5 simple steps to using a compass
www.9thHuddersfieldScouts.org.uk
Step one: work out where you are and where you want to go!
You know you are here
You want to get straight here
www.9thHuddersfieldScouts.org.uk
Step two: Line the edge of the compass up alongside your two points
The edge of the compass shows your route between the two points

Step three: Match the inner lines up with the Northings (north facing grid lines)
Twist this inner bit until the lines are parallel to ( in line with) the vertical grid lines

Step Four: Lift the compass off the map
Turn the compass and yourself until the blue arrow in the middle…
…Is parallel to (in line with) the North pointer (normally red)

Step Five: walk until you reach your destination
Walk in the direction the blue ‘travel’ arrow points
Make sure when you walk you keep the North pointer (needle) in line with the blue lines
Do not adjust the compass in any way, unless you want to change your destination
