Who am I?Platypuses are 20 incheslong including the tail. Theirweight is about 3 poundswhen they are adults. Theyare mammals that lay eggs.When on land they moveawkward, but the webbingon their feet retracts , toexpose individual nails andallows the creatures to run. Ittakes ten days to hatch in aburrow.

The Early Years Females nurse their youngfor three up four monthsuntil they can swim on theirown. The young lick the furaround any aboriginalsopenings of the glandsbecause the female lacks.When born born they are thesize of a lima bean and theyare very helpless.

Habitat Sweet HabitatThe platypuses habitatis near a river or streamto make a burrow to layeggs of their young.They live in a smallburrow when it is notbreeding season. Inbreeding season theybuild a larger burrow sothey have room for theiryoung.

What’s on the Menu?The platypus eatsinvertebrates ascaddis, mayfly, anddragonfly larvae,freshwater shrimp,crayfish andearthworms.
