What is Marketing?

Marketing is the process by media audiences

are made aware of media products especially

new products that have a specific release

date and exhibition platforms from where

those products can be purchased.

The process by which television audiencesare made aware of the imminent broadcast ofnew programmes.

The process by which television audiencesare made aware of channel schedules for newseasons.

The process by which audiences arereminded of channel identities (branding,ethos, remit, target audience etc).

Television Marketing: Focus

Television production companies make television programmes.

Television production companies sell programmes to television channels.

Television channels can commission production companies to make a specific type of programme for them e.g. BBC commissioned Red Productions to make Happy Valley.

It is the television channel that markets their

television programmes.

Television production companies showcase

their programmes on their web site. This

establishes and builds their reputation with TV

channels.

Television channels produce and broadcast

promos which tease audiences with ‘mini

trailers’ from upcoming programmes (in a

compilation promo each programme may only

be showcased for a few seconds).

Unlike film trailers, these promos tend to be

shown only weeks in advance of the new

season.

Channels will also invest in broadcasting

promos for individual programmes. Those

promos tend to appear at the same time as

the programme they are promoting –

especially keeping the watershed in mind.
