool blend

As this pattern is for a baby blanket, I would recommend purchasing yarn that can be machine

washed and is designed for heavy use. The last thing new mums want to do is hand-wash

blankets!



Abbreviations BLO Back Loops Only

The back bar of the V-shaped loops you see when looking down on the top-side of a project.

CH Chain Starting with a SL ST on your hook, yarn over and pull yarn through loop.

SC Single Crochet Insert hook into ST. Pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull yarn through both 2 loops.

SL ST Slip Stitch Insert hook into ST. Pull up a loop. Pull this loop through the first loop on hook.

Special Stitches and Techniques

Standing ST

This stitch is what is used when changing colours, or when joining the yarn again after the

bluebird. You can find a good tutorial on how to do a Standing HDC here.

French Knot Berries

This embroidery stitch is used for the berries. You will need to use 2 strands of DK yarn for

each berry. Try to cut a nice long piece of yarn to complete all berries in a cluster at a time.

This will reduce the number of ends you will have to weave in at the end. You can find a good

tutorial on how to do French knots on crochet here. Once you have created your berry cluster,

tie your ends together firmly (2 knots for 4 ends) and then weave your ends into the back of

the berry cluster.

Snow Drop Bobble Stitch

These will be added to the work after it is finished as a type of surface crochet. You will need

to use DK yarn in CC2. Create a SL ST on your hook the way you would for a standing ST.

Choose where you want to place your snow drop. Pinch the top and bottom stitches and make

a bobble ST around the middle of the 2 STs you have chosen. For a refresher on how to make

a bobble ST, see this video here. Finish off and weave your ends into the back of the bobble

ST.

Instructions READ BEFORE STARTING:

• Grey row = front side of work

• Colours in {curly brackets} refer to recommended colour changes. When changing colours, I use a standing HDC instead of a starting chain.

• Numbers in [square brackets] within the text refer to the image it corresponds to

• The turning chain at the end of each row does not count as a stitch

• When working in BLO or FLO – this is the front or back loop as seen from whichever side you’re working on, NOT the FLO or BLO or the “right” side of the work

• Except when making leaves or flowers, there should be 7 HDCs between each of the FPTR stems. This will change to 15, and eventually 23 as the blanket grows. On each end there should be 4 HDCs. I would recommend counting at the end of each row.

• If you have a greater or smaller number of stitches than required, there are the following options:

o Undo (frog) your work until you find the mistake. This is recommended if you have more than 1 or 2 extra/fewer STs OR the stems have started to bend.

o If you have only added 1 or 2 extra stitches, HDC2TOG in the STs between the stems that contain the mistake (this will stop the stems from bending)

o If you are missing 1 or 2 extra stitches, 2 HDC in a ST between the stems until you have the right number of STs between each stem (this will stop the stems from bending)

It may be helpful to use stitch markers to mark the stems that will contain branches/brambles.

Take your second contrasting colour (CC2) and follow the instructions on how to make your snow drops with bobble stitches. You can choose to place them wherever you desire on the blanket.

To secure your bluebird to the blanket (and to make it look pretty) use back-stitch with your CC1 yarn. I have chosen to outline a wing, the tail feathers, create an eye, and accent the beak.
