Holland and Sherry began with wool. From our earliest days

as a purveyor of suiting material to the menswear industry

of London’s Savile Row, our name has been synonymous with

the finest in woolen cloth. This legacy expanded and evolved

when our brand moved to Peebles, Scotland over a century

ago. The focus on quality was sharpened and the collection

refined. Today our offerings of interiors fabrics include more

than 1200 products made from the world’s highest-quality

merino wool. The drape, the hand, the sheen, and the sheer

richness of our wools are unparalleled. From classic Scottish

tweeds to sumptuous wool solids produced at proprietary

mills, the collection has evolved to compliment all styles of

design and application. Particularly noteworthy are our

mélange wools, in which as many as eight fiber colors are

individually dyed and spun together to create fabric with a

depth of color unlike anything of its kind.

Within these pages, you will find a guide

to our complete wool product line.

WOOL FABRIC GLOSSARY

Bouclé the yarn and fabric characterized by a soft looping effect, named after the French word for curl

Carding a process in wool spinning that disentangles and opens the fiber and removes vegetable matter; this proceeds yarn spinning and twistingCashmere the fiber derived from the cashmere goat, which is found principally on the cold and dry highlands of Central Asia. The low bulk, high loft fibers make cashmere cloths luxurious with a soft and seductive handle and beautiful drape.

Chenille a yarn or fabric with a soft, fuzzy, surface effect, whose name is derived from the French word for caterpillar

Combing a process in yarn spinning that removes short fibers and straightens and orients the fiber in a parallel direction; this process is part of the worsted spinning system

Crimp the natural wavy character of the wool fiber

Dobby a weaving system or loom with shafts or harnesses to raise and lower the warp yarns, which interlace with the weft yarns to create woven fabric; fabrics created on the dobby loom include plain cloth, stripes, plaids and textures

Dye to add color to fiber, yarn or fabric, in a process requiring dye powders, water, heat and agitation

Ewe an adult female sheep

Felt the process of interlocking and condensing wool fibers together to create a fabric; felting can be used to create a non-woven or woven fabric; Holland & Sherry’s wool felt cloth is a woven felt

Filament a continuous fiber; filament fibers can be natural such as silk, or made from a variety of synthetic or man-made materials such as polyester, nylon, rayon, etc

Finishing a range of processes designed to enhance the handle, appearance and performance of fabrics by means of chemical and/or mechanical treatments. Finishing is an integral step in the manufacture of all woven products; how well it is done dramatically impacts upon the handle, appearance and wear performance of the fabric. In woven fabrics, finishing aims to relax and stabilize strains within the fabric that are introduced during spinning and weaving and remove any residual dirt, lubricants and waxes through washing

Flannel a woven fabric that is characterized by a soft appearance and handle; the milled finish creates a napped surface that gives a flannel its unique characteristics; flannel cloths are used for suiting, trousers, women’s wear, jackets, coatings and interior fabrics

Fleece sheep’s wool in the grease state

Handle the touch or feel of a wool fabric

Herringbone a combination of twill weaves in which the direction of the twill is reversed to produce stripes resembling the skeleton of a herring fish; it has a distinctive V-shaped weaving pattern and is usually woven in wool. It is one of the most popular cloths used for suits and outerwear; tweed cloth is often woven with a herringbone pattern

9

Page 11: Wool Sourcebook

Hopsack a variation of plain weave in which two or more threads are woven together as one in the warp or weft, or both; the simplest and most common of these is 2/2 hopsack, with two warp yarns and two weft yarns interlacing creating a basketweave

Jacquard woven fabrics that are more intricate in design than those woven on a dobby loom; in the jacquard loom each warp yarn is controlled by an individual hook and able to create more complex patterns that cannot be woven with a robby loom

Lamb’s Wool wool from the first shearing of a sheep

Lamb a young sheep in its first year

Lanolin the natural grease or oil secreted from a sheep’s skin

Loom a machine for weaving cloth

Mélange a mixture of several different fiber colors used to create a yarn; the fiber colors blend together and create a unique, multi-dimensional yarn color; mélange can also be referred to as a heather effect

Micron the measurement of the diameter of a wool fiber; the lower the micron number the finer the fiber

Merino the breed of sheep that produces the finest quality of wool fleece; the merino fiber is characterized by a whiter color, greater softness, and a long luminous fiber length than is seen in ordinary wool; the finest Merino sheep are bred in Australia, New Zealand, and Patagonia

Milling a finishing process to shrink wool fabric and interlock the fiber, resulting in a fabric with a napped surface that has a soft appearance and handle

Nap a soft effect that is created by raising the fibers on the face of a fabric to the surface

Plain weave the most basic weave structure, where the warp and weft are aligned so they form a simple criss-cross pattern; it is the tightest of all woven structures, creating a strong and hardwearing fabric used for fashion and furnishing fabrics

Raw wool wool in its natural state with the grease before the fiber is processed

Sateen a weave structure that is characterized by a smooth appearance created from long yarn floats on the surface of the fabric; Holland & Sherry’s patterns Andes, Glace and Hielo are all warp faced sateen cloths.

Scouring washing the natural grease from the wool fiber; scouring is the initial stage of the finishing process for wool fabric

Shearing the removing of a sheep’s fleece with clippers

Sheer semi-transparent cloth, mainly used for drapery

Spinning the process by which fiber is turned into yarn; during spinning, the fibers are drawn out and twisted together, which holds the fibers together and makes the yarns strong, smooth and fine

Staple the length of a natural plant or animal fiber

Tartan a woven fabric, usually in wool, characterized by distinctive horizontal and vertical bands of color that blend together in a twill weave; this is also referred to as a plaid

10

Page 12: Wool Sourcebook

Top-dye the process of adding color to wool top

Tweed a woven pattern in which twill, herringbone and chevron weaves are combined with subtle heathered colorations; Scottish sporting tweeds used for hunting garments and Irish Donegals are popular tweed cloths

Twill a weave structure that is characterized by warp yarns and weft yarns interlacing in a diagonal direction

Virgin wool wool fiber that is processed for the first time

Warp the vertical yarn that runs the length of the loom and is held in tension; weft yarns are inserted horizontally across the warp and interlace with the warp yarns

Weave the interlacing of warp and weft yarns

Weft the yarn running in the horizontal direction in a woven fabric

Worsted a wool yarn spinning system for processing fine quality, long staple wool fiber. In this system, short fibers are combed out while the longer fibers are straightened and oriented in a parallel direction; worsted yarns and fabrics are characterized by a refined, smooth surface and are used for suiting, trousers, dresses, formal wear and interior fabrics

Wool top a continuous strand of wool fiber that is scoured and partially oriented but not fully combed or spun; wool top is the beginning stage of wool yarn processing

Woolen yarn and fabric produced on the woolen system; the yarn is made from shorter fiber lengths and can be coarse or fine; the fibers are carded but not combed so they run in different directions and give a woolen yarn or fabric a soft, fuzzy appearance; woolen fabrics are used for jacketing, coating and interior fabrics

Wool the fiber from the fleece of a sheep that is shorn once a year; wool fiber is characterized by a curly structure that can be fine or coarse and has micro scales on the surface that give the fiber an interlocking property. Wool has excellent insulating properties, which provide warmth in cold weather and help to regulate the air temperature of interiors. Strong and durable, it readily accepts dye colors on its natural cream tone, and is also naturally fire resistant. Wool is a sustainable, biodegradable, 100% natural material

Yarn a continuous strand that is created by spinning fiber; yarn is interlaced to create woven and knit fabrics

The Holland & Sherry mill in Tome, Chile is the core symbol of our devotion to fully

vertical textile production for interiors. From dyeing the wool fiber and spinning the

yarns to weaving and finishing, all facets of the manufacturing process are fulfilled

within these walls. With the ability to produce and ship over one million meters of wool

and linen per year, the Holland & Sherry mill at Crossville is the most important asset to

our company.

The production of fine fabrics starts with raw material, which is carefully sourced in

New Zealand, Australia, and Patagonia. The natural materials are sorted, dyed, and then

spun into various yarns including our celebrated melange wool yarn. The fabrics are

then woven, mended, and finished with the same care our company has been known for

since 1836. The state of the art machinery and artisan techniques insure continuity in

producing the finest worsted wool qualities in the world. The simple fact that our mill

is fully vertical gives Holland & Sherry in-house quality control as well as unparalleled

flexibility in design.

Holland & Sherry believes in environmental responsibility. Our mill generates its

own energy for production and heating through renewable clean burn resources such as

wood pellets and agricultural by-products like walnuts and hazel nut shells. The water

used in all processes is strictly regulated so it can be returned to a neutral ph and used as

drinking water. All fiber and yarn waste is over-dyed and reused or donated to

like-minded industries for use as filling in furniture and bedding.

The Savile Row collection continues with three variations of traditional Scottish District checks; Glen Plaid, Prince of Wales and Houndstooth. Patterns traditionally used for sport jacketing have been updated and refined for the home interior. The Glen Plaid, also known as Glenurguhart originates from the Highland region of Scotland near Loch Ness. It is characterized by a small square Shepard check combined with a hair-line effect. The Glen Plaid, available in 8 colors, is doubled in size to create the bold Prince of Wales pattern, available in 4 colors, and the coordinate, Hound-stooth; 16 colors. The collection includes classic colorations such as black & white, navy and browns and is updated with modern combinations of orange & grey and bright blue with brown. These cloths are sturdy, heavy in weight and are perfect for upholstery, drapery and even contact use.• Patterns within the Savile Row Collection: Glen Plaid, Prince of Wales, and Westminster Houndstooth• Custom colors available – 130 yard minimum• Upholstery, drapery, wall, soft goods, accessories

All are woven from fine worsted wool in a heavier coating weight that makes them suitable for almost any application. Quaintrelle, the feminine Dandy, is a graceful, overscale herringbone that is available in 16 fashionable colors. Modern Gent is a stylish flannel hopsack that reflects the attitude of today’s urban gentleman in 18 sophisticated colors. And finally, the Dashing Stripe lives up to its name, with its bold chalk stripe featured in 10 modern colors.• Patterns within the Dandy II Collection: Quaintrelle, Modern Gent, Dashing Stripe• Custom colors combinations available – 130 yard minimum• Upholstery, drapery, soft goods and accessories
