fischer – one of the most innovative companies inthe world
With a total of over 2018 patents applied for (as at December 2004),
fischer is a real powerhouse of innovation. Based in Tumlingen, near
Freudenstadt in Swabia, South Germany, the company is split into four
divisions: fixings, automotive, fischertechnik and process consultancy.

“He who seeks innovation finds fischer” is our company motto. And
we work hard to live up to this demanding aspiration every day, with
high-quality products that are as simple as possible to use, while still
offering maximum safety and reliability. We also offer a wide range
of services that make it as easy as possible for you to use our pro-
ducts.
This “Fixing Guide” is a prime example of how we think about
service. It gives a rapid overview of our extensive product range, and
then clearly guides you to the safest and most reliable solution to
your fixing problem. Should you still have any questions, you can
contact our team of experts on the technical hotline on
+49 744 312 4946 at any time. You can find further information in
our virtual house on our homepage at www.fischer.de.
As you can see, we do more than simply manufacturing and selling
our products – our aim is to advise and help you as well. As the
market leader – and fischer is the original – we also want to give you
a reference point in an increasingly confusing product world. But our
main aim is quite simply this: whether you are fixing shelves or
awnings, to give just two examples, you should always feel secure –
permanently.

Find things quicklyinstead of long searches
One good reason for fischer fixings is the material we use.
Nylon is characterised by particularly high
impact resistance, abrasion resistance and
durability. This gives fischer fixings unique
quality and reliability: high holding force,
lower screw-in torque and high over-screw
torque, high temperature and chemical
resistance, good damping behaviour and
electrical insulation properties.
Are you standing in front of the fischer shelf and don’t know
which fixing to take?
Don’t panic: it’s easy to find the right answer.
1. The purpose:
You know what you need the fixing for. Pages 6 to 9 contain a table
with applications and matching solutions.
2. The building material:
Or perhaps you’re looking for a solution for a particular building
material – concrete, masonry, solid or board materials, etc. The
possible solutions are listed in the table on page 10.
3. The colour:
Whatever happens, our colour coding system in this leaflet will lead
to your fixing and detailed information about it. From page 12 on-
wards – and in every fischer shelf.
And just to make sure that nothing goes wrong, you’ll find an abund-
ance of information at the end of the leaflet on special applications, tips
and tricks, forces and loads.
We hope you enjoy using our fixings and wish you every success with
fischer.

For all building materials
The choice is yours.
There are many different building materials, and fixings. But none grip
as well as fischer fixings. fischer has the right solution for every pur-
pose: highly specialised if need be, or a universal fixing for every wall.
More information on the right fixing in different building materials can
be found on the Internet: Visit our “virtual house”. It’s under “Fasten-
ings” in the menu item “DIY” at www.fischer.de
Clay brick and porousbrick can be recognisedby its red drilling dust.
Gypsum fibreboard pro-duces a white fibrousdrilling dust, and plaster-board a fine white drill-ing dust that stick to thedrill bit.
Drilling in concrete pro-ducts a fine light grey towhite dust that can stilltrickle.
Drilling dust from air-crete is white, coarseand slightly greasy.
Lime-sand brick pro-duces white drilling dustwith a sandy feel to it.

Handy to know
How to use fixings properly.
1. Check the material where the fixing will be placed:
• The surface building material must be suitable for the
intended weight.
• The substrate can be recognised from its drilling dust,
see page 10.
2. Drill perpendicular to the surface:
• Drill evenly and never change the drill angle.
Rotary drilling
• Fast rotation
• Acts by scraping
Impact drilling
• Fast rotation and high impact rate
• Low energy per individual impact.
• Acts by shattering
Hammer drilling
• Slow rotation and low impact rate
• High energy per individual impact
• Acts by shattering
35
Han
dy
to k
now
3. Select the drilling method depending on the building
material:
• Rotary: no impact. For building materials such as gypsum plas-
terboard, chipboard or perforated brick, so that the hole doesn’t
become too large.
• Impact drilling: a large number of low-energy impacts for softer
solid building materials with dense structures such as clay
bricks.
• Hammer drilling: a small number of high-energy impacts for
harder solid building materials with dense structures such as
concrete.
4. Pay attention to drilling the correct hole size:
• As a rule: plug diameter = hole diameter.
• A tip from the professionals: If you drill the hole 1 mm smaller
than the plug diameter in soft building materials, this increases
load-bearing capacity and anti-rotation properties.
5. Most important when setting and installing fixings –
pay attention to the maximum load-bearing capacity:
• Follow the installation instructions on the packet.
• You will only achieve the maximum load-bearing capacity if you
use the maximum diameter screws.
• The screw tip must protrude from the tip of the fixing by at least
the screw diameter.
• In perforated and cavity materials, the expansion zone of the
fixing must be fully anchored in at least one stone fillet.
• A fixing can only support the maximum load if it is entirely
anchored in the substrate (not the plaster layer).

How forces act.
Forces are generally expressed using Newtons as the
unit.
As a rule of thumb: 10 N (Newtons) = 1 kg.
The load tables below show what loads the fixings can
take in various building materials. If you have any ques-
tions or comments, please contact us. We will be
pleased to help.

When something is mounted, various forces are acting on it.
Tensile force
Shear force
The diagonal force, resulting from the tensile and
the shear forces, is particularly significant with heavy wall-
mounted items such as cupboards.

Handy to know
General information:
The load limit for a fixing does not apply to products with hooks, due to possible bending of
the hook.
The maximum holding values stated for products with wood screws always refer to the
largest-diameter wood screw.
