Why the Tools are Necessary• Technology tools available to educators provide unique ways
to engage students in the learning process. Engaged learners are less bored, more likely to achieve the learning goals set out for them, and more likely to stay in school.
• Future Ready Curriculum/21st Century Skills should be taught in a 21st Century context. That means learners should be focusing on how to select and use the appropriate technology tools for real-world problem solving, communication, and collaboration.
• Business leaders recognize the clear economic need to provide
student access to the technology tools enhancing productivity and innovation in the workplace so that students will be employable when they leave school.
George W. Bush "If we don’t fix [the education system], the jobs will move to where the best-educated workforce is in other countries," Cisco Systems president John Chambers said after the Austin meeting. "It won’t be jobs in California versus North Caro-lina or Boston. It will be jobs in the U.S. versus jobs in India, or jobs in Jordan, or jobs in the U.K. And we believe we’ve got about a decade to fix this." (September 2001)
"Education is key to economic growth," Gates said. "Education is [a top priority], because as the chairman of Microsoft, I'm looking to hire the most talented people worldwide." (From Microsoft DreamSpark release to high schoolers announcement March 2009)
• One Laptop Per Child Initiative- If children in some of the poorest regions of the world are being provided laptops to connect with other cultures around the globe, we should not deny our own children that opportunity--especially if it will help them be more competitive internationally.
