Miranda do Corvo is a village and a municipality from Coimbra district. It has a beautiful Church on top of a hill

overlooking the area. A tower and a cistern are

what remains of an ancient castle. A military structure, it

played a particularly important role in the defence line of

Mondego River and Coimbra between the XI and XII

centuries.

By 1064, D. Sesnando starts a series of important reforms in castles that

surround and protect the city of Coimbra, including the one in

Miranda do Corvo. This tower - current bell tower of the church - would be part of the

wall of the medieval fortification, as well as the cistern, located at the

top of the hill.

Since June 2011 that archaeological work has been carried out and this has allowed the

identification of foundation bases for a structure near the cistern.

Interestingly, a set of over 30 graves

excavated in the rock reveals that this area was used as a burial

ground over 900 years ago.
