6. Plagiarism & Citing Sources
Types of Plagiarism
Intentional – Copying an author’s words without giving them credit
Accidental – Not giving credit to an author due to forgetting citations or not citing correctly
Either type is a serious offense, and can result in major consequences.
Avoiding Plagiarism
Cite sources when quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing the words of another
Citations should appear in the text of your paper and in a reference list at the end of your paper
Using ParaphrasingDon’t quote if you can paraphrase more succinctly,
but always remember to cite the source.
Paraphrase:
The Big Apple Circus is made up of performers from across the world(Armstrong, 2008).
Reference List:Armstrong, L. (2008, December 18). The Big Apple Circus is one classy circus. New York Amsterdam News, 99(52), 38. Retrieved from http://www.amsterdamnews.com
Example: “Now in its 31st year, the Big Apple Circus, which is playing at Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center, is a sweet treat-for the family. The show has an international cast from Germany, Russia, Belgium, Italy, England, Bulgaria, France and Colombia and several members from the U.S.”
Citation StylesThere are many citation styles with slight
differences in formatting. You will need to look at your assignment description or ask your professor which citation style you need to use.
