names. Then talk with your partner about how they overcame

the difficulties they faced.

Walt Disney J.K. Rowling The Beatles Tom Cruise

① J.K. Rowling faced prejudice and poverty as a single parent,

but eventually became the author of a popular book series.

② Tom Cruise has a reading problem and has to study movie

scripts by listening to tapes, not by reading them.

③ The Beatles were rejected by a record company that thought

groups had no future in show business. The decision turned

out to be one of the biggest mistakes in music history.

④ Walt Disney was once very poor. He/She had to sleep on an

old sofa and eat cold beans out of a can for dinner. He/She

was fired for "lack of imagination" in his/her drawings.

B. Look at the time zone map and answer the questions. [

1. What time is it in London when it is 10 p.m. on November 18

in Seoul?

2. Why is there a time difference between the two cities?

1. It is 1 p.m. on November 18 in London.

2. The Earth is round and rotates at a steady rate of 360°C per

day, 15° per hour. So when the two countries are not located

in the same area of longitude, there is a time difference

between them.

Read the following paragraph and match the words in bold to

their meanings.

The Earth rotates 15° per hour. Therefore, if we know the local

times at two points on Earth, we can compare them and calculate

how far apart those places are in longitude. Nevertheless, it was

very difficult for sailors in the 17th century to keep the exact

time. The motion of the ships, changes in humidity, and

differences in temperature would prevent clocks from keeping

accurate time at sea.

a. _________: to stop something from happening

b. _________: to guess something using research and facts

c. _________: to examine two or more things in order to show

how they are similar to or different

d. _________: the distance to the east or west of a line passing

through a particular meridian

Reading Strategy in Context

Recognizing the Sequence of Events

Information in a text can be presented by listing events in the

order in which they happened. Sequence markers like "then,"

"after," "in 1773," and "six year later" are used to indicate the

sequence of events. Recognizing this can help you to understand

the text better.

Read the following paragraph and answer the questions.

In 1707, a group of British warships were returning home from

war. Due to bad weather and not being able to calculate the

accurate longitude, the ships struck some rocks. Four ships were

lost and many people died. Seven years later, the British

government offered the prize and established the Board of

Longitude. Shortly after, inventors searched for new ways for

measuring accurate longitude at sea.

1. Underline the sequence markers that tell you the sequence of

the story.

2. What did the British government do after the accident in 1707?

NOTE

‘then,' 'after,' 'in

1773,' 'six years later'

☐ In 1707, a group of British ships sank because they couldn't

calculate their exact longitude on the sea.

☐ The second trial was also a success, but the Board still

Think More

A. Imagine yourself as John Harrison and complete the following

speech from when you are finally recognized as the inventor of

the first marine chronometer. Share your answers with your

partner.

Good afternoon. Thank you very much for inviting me here

today. It is such an honor for me to be credited with inventing

the marine chronometer. When I was fourteen years old, I heard

that nearly 2,000 men died near the Isles of Scilly. I thought if

they had been able to calculate accurate longitude on the sea, the

tragedy would never have happened. It was the beginning of my

dream to invent the marine chronometer. From then on, I kept

trying no matter how hard it was. If you have goals and dreams,

then try hard and never give up. Eventually, your dreams will

come true.

B. Read the following questions and write your ideas, referring to

the example. Then share them with your partner.

If you had an idea that could solve one of the biggest problems

of your time, would you give up most of your life to develop and

prove that idea? Would you still do it even if it meant you would

struggle and have difficulties all of your life?

Example

If I could solve one of the biggest problems of my time, I would

be willing to spend my whole life to achieve it. I want to help

people no matter how much time or effort will be needed.

If I had an opportunity to think of solutions to one of the

biggest problems of my time, I would strive to do so. Of course,

it would not be easy to devote my whole life to developing an

invention, and there would be a good chance of failing as well.

However, if I never gave up and worked hard on it, I could

probably accomplish my goal.

Great Inventors that Changed Our Way of Life

Take a moment to think about what you do each day. You

probably use many machines and inventions that you don't even

think about. Here are some of the inventors and their inventions

that help make your life easier.

Willis Carrier (1876~1950)

The Man of Modern Air Conditioning

Willis Carrier is the father of modern refrigeration and air

conditioning. While other people tried to create cooling systems,

none were very successful. But he managed to solve the problem,

inventing a mechanical humidity controller that passed air through

a filter, then over coils containing a coolant. Without his

invention, we would be a lot less comfortable during the hot days

of summer.

Nicolas Appert (1749~1841)

A Pioneer of the Process of Food Canning

In the 1970s, canning was discovered as a way to preserve food

from spoiling. Nicolas Appert, a French inventor, realized that

using heat to seal food inside glass jars and containers could

prevent the food from going bad. The French Navy tested Appert's

ideas in the early 1800s as a way of preserving many kinds of

foods and drinks. It was a huge success!

Karlheinz Brandenburg (1954-)

The Inventor of MP3 Files

Karlheinz Brandenburg developed the MPEG Audio Layer 3

format, known as an MP3 file. It can make music files smaller

with no loss of sound quality. Led by Brandenburg, the

Fraunhofer Institute Research Center began studying audio coding

in 1987. Today, Brandenburg's MP3 files are popular for music

files both on computers and MP3 players.

________90), the Board of Longitude did not ________91) give him the prize money. They still

Harrison finally received the prize money by Act of Parliament in June 1773. This meant John

When [traveling/traveled]1) by sea, knowing your exact location can mean the difference between

life and death. Today's sailors rely on satellite technology to find out their location, but sailors in

the past couldn't do this. So they were always in danger when at sea. This all changed in the 18th

century, however, thanks to the hard work and persistence of an English clockmaker.

The Longitude Problem

Before that time, sailors depended on instruments that calculated the position of the sun or stars

to tell them their latitude. These instruments told them how far they were from the equator.

Determining their longitude [was/were]2) [very/even]3) more difficult. Since the Earth rotates at a

steady rate of 360° per day or 15° per hour, [all/every]4) 15° of longitude a ship traveled, the local

time changed by one hour. That is to say, there is a direct relationship between time and longitude.

In order to calculate longitude, sailors needed to determine the time at sea and [depend/depended]5)

on the positions of stars and planets for help. Doing this, however, [was/were]6) [either/neither]7)

In 1707, the difficulty [by/in]8) calculating longitude led to a terrible tragedy. A group of British

The Board of Longitude, however, was not impressed by his idea. [Basing/Based]24) on the opinions

of leading scientists, they believed that clocks couldn't accurately tell time on the open sea. This

reasoning [based/was based]25) on the fact [which/that]26) clocks of that time had pendulums that

swung back and forth inside them. But on rough seas, with the ship [moving/moved]27) violently in

all directions, the pendulum would not swing steadily. Therefore, clocks would not be able to keep

[sensible/sensitive]28) to temperature changes. For these reasons, the Board of Longitude actually

expected the solution [to relate/to be related]29) to the observations of stars rather than to clocks.

However, Harrison was sure he could make a clock that remained [accurate/accurately]30) on long

sea voyages. He suggested [using/to use]31) springs instead of pendulums, and [making/made]32) the

he completed his project, [which/where]34) he named H1.

and tested. Harrison did not accept the suggestion right away. However, he eventually released the

Nevertheless, the Board of Longitude did not immediately give him the prize money. They still
